LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: Week 666 BE
  • Date: November 4
  • Attendance: 5
  • Rounds: 3
  • Subformat: Demonic
  • Winner: Nagarjuna with Demon
  • Tribes: Demon (x4), Devil
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

The Event Number of the Beast! Except last week's special event didn't actually accept Beasts, per se; it only accepted Demons and Devils. And with no banned cards, to boot! The former subtype was the overwhelmingly favorite choice of participants, and ended up giving Nagarjuna the first victory since his return. His peculiar list plays the field by explicitly hating on the Demons' go-to strategy: reanimator. As well as on black creatures in general. And when was the last time you saw the original Urborg in play?

While Nagarjuna fought the entire field with his renegade Demons, the lone Devil list ran by Takeoutree should be featured, as a consolation prize for the little evils. Fun fact: MTG took the opposite approach of D&D regarding the two diabolical monikers, with Demon indicating the larger ones while Devil is reserved for the smaller ones; down in the Forgotten Realms, the opposite is true, as the crossover sets demonstrated. The MTG way sounds more accurate to language, though. The fallen Lucifer might be the quintessential Devil, but in English you also say "poor devil", not "poor demon".

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Up-and-Coming Virtual Plaque: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get bragging rights.

The New Kids on the Block Imaginary Commemorative Plate: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get everyone's respect. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. Tribes currently eligible: none.

The Hamtastic Trophy: The Biodiversity distinction dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg is awarded to each player who registers the most different tribes (except Human, Elf, and Goblin) during the year. But there are also Magic Online Player Rewards Packs to be won! For every 10 different tribes registered in a Tribal Apocalypse event during the same year, the player will get 10 Player Rewards Packs. All Swiss rounds of the event must be played, though, no early drop allowed if you want the prize.

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated in a specific format, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck in that format again for 3 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck three times before coming back to the undefeated one). In some cases, specific combo or archetype-defining cards will also be locked out. A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.
