Hello, I’m Fernando new to this community and I will try to write at least every week a draft or a sealed for you guys to check out what I was thinking when drafting and my results. Today I’ll start with a M11 draft. So let’s check out what I did

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

This first pick is pretty easy to catch, the only cards that I would consider first picking are the Serra Angel, Cultivate and the Gargoyle Sentinel and by far the angel was the most impressive of all.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Wow, two armored ascension, shiv embrace, and the rest is not that impressive, this is an easy pick because I already had the angel and I wouldn’t risk to take other color for now so the foil ascension is awesome to us.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Yeah, I know I should have taken the crusader, but a dual in a combination of colors that I might play isn’t so bad.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Not many good cards in our colors here, the cards I might play are hawks and adept and I will play adept although I don’t have 3 or 4.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

A second adept, and an assault griffin. We take the flier thinking it may be best to go aggro with this deck than to go tempo.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Again the only cards are flashfreeze and unsummon and like Steve Sadin says “First draft your deck then your sideboard” so We take the unsummon

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Blinding Mage and Yavimaya Wurm 7 pick! Awesome white is wide open!

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Infantry Veteran is in our colors and it’s better than the lion so we take it.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Rare drafting.

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

The combat trick is better than the other two in our colors, so we take that.

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Yaay! He got back!

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

Awesome, nobody is picking white so we take the safe passage gladly.

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Ok, this pack is good but not in our colors Mystifying Maze and Gargoyle Sentinel are the only one that we would consider taking and we like removal better than flyers, so we took the maze.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Again nothing in our colors, the only good card is Preordain so we take it.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

White Knight is an awesome dude, it has evasion and first strike and if we can enchant it with Ascension against Mono Black we are almost on the other side so we take it.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

So we now have a descision if we take the Safe Passage, most likely the Roc Egg wouldn’t come back but if we take the Roc Egg we still have the remote possiblity that the Safe Passage would come back, like the one of the first pack, so we take the Egg and hope for the best.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Removal against flyers. Not very difficult descision pacifism will always come handful meanwhile the hawks are very situational, so we take the pacifism.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

We’ve seen two already, but we hope for the other hawk to return and we take it.

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

There’s nothing in our colors, we rare draft here.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Nice, another safe passage is welcome here.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Diminish is a nice combat trick so we take it over Veteran.

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

An easy pick, the Arbiter is a great bomb and it’s in our colors so we don’t think twice and take it.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

We have one mage already and this is a tough choice but after thinking a bit, we take the Blinding Mage because it will be better in most of the situations.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

We need creatures, and the Griffin isn’t bad so we take it.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Ok, the same thought I had with the last pack safe passage, if we let pass the Crusader maybe it will come back so we take the Scroll Thief.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

A mage in a pack that wasn’t good for us so I guess it’s ok
  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Another Griffin we gladly take.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

The war priest will take out things like Pacifism, Ice cage, and stuff like that, so we take it.

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 10:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 11:

So we ended up with a nice draft, and the final deck is:

This is a nice deck, with a lot of creatures (fifteen) a lot of removal (seven) and a lot of good finishers like Serra Angel, Arbiter and also Armored ascension can work out as one, we have a low curve so we can work out as control or as an aggro deck depending on the opponent’s deck and we can change it a little bit with the sideboard we have, if the matchup is very aggressive we can side in the third safe passage and also the excommunicate,  we have a lot of answers to common draft staples like ice cage or pacifism with war priest and we can handle pretty much every creature in the format, Diminish give us removal in our weak color so we don’t worry about Black Knight, we have 17 lands only because we have a low curve, almost all our spells are in 2/3 CMC while our finishers are in 4/5/7 we almost stop at 4 CMC as we have only one on 5 and one on 7, with that explained we are ready to start the matches.

Round 1

Game 1:

We won the roll and chose to play first, we are forced to mulligan (Serra Angel, Pacifism, Assault Griffin, Blinding Mage, White Knight, Cloud Crusader, Infantry Veteran) our oponnent keeps, and we keep as well (2 Plains, 2 Island, Aether Adept, War Priest).

[T: 1] We play our plains and pass the turn, our opponent plays a mountain and passes away.

[T: 9] [D: Armored Ascension] We play the Ascension on our knight making it a 4/4 Flyer and attack with it [O: 12] we pass the turn back. Our opponent plays a swamp and attack with assassin and servant [W: 10] he then casts a rotting legion and pass.

[T: 10] [D: Plains] We play our plains making our knight 5/5 and attack [O: 7] postcombat we cast Angelic Arbiter and pass. Our opponent attacks with servant and legion, we block the legion and our opponent concedes.

Game 3:

We are on the draw an we keep [3 Island, Preordain, Scroll Thief, Safe Passage, Armored Ascension] our opponent keeps his seven as well.

[T: 1] Our opponent plays swamp and passes [D: Assault Griffin] We play island and cast preordain we see [Infantry Veteran, Roc Egg : bottom] [D: Armored Ascension 2] and pass

[T: 2] Our opponent plays mountain and passes [D: Plains] We had an awesome draw here and play our plains and pass.

Round 2:

Game 1:

Sadly I don’t have the replay of the only game but I remember it was a stall until my opponent conceded around turn 17 realizing he can’t win. It was a GW aggro deck with Honor of the Pure and Vengeful Archon. He then conceded the match.

Round 3:

We are against a GU deck with a lot of quality creatures like Cudgel Troll and Air Servant so we have to be careful

Game 1:

We lose the roll and we keep a hand of [Island, 2 Plains, Preordain, Blinding Mage, Serra Angel, Cloud Crusader] our opponents keeps his seven also.

[T: 1] Our opponent plays Island and pass [D: Plains] We play an island and cast Preordain seeing [Pacifism: top, Plains: bottom] [D: Pacifism] and we pass.

[T: 4] Our opponent plays a forest and casts Azure Drake [D: War Priest] We play our plains and cast Blinding mage.

[T: 5] Our opponent plays a forest and then casts a second Cultivate revealing 2 Island we tap our opponent drake and post combat he plays a Cloud Elemental.    [D: Plains] We think for a bit of casting Serra angel but we decide to cast Cloud crusader instead.

[T: 6] Our opponent plays a forest we tap his drake again he attacks with Cloud elemental, we let him pass fearing a Diminish or a Giant Growth [W: 18]  He then plays plummet on our Cloud Crusader and casts Cudgel Troll [D: Plains] We play our plains, pacifism the troll and attack with the Griffin [O: 17] Post combat we cast War Priest, deciding not to use the ability to destroy pacifism and pass back.

[T: 7] We tap our opponent Drake and Cloud Elemental, then he plays Greater Basillisk and a terramorphic expanse witch he cracks to get an island                  [D: Angelic Arbiter] We attack with the griffin [O: 15] and play Serra Angel.

[T: 8] Our opponent played a main phase naturalize on pacifism and we tap the troll in response, he then attacks with his Basillisk. [W: 15] he passes. [D: Safe Passage] We attack with serra angel only and he double blocks like it was expected, we safe passage in response saving our angel and killing his drake.

[T: 9] We tap our opponent’s Troll and Basillisk, post combat he casts a Giant Spider. [D: Plains] We play our plains and attack with Serra Angel, he double blocks again and we kill the spider we then cast Arbiter.

[T: 10] Our opponent decides not to casts spells and attacks with basillisk [W: 12] and he plays a forest. [D: Roc Egg] We attack with arbiter [O: 10] and cast a post combat Roc Egg.

[T: 11] Our opponent draws and decides he’s done and concedes.

Game 2:

We keep [3 Plains, Blinding Mage, Unsummon, Glacial Fortress, Angelic Arbiter] and our opponent does the same with his seven.

[T: 1] Our opponent plays forest and passes. [D: Island] We play our Island and pass.

[T: 2] Our opponent plays island and casts Augury Owl [2 Bottom, 1 Top] and passes [D: Armored Ascension] We play our Glacial Fortress and cast our Blinding Mage.

[T: 3] Our opponent plays an Island and casts Runeclaw Bear, he then attacks us with Owl [W: 19] and passes. [D: Mystifying Maze] We play a plains and pass the turn without a spell.

[T: 4] Our opponent plays a forest and tried to attack but we tap his runeclaw bear and only attacks us with owl [W: 18] post combat he casts a Water Servant [D: Cloud Crusader] We play our plains and cast crusader.

[T: 5] Our opponent attacks us with Water Servant and pumps it 2 times [W: 13] He then casts a warlord axe. [D: Preordain] We play our plains and Preordained [War Priest Of Thune, Assault Griffin : Top] [D: Assault Griffin] We attacked with Crusader [O: 18] and pass.

[T: 6] Our opponent equiped Axe to Bear and we Tapped it in response he then attacked with Water Servant and Owl, in his attempt to pump the servant we unsummoned it [W: 12] [D: War Priest] We played our maze, attacked with Crusader [O: 16] and casted Assault Griffin before passing.

[T: 7] We tap our opponent bear and post combat he casted again Water Servant [D: Wild Griffin] We attacked with Assault and Crusader but he casted plummet on our griffin [O: 14] We casted wild griffin and war priest before passing the turn.

[T: 8] Our opponent equipped axe to owl and attacked with Servant and Bear we blocked Bear with Priest and our opponent pumped the servant 3 times [W: 6]    [D: Plains] We played our plains and attacked with our flyers [O: 10]  and passed.

[T: 9] Our opponent played Acidic Slime, wastelanding our maze and we tapped the Servant in response and he attacked with the owl [W: 2] [D: Plains] At this point if we had been thinking clearly we could have won because we had 5 plains and an armored ascension making a 6/7 our blinding mage and with our flyers it would be lethal, but we didn’t make that so we loss the game because of our misplays.

Game 3:

There’s also no replay for this one but he won at last time by naturalizing my pacifism and alpha striking for the win.

Next article, you might want to try I instead of we. I'm uncomfortable feeling responsible for your play mistakes. D:

I don't know what happened to me but I swear i'm not that bad, well most of the time I'm not that bad! But thanks for your commentary I'll improve it the next time :)

Yea I was a little confused as well.
From the intro to pick 4, you used "I" but starting from pick 5 to the end of the article you used "We" and "Our". Very confusing.

Still a great first article tho, I enjoyed reading it, thanks!

I seriously wonder why you by ChardOne at Thu, 08/12/2010 - 15:09

I seriously wonder why you are bothering with blue cards. The ones you ended up running are pretty weak so it seems like you took that Glacial Fortress and felt the need to justify it. In the case of a lot of your blue picks there's an equal or better white card to take. Hawk vs Adept for example.

Why are you rare drafting crappy Leylines? Both times there were valid cards to hate on that help you more than adding a 25 cent card to your collection. Giant Spider, Mind Rot or Harbor Serpent (with you insisting on playing islands...).

I'm curious to hear other opinions on the P3 P1 pick. 7 is awfully high on the curve for a white deck not decidated to the control path with good blue support. Or with green ramp, I guess. Would anyone else have looked long and hard at the Doom Blade to go along with the Assassinate and Deathmark that I would have taken earlier. Ending up in a nearly mono-white aggro deck with a small black removal / mind rot splash.

I agree with the other comments. Fairly good for a 1st article.

In the future I would like a bit more visual difference. Maybe some screenshots or card examples. Its not very encouraging to see 50 lines of text beneath :)

As well as ChardOne, I am seriously confused by your move into blue. There were absolutely no good cards in that color compared to black - and even green.

Anyways, keep up the work! Its nice to hear about someone else' drafting stategies.

I like limited walkthroughs, and its always nice to see another perspective on the only format I even play anymore. Your walkthrough style is fine, but a few screenshots of interesting board positions, even cropped pictures of starting hands that get kept/shipped, would go a long way towards strengthening your work. Pictures are the car chases of magazines, its what keeps people paying attention long enough to absorb the plot(the point) your trying to get across. Writing in the digital format is difficult; internet readers have a lot of info jockeying for their attention. Look at the successfull authors on this site and you'll see lots and lots of pretty pictures. Also, read the article titled "Playwright" on this site.

I agree with the other posters about committing to blue too early. Blue is a very strong color, but that also means your going to fight over it. You went into it when you still had solid picks in the color you needed to cut off, and had some other strong picks in black and green later on. Not sure UW was your best choice. Definitely W/X or even W, but I think the blue was scraped together here.

I do hope to see more articles by you, hopefully next week. Thanks for posting this.

You could've had the perfect tempo deck had you fully committed to it. Adepts only get better in multiples, so I'm not sure why, after picking up 1, you didn't just move into it.

Thank everybody for your comments, and I didn't take black because personally I don't like W/B combination of colors in this format, although it would be nice mono white with doom blade deathmark splash, but anyway thank you very much.
