This week I'm showcasing two Magic Origins drafts.  After my complete failure in last week's Flashback draft, I decided to stay away from them until possibly the next core set that's featured.  I haven't drafted any OGW/BFZ, and with SOI out next week, instead of building by knowledge up for that and SOI I went with double Magic Origins instead.  Next week I expect to feature two SOI drafts.  I will probably do OGW/BFZ drafts in future articles but the timing just didn't work out for this week.

For each draft below, I have the video playlist showcasing the draft, deckbuilding and all rounds, followed by the visual draft picks and brief comments on the draft and the games. Now let's get to our feature presentations!

Draft Notes

I passed several good Red cards in the start of the first round, it's possible it would have been the right call to go in that direction.  In Pack 3, Pick 6, I don't know why I didn't take the Disciple of the Ring.  I think I blanked and in my head saw it as an enchantment instead of a creature.

Round 1

Game 1

Each of us started the game building out our board.  At a key moment, I attacked with all creatures including my Soulblade Djinn.  I had a Disperse ready in hand.  He blocked the Djinn With Ringwarden owl.  I cast Disperse targeting the owl, but he Negated it.  He then also cast (Enshrouding Mists) targeting his owl so that it would survive combat.  Still, I got through for 7 damage and left him with just the owl and a thopter token.  Whirler Rogue ended up helping seal the deal by making our Rabid Bloodsucker unblockable.

Game 2

For some reason on the fourth turn I didn't pump the Watercourser to put through 2 more damage - a mistake on my part.  I only had 3 lands through 6 turns so I was starving for mana and lost this one.

Game 3

I brought in another Rabid Bloodsucker and took out a Possessed Skaab to get another flyer.  I probably used my Separatist Voidmage too early - something I need to look out for in the future to make sure I get maximum value.  Game started out well for me, bringing him down to 10 life while I was at 20.  He cast Knightly Valor on Rhox Maulers giving him an 8/8 with trample with vigilance.  I made a misplay by leaving up an Island and Swamp rather than 2 Islands to pump (Water Courser), which I had left up for blocks.  He did end up casting Claustrophobia targeting it, making my misplay irrelevant.  Then, I misplayed when blocking Rhox Maulers thinking that my other creatures' power total 8 life when it was only 7.  I don't think it made a difference in the end result though, and I conceded next turn.

Round 2

Bye!

Round 3

Game 1

Opponent was playing a GB elves deck.  I had a misplay in the first game where my opponent cast Wild Instincts and I cast a Nivix Barrier thinking I would be able to bring down his creature's power.  Of course, his creature is not considered attacking so I was not able to target it. Ended up losing this one.

Game 2

I was able to eventually get a nice board state including a Nantuko Husk, a Whirler Rogue, and two Thopters. On the winning turn, I made Nantuko Husk unblockable and before damage sacrificed creatures to pump him to deal lethal damage to my opponent.

Game 3

I was able to hit my curve and get out a nice stream of blue creatures to win the match and leave the draft with 2-1 record.

Draft Notes

Through the first round I ended up with cards in every color, though most heavily in white followed by black and red.  Once I got through the second pack it was clear my second color would be red.  It's possible I could have made a few better picks in the first pack had I stuck with red all the way through but I didn't want to force it if I really should have been a different color.

Round 1

Game 1

Up against an aggressive Blue/Red deck, I had a misplay blocking an Akroan Sergeant with a Cobblebrute, forgetting about first strike.  Gideon's Phalanx ended up being the game changer after he attacked in with all of his creatures, and I was able to continue putting on pressure for the win.

Game 2

I sideboarded in the 2 Yoked Ox to help as blockers in the early game.  He ended up stuck on one land for the game, getting me the win for the match.

Round 2

Game 1

This opponent was playing a White/Black deck.

Watching the replay, I think it might have been a better choice to play Consul's Lieutenant turn 2 rather than the Subterranean Scout.

Eventually he was able to get Knightly Valor on a renowned Stalwart Aven, giving him a 4/6 flyer with vigilance.  Key turn to keep me in the game was when I attacked into that and a Fetid Imp taking him down to 5 life to my 9.  The following turn, he took me down to 3, but then on my turn I cast Titan's Strength on my Heavy Infantry to kill his Stalwart Aven.  I go down to 1 life, but then cast Aven Battle Priest on my turn to bring me back up to 4.  Unfortunately he cast Unholy Hunger targeting the Priest and used the Throwing Knife against my only other blocker to deal lethal.

Game 2

I sideboard in the Yoked Ox and take out the 2 Cobblebrute.  I got out an early Knight of the Pilgrim's Road, and that combined with Anointer of Champions let me deal a good amount of early damage and I ended up winning this one.

Game 3

Kept a 2 Mountain opening hand with my only red card being a Fiery Impulse, though luckily my opponent took a few mulligans to give me some advantage.  I end up not being able to cast a spell other than that until I get a Plains on turn 5.  My opponent takes the lead and gets me down to 5 life, but I'm able to take him down to the same in the following turn and follow through to win the match.

Round 3

Game 1

This opponent was playing White/Black.  He takes me down to 4 to his 25, but I am able to cast Gideon's Phalanx, followed by Chandra's Fury during his next attack to take care of a bunch of Thopter tokens.  I'm able to come back from this deficit for the win.

Game 2

Brought in the 2 Yoked Ox again from the sideboard.  With an early misplay I mistakenly used a Titan's Strength and lost a Knight of the Pilgrim's Road due to miscounting power and toughness. I wasn't able to match him creature for creature and I lost this one.

Game 3

Through the 5th turn, we were both at 20 life, and it looked like I had a better board state, though he had 6 cards in hand to my 2.  Again I had a misplay with Titan's Strength miscounting power and toughness.  Another misplay I noticed on the replay was that I could have attacked with the Akroan Sergeant into his 2/3 and 2/2 and been able to survive, as the sergeant would have been able to kill one of the creatures before any damage was dealt to him.  My opponent was able to get out a Hangarback Walker and overtake the board.  Before the final turn I was able to draw Gideon's Phalanx, but it wasn't enough to hold him off, losing the game and match to give me a final record for the event of 2-1.

Thanks for watching/reading!
