Drafting With a Hick - Innistrad Drafts 2&3

Hey everyone, I hope you have had a glorious week thus far.  I haven't, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the ABSOLUTE FAILINGS of my hometown teams to begin this article.

Way back I mentioned in one of the DWH articles about how overcome with joy I was when my Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Championship.  It was a glorious run capped off by an amazing cast of misfits and guys who did not fit the mold.  These are the reasons we watch sports (if you do, sorry no idea about my demographic here), and some of the things I revel in every year.  For obvious reasons, I am a big fan of the Texas Rangers (baseball) and the Dallas Cowboys (Football - almost a religion where I was raised).  I apologize for this aside, but I wanted to explain the chain of events that left me SO ANGRY & DEJECTED this weekend.

Thursday Night - Game 6 - World Series - Texas Rangers vs. St. Lous Cardinals

We are ahead in the Ninth Inning, two strikes on the final batter, there are two outs.  What do we do, on the precipice of our VERY FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP?  We give up a 2-run double, tying the game and sending it to extras.  In the 10th inning, our slugger hits a 2 run homer - and the EXACT SAME scenario plays out, they are down to their last out and strike and score 2 runs on ANOTHER base hit.  Then I could hear the music playing, and I knew it was over.  In the 11th inning they hit a walk-off homer.

We summarily got blown out in Game 7.  No championship.

This was not fun at all.....

Sunday Night - Primetime game - Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

I am pumped UP!  Drinking (water) all day, eating the good stuffz, watched all the earlier games.  The Cowboys show up to play their most hated rival...  Except they didn't really show up.  They score a garbage touchdown in the last few minutes but get BLOWN THE HECK OUT - 34 - 7.  This is how my weekend went, started with a poo and ended with a mega stinker.  Ah the life of a sports fan....

This was not fun at all.....either

(I hope this was a different sort of prelude than my hollow explanation of how my weekend was - this is ACTUALLY how my weekend went down.  Luckily I have 2 awesome kids and Halloween more than made up for my gloomy mood~!)

SO with that out of the way, let's look at my adventures in the Innistrad queues.  What follows are my 2nd and 3rd Innistrad drafts I have attempted.. be warned I am still a huge novice.

RareDraft Innistrad Draft #2:

Round One:

Round Two:

Round Three:

RareDraft Innistrad Draft #3:

Round One:

Round Two:

Round Three:

What a sub-par session.  No $ and no real success...  2-1 and 1-2 is pretty awful, but these are the ways a novice player learns a new set.  With no experience in paper I will try to move forward and learn from failures like these.  I hope to report on drafts #4 & #5 next week.

As always, thanks for coming through guys.  Leave pick advice, suggestion or comments below the article, I will do my best to respond in a timely manner.  I will talk to you soon, make your day great!

I'll try to go more in-depth by TwoHands at Fri, 11/04/2011 - 17:23

I'll try to go more in-depth later, but there's one glaring thing here: you criminally underrate Silent Departure. In this format, it's absolutely unreal. In your decks, it would have been amazing.

Also, my inclination is that Geistflame is better early than Into the Maw - like, I'd rather have the first Geistflame than the first Maw, but I can see that changing later.

Thanks for the comments TwoHands. I think I have been overlooking Silent Departure, and I will actively keep an eye out for it in the coming drafts... I'm about to do #4 as I type this response :D

I think I agree after playing both that Geistflame is typically better... Which seems odd looking at them side by side...

Thanks again for stopping in dude!

Sorry for this crap sandwich, but I have to.

Thanks for the quality articles and podcasts.

For the love of MTGO, please stop constantly moving the mouse back and forth between your opponent’s permanents (especially lands). It must be a nervous or boredom tick or something. It makes watching what are otherwise great videos a little annoying. I am not even sure you realize you are doing this. You do it in your classic tourney game videos too.

Again, I enjoy your work.

Does this bother anyone else?

Its nice and all, but speak something during the draft videos, really u make 5-6 picks and then say nah this card is bad and then u are silent. What's the purpose of video if it's animated version of raredraft ?

I feel your pain when it comes to the Rangers. I lived in Boston until 2010 so I witnessed many a Red Sox collapse (1978, 1986, 2003) before they finally won the big prize in 2004 and 2007. When the Rangers do finally win, their victory will taste that much better.

And yes, I stopped watching your videos because of the dreaded mouse hovering between your opponents lands. I still read your articles to see how you do, so maybe some day I can come back to watching your videos as well.

I feel like I need an intervention. Thank you guys for letting me know just how much the mouse thing annoys you.

I will find a way to fix it... no idea why it is so ingrained in my play now :(

I'm gonna post the videos from this past weekend, but next week look out for super-focused Zach trying to avoid the nervous tick!
