I. Introduction

Over the next couple months or so (leading up to the online release of Theros), I will be providing ongoing coverage of the "league-style" Standard Pauper event being held by Hipsters of the Coast. Last week, I updated my readers on the events of Week 1 and did a quick introduction and video on the decklist I played. In this week's article, I will update you on the current state of the game, reveal who walked away with prizes this week, and highlight several matches from this past week. As always, I am grateful to Zachary Barash for providing some of the source material for this article. So, with that said, let's get started!

II. State of the Event

Of the original 152 players, 115 are still active going in to Round 3. Currently, 18 players are still undefeated, and another 61 are 1-1. This event is scheduled to run through 8 rounds of Swiss followed by a cut to Top 8, so there still are a lot of matches to be played!

While the host did not make any metagame information available, he did post this sweet Gwub Hexproof brew:

Here's what Zachary had to say:

I love playing this deck. You get to swing in with giant monsters and end the game with a 50 point life difference between you and your opponent. You can be losing horribly, suit up a creature with Mark of the Vampire, attack, and suddenly you’ve won the race. In the metagame, it seems to have an excellent matchup against BUGkeepers (which is the most popular decks in our tournament) and a good matchup against blue decks (Electrodelver and monoblue skies being the other two most popular decks).

If you're curious, you can read the entire article here.

III. Prizes This Week

As I mentioned previously, just for participating in this event, you have the chance to walk away with a booster pack each week, given out to two random participants regardless of their success. Talk about value! Additionally, the Hipsters of the Coast team are all playing in this event, and special prizes can be won by defeating them in matches. So here's who walked away with what this week:

  • MattP81 wins a booster of Rise of the Eldrazi!
  • Lacio wins a booster of Magic 2014!
  • The Hipsters of the Coast went undefeated in Week 2, so there are no bounty prizes for the round!

IV. Matches This Week

This week I am delighted to present several matches from the past week. The first is joekewwl (playing White Weenie) vs DrPepperGod (playing MonoBlue flyers). The second is Malum (playing MonoBlue flyers) vs Xaorkx (playing Bant Hexproof). The third is myself (playing IzzetClops) vs juronu (playing Gruul Aggro). Unfortunately, my match is merely a practice match, as my opponent had to go out of town unexpectedly and so ended up conceding to me without us ever playing out the match. Of course, this does mean that I am now 1-1!

That wraps things up for this week. Stay tuned for my updates from all the action of Week 3!
