I. Introduction

Here we go! It's been another exciting week in the "league-style" Standard Pauper event being held by Hipsters of the Coast. Last week, I updated my readers on the events of Week 3 and videocast my match against fellow Standard Pauper enthusiast joekewwl. For this week's article, I will update you on the current state of the game, reveal who walked away with prizes this week, and discuss the decklist I will be playing for the rest of the event. And as always, I am grateful to Zachary Barash for providing some of the source material for this article. So, here's all the news that's fit to print from Week 4!

II. State of the Event

Of the original 152 players, 86 are still active going in to Round 5. Currently, 9 players are still undefeated, with another 34 sitting at 3-1 (includes byes). This event is scheduled to run through 8 rounds of Swiss followed by a cut to Top 8, so we've passed the halfway mark now and are headed for the finish line!

With the attention firmly focused on the upcoming release of Theros, there's been relatively little change in the metagame for the event. But I am happy to report that the host has commended the event participants for their communication, honesty, and sportsmanship, as well as everything they have done to keep this great event running smoothly. Hopefully next week I will have more metagame information to share.

III. Prizes This Week

As I mentioned previously, just for participating in this event, you have the chance to walk away with a booster pack each week, given out to two random participants regardless of their success. Additionally, the Hipsters of the Coast team are all playing in this event, and special prizes can be won by defeating them in matches. So here's who walked away with what this past week:

  • Ben H wins a booster pack of Legions!
  • Nick G wins a booster pack of Return to Ravnica!
  • Grao wins a foil Victorious Destruction and a foil Frazzle for knocking out Hunter!

The four remaining Hipsters went undefeated this round, so no additional bounties were paid out. Congratulations once again to all those who walked away with prizes this week!

IV. Matches This Week

For the second week in this event, my opponent had to concede without actually playing out our match. This essentially means another free win for me, putting me at 2-2. Of course, thus far my only wins have come from these concessions! However, as I mentioned last week, I have decided to switch to a new decklist for the rest of the event. This decklist came to me by way of joekewwl, whose has been a major proponent of this list. Here's what his list looks like:

While Selesnya is probably not the strongest deck in the format, I feel like it matches up well against most of the other decks in current metagame. The fact that the deck can drop a large number of creatures fairly quickly makes it a tougher matchup for control, while the early creatures and lifegain make it quite resilient against aggro. Even better, with a proper Sideboard, the deck has the ability to side in relevant cards against essentially every archetype in the format! If you want to check out how this deck plays out, check out my match from last week.

While I thought this version was strong, I wanted to make my own adjustments to the list. I dropped the Keening Apparitions and Prey Upons, shuffled around some of the other spells, added an additional Travel Preparations, and included a playset of Loyal Cathar. For the Sideboard, I really wanted to play Ray of Revelation for the Hexproof matchup as well as Beckon Apparition for the Flickergate matchup. When all was done, here's how my version came together:
