Heirloom Articles One, Two and Three (this is the fourth) The Legal Card List (over 7300 unique cards) The Official PRE announcement thread PRE 4 match videos     Jace's reaction to stumbling into the Heirloom article

Hey everyone,

    This article is mostly dedicated to our fourth player run event which we managed to get fourteen players for. So I'm pretty happy about the way the format is growing and it's just getting more and more interesting as we go along. There is a meta to be sure, but I really don't think any particular deck or player could claim to be dominating this format yet. It's still wide open to innovation and archetype.

    There are a few people I'd like to mention that have contributed to the cause since my last writing. Varchild-Cold-Fury helped me out a lot with some technical difficulties I was having, We got another solid donation from Thuh-Nagarjuna of 1 tix and 2 foils so thanks again for that, and we got a very much appreciated donation from ChrisMH77 of a ton of foils including 1 Curse of Wizardry, 1 promo Khabal Ghoul, 4 Mistvein Borderpost, 3 Parasitic Strix, 4 Prismatic Lens, 3 Sedraxis Alchemist, 3 Soul Manipulation, 4 Tidehollow Strix, 3 Whiplash Trap, and 1 Zektar Shrine Expedition. Thanks again for that Chris. Now on with the event coverage.

1st: Mr Slippery 39 (The-Slippery-B.I.G.)

*Slippery*

I am The-Slippery-B.I.G.

You all know me

You won't see me comin

You won't know what deck I'm runnin

*Slippery*

Because I innovate, translate, formulate

All new tech for each new battle

To me youre all fresh meat, cattle

To my slaughter, fodder, water

for me to slip thorough and in you do

*Slippery*

Profit: 6 tix, one pack of M11  (donated by Hoffe-the-Fin), a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     The-Slippery-B.I.G innovated another new deck to win his 2nd Heirloom PRE (HPRE2 and HPRE4). His deck was a blue red lando menace taking advantage of Wildfire, Magnivore and a host of land destruction spells and sorcery card draw. Good show Mr Slippery 39.

"I went for Land Destruction for this week, Wildfire is just too powerful of a card to ignore."

2nd: HoffeFin (Hoffe-the-Fin)

Profit: 4 tix and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman). Hoffe-the-Fin donated his choice of foil back to the Heirloom prize pool for future events. Thanks again for that and donating your 2nd m11 pack.

     Hoffe-the-Fin Also took opportunity of the quality red cards legal in Heirloom with a red deck wins syle deck. He tried his luck again with a similar list from last week (I believe last week's list was wrong, that list was from this event, but he ran a similar deck both events, I get confused sometimes lol) Notably he succeeded with Ryusei, the Falling Star, Incendiary Command and a barrage of quality burn. Awesome finish.

3rd: OMC11

Profit: 2 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     OMC11 went to work with another variation on MBC as has ever proven to be a strong option. His deck ran Grinning Demon, Diabolic Servitude, and classic MBC cards like Tendrils of Corruption and Corrupt. No result one could sneeze at here.

"It ran really nicely overall."

4rth: Silvos der Benny

Profit: 2 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Silvos der Benny brought a deck that demonstrates his great deckbuilding skills. Not only was it creative but clearly it was effective, landing him in the top four for an extra tix over the participation award I've been known to give out of one tix. His was a green/black deck that investigates the combo between Eon Hub and upkeep effects like fading and upkeep triggered abilities. Some cards of note were Waning wurm, Rust Elemental, Paralyze, Ravaging Riftwurm, Greater Good and Soul's Majesty as well as the pure evil of Ritual of Subdual.

"...but this one here, ... heirloom, is PERFECT for players like me"

5th:badmalloc

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

badmalloc came in swinging with a green blue list of good stuff like Shorecrasher Mimic, Lorescale Coatl, and Favor of the Overbeing. It certainly didn't perform poorly.

6th: varcoldf (Varchild-Cold-Fury)

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Varchild-Cold-Fury brought a tweak on his infamous Mist of Stagnation deck. This time blue black with Bojuka Bog and Leyline of the Void to ensure complete grave desolation. Most of his losses were due to time. No doubt this deck is good. The only thing holding it back is the ability to click through the multitude of triggers it produces fast enough to beat the clock.

7th: Nagarjuna (Thuh-Nagarjuna)

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Thuh-Nagarjuna Set up camp for this event in the shadow of giant beasts of red/green ramp and efficiency. The intimidating list had Rumbling Slum, Lightning Bolt, Kalonian Behemoth and Mold-Shambler among other monsters and mana ramp.

"Amazing event!!!! 4 Rounds with how many players??? I don`t know, but its growing FAST!!!! I have seen a lot of creative and competitive decks! Thanks for that!"

8th: TimeQuake

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     TimeQuake got a delighted laugh out of me when I realized the nature of his "rogue" deck, and by "rogue" I mean rogue. As in his deck was a straight-up tribal rogue deck. He took this tribe to conduct his task with Oona's blackguard, Frogtosser Banneret, Nightshade Stinger, Prickly Boggart, and Inkfathom Infiltrator for a blistering necrotizing early game with evasion to go the distance.

9th: mrjebus27 (Don't-Mess-With-the-Jebus)

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Don't-Mess-With-the-Jebus tried his luck with his variation on the established Naya Astral Slide Lightning Rift deck that he won the last event with. The lack of pure beatdown decks was probably much responsible for his not placing higher.

10th: Phoenicika

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Phoenicika swarmed the tournament with an innovative build that capitalized on some of the best token cards legal in Heirloom. Included cards were Hour of Reckoning, Battle Screech, Glare of Subdual and Twilight Drover. I really liked the concept of this one and believe it has some great potential.

"This deck was good against aggro, but it turned out that its draws were  too temperamental. First round I lost to combo, second round I  mulliganed to four game one and lost in a top deck battle game two, and I  finally won round three when my opponent got flooded then screwed."

11th: Kage72

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     A newcomer with an axe to grind Kage72 was going to go for victory and wasn't going to be happy with anything less. He ran afoul of some of the more frustrating opponents early in the tournament such as The-Slippery-B.I.G.'s mana depriving blue/red monstrosity and Varchild-Cold-Fury's mana locking Blue/black Mist of Stagnation horror. Kage wouldn't leave the tournament without at least one victim however or without putting his tech on display. He played a blue/green trollshroud/aura deck that sought to win via voltron volition. Some components of his frankenstein's constructs were Slippery Bogle, Blanchwood Armor, Drove of Elves, and Molting Skin. This theme has a future I do not doubt.

"got that U control freak, cant do anything as soon as he plays 3 mana enchant"

"every cya, just need full sideboard of cheap art/enchant kills"

12th: Amar (Amar)

Profit: 1 tix, a foil of his choice and a foil promo land of his choice (donated by Our-Lord-Erman).

     Amar came packing with Relentless Rats. I wondered if he had cracked Heirloom and if Relentless Rats's time had come. It was not to be unfortunately. Perhaps with a different tweak or two or a little less bad luck. The rats always get a smile out of me in any case.

"Rats!  A fun deck, though the mana curve is more of a vertical line at the 3 mark. I debated playing Infest main, and every match I brought it in, but there were plenty where it wouldn't be good so I don't know.  0-4 deck, don't copy it.  But rats are fun."

13th: zander12

Profit: Well, as much as we appreciate his interest in the format a round one drop gets you a big goose egg in prizes.

     With a drop after round one I was not able to see what zander had brought to our gathering. He mentioned a forgotten appointment that caused him to leave early. Hopefully he was able to attend to his issue and we will see him again soon.

14th*: Xaoslegend (Xaos-Dissociative-Personality-Legend) (Disqualified for taking 2 free byes. What a cheater)

Profit: A fine day with friends and fun.

     I played the classic tried and true mer-jerks. The list is identical to the list I've published before under the name "Silvergill Sovereign". I wanted to finish my games quickly and bring something to the event to keep the players honest and this deck certainly fit the bill for that.

     Keep the work of brew meistering kindled my friends. It's such a pleasure to witness the result of so much genius and love of the game at these events.

     I know that there were those that allowed frustration to get the better of them at this event and I can only imagine this made some periods of participation less fun than it could have been for them and others. I can say that it was a small minority of the experience of the event and that it was still far below what I see at every wizard's sponsored event. I will also divulge that I have been that person myself that lets emotion overcome his true goal of playing the game: Excellence and enjoyment. I have been this person many many times and I do not look on myself favorably for that. However, I also allow for self reflection, to forgive myself, and to give to myself the gift of another chance at magic. Heirloom has been my personal MTG salvation from my Mr. Hyde. I love what this format has done for my mtg play experience and can honestly say that I believe most of my prior darkness has been devoured by the glimmer reflected off the heirlooms carried by all the players that play this format and at these events. (that and a lot of work on my personal issues =P)

Here at the end I've thrown up some videos of matches from the event, they don't have any audio or anything so my suggestion is to put on your favorite music to watch them. Have a good one guys and I'll get fast to work writing the fifth and then after this weekend's (10/9/10) event the sixth. I know the heirloom room isn't getting much use other than for the events but I would like to encourage people to join it that play heirloom when they're online even if just to chat. (join the heirloom chat channel by typing /join heirloom in any chat box on MTGO) While having your buddy list as a resource for Heirloom is your best friend it's good to be in the Heirloom room as much as possible just to get it rolling along as a resource for anyone who wants to check the format out.

I look forward to seeing you all this Saturday for that event, plenty of tix and foils still to be given out just for showing up to play the free event.

Thuh-Nagarjuna!,

Tx for the positive words, always appreciated.

I look forward to seeing what the brew is this time, slowly but surely I think your dedication to the format is giving you the advantages needed to succeed in the events more and more. I expect you to pull off an event win before too long.(not that that's the only thing worth playing the events for. Personally I love seeing the fun decks and people that just enjoy the innovation and johnnyness of the format as well and in the future I doubt the only approach I'll take to the events I play in to be one of the spike)

The next article will cover the 5th PRE and the next event will be PRE6 so there is a little bit of a delay between these and real time events.

I assume that anyone actually going to the events checks the mothership official announcement thread for the very rapid update on decks played the last event, results and other commentary.

I think giving each PRE it's own article even if a little delayed allows the players fromt hsoe events a little time before the reflection and newer or non-tournament Heirloom players a rewarding read in any case.

I want to thank everyone for the work they've done to make this format happen. I look forward to starting soon. I recently sold my collection but miss deck building, which makes this perfect.

I am trying to design a Desolation deck with flash fearies and instants. I hope to be on this page next time.

Great coverage.

Hey jeremy812,

Thanks for the fireballs and positive remarks. I certianly appreciate the community accreditation.

It has really been a strong group effort to get this format going and that continues to give it such life and nothing I've been doing would matter if not for all the interest, activity and support of the MTGO community for this format.

It's great that this is a format someone can jump head first into no matter what their collection status is. I like the fact that all types of MTG player can come together on equal footing here in the Heirloom format.

I look forward to watching your efforts to dominate future HPREs.

I can see that you've put a lot of work into the format and I'm happy to see that all the work is starting to pay off. I've never been a strong deckbuilder but your enthusiasm is contagious and I hope to participate in this Saturday's event if I can get this Accounting Project done. Even if I build something atrocious, it's still good old fun for a cheap price. If not this Saturday, I'll probably have the time for next week's event.

I like the format of the article, with the option to listen to the recording, links to buy decklists and even the video coverage at the end. I read through the article and didn't listen to the podcast and just wanted to know if you rapped THE SLIPPERY BIG? That would be hilarious, especially with the track on in the background. Keep up the good work.

Drbenwayy, I am happy with by Xaoslegend at Thu, 10/14/2010 - 00:59

Drbenwayy,

I am happy with the way things are growing for the format.

Your comment made me think of a couple of movie quotes: "The truth is a virus" -Pump up the volume- "Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure and time." -The Shawshank Redemption-

Great to hear you're going to give Heirloom a shot and come join the community for an event soon. Whenever time and motivation correspond to give you a window of opportunity to be at an event we'll be happy to have you regardless of what ragged creation you shamble into the HPRE square with, then again you might surprise yourself with your performance. It's a raw format still and sometimes what's going to work on a given day is hard to predict.

I did sort of rap the little diddy lol. No music in the background or anything and I should have gotten my wife to sing the *slippery* parts but I tried to give an impression of what I was hearing in my head heh.

Thanks for the compliments. I'll try to keep improving in the meantime.

Hey ya'll, Great program by Xaoslegend at Thu, 10/14/2010 - 19:39

Hey ya'll,

Great program built by Rincewind of Ashurst Mtg( http://ashhurstmtg.rpgwars.org/other-events-f16/) based out of New Zealand can be downloaded here: http://ashhurstmtg.rpgwars.org/other-events-f16/

It lets you search for cards by name very quickly, has the whole list as it is atm (make sure you check for updates as this program's list may become outdated) shows a picture of a card when teh card is selected, lets you build a deck (without sideboard distinction atm) and export that deck to forums like so: (Clearly doesnt work in this article response thread lol, works most places though) Decklist:
* 1 X AEther Tradewinds
* 4 X Akki Underling
* 3 X Roar of the Crowd
* 3 X Teferi's Puzzle Box
* 3 X Zombie Outlander
* 3 X Floodbringer
* 3 X Blazing Salvo
* 3 X Blinding Beam
* 2 X AEther Mutation
* 2 X AEther Charge

It has a funtion to check the legality of an imported list (though I'm unsure atm of how to format that easilty)

All and all the program is very efficient and useful.

Thanks a ton Rincewind, very cool creation for us and very appreciated effort

Check it out

Oh hey negative,

In what sense no love for permission?, no good cards?, people ragging on them?, It seems that permission has enough tools in Heirloom to protect combo or defeat combo, probably not enough to stop the aggro decks, those have been pretty absent so far though(a few more lately, still very low relative to most formats I see)

Anyhow glad to hear you're digging it. The next event is Saturday, (Tomorrow 11AM pacific standard time (LA,CA,USA) my time that is that time right now is 9:28 AM) Hope to see you there.

No. Only printings in sets count. Theme decks do not.

Well you're both kind of by Xaoslegend at Fri, 10/15/2010 - 17:21
Xaoslegend's picture

Well you're both kind of right,

Elspeth vs Tezzeret is a premade set and so does not determine the rarity for a card in any way for the purposes of establishing the price cap for that card. So Journey to Nowhere is still a common. Also Journey's legality was set when the Heirloom Legal Card List was first iterated. Now if Elseth vs Tezz journeys are available on Mtgotraders for .05 when a revision occurs that considers Journey to Nowhere than it would become legal. However such a revision will not occur until 1 Month after Scars of Mirrodin is released and at the time of the revision I will pay close attention to whether any Journeys are available at or below 5 cents that are in stock. This will be a little tricky since I don't want to base the legality of a card in Heirloom off a price that was never relevant to Mtgotraders. Usually they will wind up having gotten some stock of such a set but we will see, more Journeys being printed certianly helps the cards chances of making the cut when that first major revision occurs.

Just remember, not on the list, not legal, not going on the list till the next relevant revision (or in the case of my error which has happened on occasion but not in this case)

Sorry to hear you had trouble finding us last week,

I'll include a tentative list in the next article, but because my clinical rotation for school is somewhat erratic I'm probably going to have to adjust the days from the regular schedule some time or get someone else to run it. You can always find the time Here: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75846/25877457/Heirloom_MTGO... Or just leave me a message online, I usually check it at least once a day if not a few times a day.

Maybe I'll also have a regenerating announcement on the blog hub that deletes the only announcement and replaces it with the most recent each week.

Hey everyone,

We had 19 players for this week's event and things went very smoothly with no drops due to time contraints with the long slog of five rounds to overcome,

The standings were:

1st negative_optimist 5-0

2nd moromete 4-1
---------Won 4 tix and 2 foils

3rd HornedFish 4-1
---------Won 2 tix and 2 foils

4th jam33 4-1
---------Won 2 tix and 2 foils

Growing Pool by robsonsmith at Mon, 10/18/2010 - 00:52

I really like the way the players pool is growing, but I have a little concern about how fast the format will change and how we players can know which cards are still legal from one week to another.
I've been reading the articles about Heirloom, and i decided to give it a try next week, just built me a couple decks.

I've got some questions:
1- when are the tourneys, are the dates in the forum?
2- who i talk to to donate some cards to prize pool?

Thanks a lot and you can count on my support from now on.

Hey robsonsmith,

Great to have you in the party.

RE 1: The events are always announced here and are held every week on Saturday or Sunday at 11 AM standard pacific time (LA,CA, USA): http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75846/25877457/Heirloom_MTGO...
at least a few days before the event.

RE2: Most donations are given to me, sometimes you won't find me online until the next event as we keep missing each other. You can also give them to Nagarjuna if you see him or HoffeFin and I'm sure they wouldn't mind handing off a donation and telling me who gave it.

The Heirloom Legal Card list (http://puremtgo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2008&sid=10c2228d4b4466ac...) is static and only changes at preplanned times as card's legalities are revised for the cost they carry at that time. The next planned revisions will occur 1,2 and 3 weeks after the release date of Scars of Mirrodin on MTGO (not from the prerelease) just for SOM printed cards. Then a month after the release date a full revision of the Heirloom Legal Card List will occur. Until card's legality is revised they are illegal or legal based on their presence on the official list and not their current price.

Hope this all helps,
have a good one,

Goblins are pretty insane so by Xaoslegend at Tue, 10/19/2010 - 17:47

Goblins are pretty insane so yeah it's going to be hard to find decks that beat them consistently, though certianly decks that can afford to run a lot of cheap burn or board sweepers probably can, (the cycling deck for instance would probably have a good shot)

The event you won would be covered three article from now, so in a bit lol, (the next one is in que atm)

I'm still trying to catch up from when I had to essentially take a three week hiatus from writing to make the legal card list and then when my wife was hospitalized for awhile.

I'll get caught up on of these months lol, but you wouldn't want to share the spotlight of me covering your win with someone else's right?
