We're sponsored again! This time is an indepenent initiative from a collective that will be called Friends of Tribal Wars. The prizes will be now as follows:

  • 3 tix to the winner of the event, i.e. the player who ended undefeated in the Swiss portion, then defeated all the other undefeated players during the single-elimination playoff.
  • 1 tix to the first runner-up of the single-elimination playoff, if it took place. Otherwise, this tix will be stored and used for one-of special prizes during the season.
  • 1 tix to the Dark Horse Prize winner. No more than one Dark Horse Prize can be awarded each event, so there will be tie-breakers applied based on the three qualifying elements of the Dark Horse Prize (size, popularity, and success). During special events like Halloween Special and the Spring Festival, the Dark Horse Prize is replaced with dedicated prizes.

Speaking of which, remember tomorrow is indeed the Spring Festival, which is the polar opposite of Halloween Special: green-centered rather than black-centered. Rules and allowed tribes are here. Raccoon and the nature-oriented form of Warlock (i.e. nonblack nonblue) have been added.

  • Event Number: Week 638 BE
  • Date: April 22
  • Attendance:
  • Rounds: 3
  • Subformat: SilverBlack
  • Winner: AJ_Impy with Construct
  • 1-loss: Yokai_ with Elf, -DiamondDust- with Zombie
  • Tribes: Construct, Elf, Rogue, Soldier, Zombie (x2)
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

The second venture into the parallel world where rare and mythic cards don't exist, after the original experiment from two years ago, saw the undefeated run of AJ_Impy with a Temur Construct deck based on Gates. Is this one of the main contenders for meta dominator?

Something that had not been attempted the first time around in the format is an adaptation of classic Elves. Now Yokai_ did it, and this is what looks like. Which is: it looks like something that could also easily steamroll the competition.

Here's the prices of all the featured decks (MTGO Traders prices as of April 28, 2023):

  • AJ_Impy's Constructs: $13.30
  • Yokai_'s Elves: $8.36

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Up-and-Coming Virtual Plaque: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get bragging rights.

The New Kids on the Block Imaginary Commemorative Plate: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get everyone's respect. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. Tribes currently eligible: none.

The Hamtastic Trophy: The Biodiversity distinction dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg is awarded to each player who registers the most different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) during the year.

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated in a specific format, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck in that format again for 3 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck three times before coming back to the undefeated one). In some cases, specific combo or archetype-defining cards will also be locked out. A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

We're on Discord! Join us from here, chat about tribal things with other tribal players and arrange tribal games on MTGO all week long! (Or your can just keep using our Google Sheets bulletin board).
