The Heirloom Link Hub          The always up to date Heirloom Legal Card List          The Heirloom classic constructed weekly PRE thread         The Heirloom sealed league: "Parallel Universe" thread       The Heirloom website       The web based Heirloom legality checker and search tool

Hey guys,

So this is mostly just going to be a quick report on the event from Oct 24. I'm trying to get caught up so that my articles will be more up to date.

We've had a good amount of preregistration for the Heirloom sealed league "Parallel Universe" up to 19 so far with a week to go before we start so that looks like it's going to be another really solid Heirloom event.

For this article I'd like to feature Nagarjuna as the 3rd Heirloom Media contest winner for the Heirloom website. I already mentioned him with the first winner as an honorable mention but really his efforts have been pretty huge with the website and that's more than enough for a tip of my hat. I'll offer him the 3 tix though if I know Naga he's more than likely to refuse, maybe I'll have to get creative heh. Here's a screenshot from the site if you haven't visited it already:

Remember that until the end of November you can enter yourself for a chance to win tix and foils from Nagarjuna's own collection just by signing up!

I thought this was a pretty cool comment from "Tapped Out" where I announce the events sometimes:

"Zanven says:

I just finished reading all of your articles about Heirloom. *Very* interesting looking format, and I tip my hat to you for all the work it looks like you've been putting into it (especially rebutting all of your naysayers of the format).

I'd always been hesitant to play MTGO because I already spend enough money on cards in real life, but this format seems like it's exactly what I'd want. My initial concern was "Hey, if everyone starts buying good Heirloom cards, won't it drive up the prices and make the format cave in on itself?", but I saw you answered that in one of your articles. The format would have to become massively popular in order for that to happen (which would be good for you, since it'd show how cool of an idea is, but bad for your format lol).

I'll definitely look into starting up an MTGO account later, I am loving the sound of this format."

Great to hear positive remarks from new people and it'll be great to see Zanven online sometime soon. Personally I don't think the price issue is ever going to be that big, if it becomes worse than is tolerable because of the big breaks between revisions I can always just increase the frequency of the schedule.

On the 24th of October we had 18 players and the inclusion of the famous AJ_Impy. Strangely enough even before AJ had played a single event someone found his decklist and brought it to this event! Now that's what I call street cred lol. It was a Jund version of Lightning Rift taking advantage of the spell-like effects of it's cycling to include the epic spell Undying Flames.

There were a lot of just very cool decks brought to this event. Certainly Aj's was a great innovation on Lightning Rift then there was Nagarjuna's Quest for Ula's Temple deck that went 3-1. I saw some absolutely sick turns from that monstrosity. Stormtide Leviathan just says "No." to ground based attacks lol and can bring you back from the jaws of defeat into certain victory, no joke. We also had from jacksweeney000 the most expensive Heirloom deck I've seen yet in the 250 card Battle of Wits deck that managed 3-1! I was like "No. Friggen. Way." Huge guys just huge. I'm lovin it heh.

However it would turn out to be another successful event for a player bringing the mogg monster. This time negative_optimist had to duck out early to take his friend to the hospital who it seems doesn't know how to wield his sword safely (something about a whole lot of stitches in the arm) Without his participation we had a total of two goblin decks banking on the proven effectiveness of the tribe.

Each person's version of goblins has been their own with pretty strong differences in their maindecks. Olaw plays without Goblin Burrows and only one Shared Animosity he also forgoes Goblin King for a faster mana curve and finds enough room for a good amount of burn in Lightning Bolt and Shard Volley. Looks like the variation works well enough to beat 17 other players to the top of the heap.

All and all goblins appear to be outclassing most of what is being brought to these events. Here there were two goblin decks that played till the final round and they placed first and second (Nagarjuna was the one in the final round with the winner, his tie-breakers just weren't as good). That with the event before this being taken by negative_optimist that makes three versions of goblins with three different pilots all finishing very high. Something to take note of while building sideboards and choosing the deck you're going to run.

Here are the results of the event and decklists:

"Not sure it's quite the right build but it seemed to work.  Sideboard needs tweaking too, only used Flame Jab and not sure I like the Leyline."

2nd       frog_master

"Was going to have a different sideboard, but a saving mistake to care of that.
There will be changes including the removing of Zo-Zu. Just took up a 3 or lower spot and did nothing. Also might go back down to 16 lands, but that may just lead to bad open hands with no lands and that won't do."

3rd       jacksweeney000

4rth       jeremy812

6th       Nagarjuna   *HG-Thuh-Nagarjuna*

"All matches I won where very close! Winning on the play and losing on the draw most of the time. 3 round I won versus goblins just one turn before he would beet me in two games. Next round lost the other way two times...."

7th       victorBike

8th       AJ_Impy

"I thought I'd give this a shot with a fun little epic rift cycledeck. Amusingly, my first game was the mirror match with the above deck based on mine. I always enjoy seeing my creations in action in other people's hands: If they like it that much, it means I'm doing something right. :D"

9th       ChrisMH77

"Another 2-2 performance. Had a rough time against Goblins and Rouges today. All in all it was a good time."

14th     RedMan929

"Here's my decklist, which is insanely close to what AJImpy was running... Story behind that is that I had an Astral Slide deck I was thinking of running, then ran into his deck practicing one day... next time I should ask if he's going to run the deck before I copy it Embarrassed"

"Went 5-6, losing 1-2 the first three rounds and then winning 2-0 the last round... all the games were pretty close... :P Alas, I think I may bring a different deck next week. For one I shouldn't copy other peep's decks (especially without consulting them first) and secondly, I just don't get lucky enough with this deck to win consistently, so it seems."

16     tiny70

"Went 1-3, so some improvement may be in the works."

"I tweaked last week's deck, but probably made it worse.
Fun to play and actually wins casual matches, but totally worthless in a tournament against skilled players Wink"

"If you could fight anyone, who would you fight?"

"Shatner. I'd fight William Shatner."

That was a tough event for me. My silly deck went toe to toe with Naga's Leviathans deck first round and he squeaked out the win in the end. Then I beat some deck I don't remember and lost in the 3rd round and dropped. I ran the following

Violentlanche

4 Diabolic Tutor
4 Violent Ultimatum
4 Naya Charm
4 Lavalanche
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Harrow
3 Rampant Growth
3 Khalni Heart Expedition
3 Krosan Tusker
4 terramorphic expanse
2 plains
4 swamp
6 mountain
8 forest

sb:
3 pyroclasm
4 acidic slim
4 dodecapod
4 void

Hey Xaos,

great article as always!

Thanks for mentioning the website again. I like the idea to have a place where you can find all the links, rules, discusions and ideas of the Heirloom Universe! Maybe the site will reach its limits soon if the Heirloom Universe is still expanding as fast as now, but for the moment it makes sense to me.

The "Big Fish" Deck is my favourite up to now. The matches were always close and interesting, only facing gobos in round 3 AND 4 was to much in the end! If I only get another beast like Stormtide Leviathan from upcomming sets!!! Even for classic only crap fills the creature types the Quest supports....

I think Steven Spielberg for me,

that guy has ruined so many good scripts with such good actors and funding. =P
