I. Introduction

It's hard to believe another week has come and gone in the "league-style" Standard Pauper event being held by Hipsters of the Coast. Last week, I updated my readers on the events of Week 2 and videocast two different matches from that week. For this week's article, I will update you on the current state of the game, reveal who walked away with prizes this week, and show you the results of my match for the week. And as always, I am grateful to Zachary Barash for providing some of the source material for this article. So, with that said, let's get started!

II. State of the Event

Of the original 152 players, 100 are still active going in to Round 4. Currently, 17 players are still undefeated, with another 47 sitting at 2-1. This event is scheduled to run through 8 rounds of Swiss followed by a cut to Top 8, so we are nearly to the half-way mark for this great event.

This week I got a chance to interact with Zachary about the current metagame via Twitter. Here's what he had to say:

Believe it or not, the top decks appear quite similar to the ones that I predicted would dominate back before the beginning of this great event: MonoBlue Flyers, Flickergate, and Izzet, with a strong showing by both Extort and Boros. Less surprising is the fact that Blue appears to be the most popular color, represented as is among the three most popular deck choices. Finally, while I have not yet had a chance to play against either of the innovative decks that Zachary mentions, it just goes to show just how much depth is truly possible in Standard Pauper!

III. Prizes This Week

As I mentioned previously, just for participating in this event, you have the chance to walk away with a booster pack each week, given out to two random participants regardless of their success. Additionally, the Hipsters of the Coast team are all playing in this event, and special prizes can be won by defeating them in matches. So here's who walked away with what this past week:

  • Brendan McNamara wins a booster of Exodus!
  • Luke Burnett wins a booster of Magic 2014!
  • Steve wins a Foil Murder of Crows for beating Hipster’s own Monique!
  • Marcian wins a Foil Innistrad Ancient Grudge for beating Hipster’s own Zachary Barash!
  • James Bathurst wins a Foil Faithless Looting for beating Hipster's own Hunter!

Congrats to all those who won prizes this week!

IV. Matches This Week

In case you've forgotten, here's what I am currently playing in this event:

While I still think this is a strong deck, this will be the last week that I run this particular build. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's how my match went this week against my good friend and fellow Standard Pauper expert joekewwl:

Sadly, this puts me at 1-2 for the event thus far. Still, I couldn't have lost to a better player, and I wish him all the best in the rest of the event! And who knows? Even with two losses, I still might have a chance (however remote) to make Top 8. We shall see!

As an additional bonus this week, I want to let you know about my fellow Standard Pauper player Anomolus who has also been recording his matches for this great event. You can find a link to all his current video content here; you can also find his match from Week 3 of this event below:
