Heirloom Constructed Classic Season "Zero" finals coverage

Parallel Universe Sealed league results and coverage

And so more time has passed and more Heirloom as been played. If you were not aware of the sealed league we've been running I'll just bring you up to speed really quick. Flippers_Giraffe went ahead and converted the entire legal card list into excel and programmed a function into it to create "Heirloom Booster Packs" out of it at the click of a button. So based on that new technology I've been running the league for almost two weeks now. We've gotten more than fifty registrants and the group is still growing.

A couple details about the rules:

*   People are allowed to play as many matches as they can find other registered opponents each week.
*   Standings are based on total matches won with no regard other than for tiebreakers on match win percentage. This has been great for people that have lots of time on their hands and like playing their limited pool a lot.

Pros. Cons. I think there are more of the former than the latter so I'm happy with the net result. I ran past five matches even with very limited time week one very quickly and still wanted to play more and more. I think there is plenty to be said for limiting each week's total matches to five or some other number and that assigned pairings can be another good way to go. The unlimited matches gives the event a more casual feel though and I try to give out a good amount of prizes at random just for playing three or more matches and the two foils everyone gets if they play three or more is another way to increase the benefit for moderate participation.

I'm happy to announce that we have a special event scheduled for Saturday the 29th of January. In collaboration with Flippers_Giraffe we will have an Heirloom Tribal event that day at 12:30 PM eastern standard time AKA  9:30 AM pacific standard time(actual event start is 30 mins later, allow 30 mins for registration). This will be an Heirloom Tribal event meaning that all cards must be Heirloom legal and one third of your deck must be of one single tribe and no sideboards are allowed as far as I know (so 20 cards in a 60 card deck). You are allowed 60 mins instead of 30 mins for this event and Flippers_Giraffe and I are combining prizes for the event so you'll get the most of both . Look for updates about the event as we get closer to the kickoff.

I would also like to announce a new Heirloom Godfather: *HG-M-Howitzer-Lucky-7's* (ChrisMH77). He has been a very active player as well as contributor to our Heirloom events as well as being a great all around guy (as opposed to most of the rest of you ). He is henceforth a permanent idol of our cult. He cannot be unseated by crime or dematerialization. May Snarf save his eternal essence. Hee-oh-yay  Hee-ah-yay. And so he is One.

We've had a couple of media contributions that I wanted to make special note of. Many of you may already have read his last couple of articles, *HG-Our-Lord-Ermanhas recently published two articles talking about Heirloom in his "Rogue Play" series. They both talk about our format and the second focuses on it exclusively and asserts the case for the integrity of the format with emphatic excellence as well as going into great detail about a number of ways he has found great success in it. That makes Lord-Erman our 'Heirloom Media Contributor' award winner for this article entitling him to the modest earning of 3 tix or 3 bot credits from me .

Check out his latest articles along with any of his extensive list of older articles here:  Lord Erman's Articles

Taking a note from some of the other authors that cover events here on Puremtgo I've decided to switch mine to last first and first last. If I had thought about it to begin with I would have immediately realized that this is far more interesting for the reader.

This was the season finals for season "Zero" of Heirloom classic constructed that was the last to allow a number of cards that have gone up in prize over the two months since the original list was created. It was also the last time before a number of new cards became legal for season two. All of the predictions I had about those changes from This Article awhile back came true.

As usual I'll let the players and their decks from the event speak for themselves:

"Last week's deck with tweaks.
I didn't have time to test it properly, but it can either win in 6 rounds or lose in 5, which means that I played all the event on the edge of my chair (despite I ended at 1-3, I won at least one game in every match laughing).
Congrats to Nagarjuna, and many many thanks to Xaos for this wonderful format!"

12th     jmtest

"I've been using this for the last 4 weeks with slight change in sideboard. With varying success: 3-1, 2-2, 3-1, 1-3
Will need to decide if I still want to play red in the new season. Once again thank you Xaos for the enjoyable event."

10th     caterpillar_69

"I didn't have any deck I was really happy with this week, but I thought I'd give this a try. Obviously a Shared Fate deck. With the exception of Wizard Replica, there are no win conditions that the opponent can draw off my deck that will kill me once I resolve Shared Fate. Before that happens, I try to empty the opponent's hand with Duress and Persecute and kill their creatures with the black removal spells or the small counter suite. If I draw a Teferi's Puzzle Box I try to cast it before Shared Fate, and if I draw a Diminishing Returns I wait until afterwards to cast that. The effect of either with a Shared Fate out is that any cards that were lurking in the opponent's hand get discarded so that they'll just be drawing my junk."

"Despite the amount of removal I had between main deck and sideboard, I still lost a few games to creature beatdown. The main reasons for my losses were down to lack of coloured mana. I had hoped that with 8 mana artifacts I could play fewer lands than normal, but that decision hurt me in the end. I also lost one game by misclicking colours for Persecute."

"Overall, a weird deck, but it was definitely fun to play. If I'd put in an extra couple of land (taking out a Force Spike and an Infest, probably) and hadn't made silly play errors, I think it could have gone 3-1 or 4-0. It's really not as bad as it looks! "

"Thanks to everyone who played, and to Xaoslegend for all the hard work and support for the format!"

8th    OMC11

"I played my old list. This went 2-2, going down to merfolk and to Etriol's artifacts.
Thanks for another enjoyable event Xaos!"

5th    Ranth

"I had noticed that gobs have been wrecking face and that there was a fair amount of black so I brought a narrow haterade deck to the party."

3rd    mrjebus27

"...a version of mono green beats. Lost to Naga... Hypergenesis rules. It was fun to play. Doesn't stand much of a chance vs. combo though. It's always fun to win with an overrun"

"...only loss was to Hypergenesis. Could not draw removal to win the game and was a very tough match."

"I wanted to go Uw instead of Mono U to have use of the Sejiri Merfolk and Sygg, River Guide. I was expecting Goblins so I included Galina's Knight in the main deck but never played a game against Goblins today. This deck is very fast and fun to run and I am sure with some tweaking this deck would be very hard to beat. I will be working on it to use next season. GG's to all, thanks for the fun matches today."

And the winner of all the marbles...

Nagarjuna has been the most involved person besides myself in Heirloom flat out and his perseverance and contributions made his win of the season finals that much more appropriate.

1st    Nagarjuna

"At first  I would like to thank Xaos for another great event and an awesome first heirloom season! Heirloom is the best experience related to magic I ever had since 1994 when I started playing it!!!"

"The plan for today was to bring a WW deck with a lot of gobo-hate in the sideboard. A testgame right before the event showed me that it was bad against gobos even with hate! So I dropped it and brought another version of my Hypergenesis build. I expected gobos and some hate in the event, so it was a fine choice!"

Final Standings:

1st Nagarjuna    4-0

2nd ChrisMH77  3-1
3rd mrjebus27   3-1
4th SilvaDuarth  3-1

I gave out nearly double prizes for this event (including 12 tix to first) to celebrate the end of season "Zero". Wouldn't you know it Nagarjuna donated his 12 tix back to the Heirloom prize pool. Nagarjuna is clearly a winner in many senses of the word. I'm grateful to everyone who has shared this format with me since I started it. This is nothing but a fool's idea without everyone who has shown up to make it real. Thanks to all of you guys.

The sealed league is in full swing. I got a pretty good pool from Flippers_Giraffe. Here's what I got and how I built my maindeck, I put extra basics in my sideboard for games two and three in case I wanted to switch things up. I also went ahead and built alternate versions for quick sideboarding. Usually I didn't change up the deck much from the main other than to bring in my anti-red hate now and again.

I think I did pretty well the first week winning 11/14 of my matches. Since there are far too many winning matches to review I'll just talk about the ones I lost. Which were to Rah, ClericCadderly and Bliven 731.

I lost the games to Bliv from a couple of different angles. One match was an attrition loss, he had more threats/answers than I had and in the other game Obelisk of Alara spelled doom for me. Bliv plays a pretty tight game so I'd be keeping my mind focused when playing him to avoid losing by tiny degrees.

Rah's deck was pretty fast and threat dense. I found it hard to gain control of the board against him. In some games I think I should have saved my removal for bigger problems and in another Farsight Mask just stopped me in my tracks.

ClericCadderly went for a very aggressive angle of attack with a consistent manabase. In the end it was enough to overcome my control and Algae Gharial was an especially problematic card for me.

Here are the results for week one of the league. Remember you can join the league at any time just let me know in the main event thread and I or Nagarjuna will generate a pool for you as soon as we can to bring you up to speed.

1st    18/29 wins SilvaDuarte   for 6 credits

2nd   16/23 wins mupps84  for 4 credits

3rd   13/19 wins drbenwayy  for 4 credits

4th   11/14 wins and winning the tiebreaker Niabock  for 4 credits

5th   11/14 wins Xaoslegend
6th   11/19 wins avicenna
7th   11/23 wins Nagarjuna
8th   10/12 wins victorBike
9th   10/21 wins caterpillar_69
10th  9/17 wins Bliven731
11th  6/8 wins Clericcadderly
12th  6/9 wins Lozarian
13th  6/9 wins Aircadet44e
14th  6/11 wins apparentbliss
15th  6/12 wins Thisismich
16th  5/8 wins DaveLombardoJr
17th  5/8 wins DaveLombardoJr
18th  4/6 wins xecho
19th  4/10 wins Jarunik

And that's just the players with 4 or more wins . We had a large proportion of the registered players play 3 matches or more and post their results with only about 5/45 initial registrants thinking twice and opting out of playing matches as far as I can tell.

Winner of the prize for most matches outside of the top 4 was Nagarjuna with 23 matches for a prize of 4 credits (donated to the next week's prizes ).

Winner of the door prize Aircadet44e of 3 credits.

Everyone that played 3 matches or more week one is entitled to 2 foils from our pool of foils, see me or Nagarjuna for them.

Well I'm sure I missed plenty of the action and barely glossed over it's content but even the tip of this iceberg is humongous. Next article I'll talk about who won 17 tix at the following event .

Hmm just got a clarification from Flippers_Giraffe that the combo event is to be the month after, could use a throwback to revise this before it goes live.

Sorry about that,

Great article as always!

Can I get my Planswalker in foil please :-)

The first season of Heirloom constructed was a blast and the second one brought up a lot of great new decks! The Sealed League is far beyond anything i experienced in limited before! I played 64 matches in 4 weeks so far with a card pool for 2 tix and won more than 10 tix! Thinking about the upcomming possibilites to play limited with different pools (standard, block...) I can't wait for it!

Note: The abstract of the article still says that the combo event runs for the /12/25/2010

Tribal events are also 60 min a round in total, I missunderstood the formulation about it at first too.

In Re getting your article back after submitting, you can email Josh directly at joshua.claytor@gmail.com. Also you can use the text box in the Workflow area. Though I don't know how much more effective that is.

Congratulations Nagarjuna! A more worthy person is hard to think of. You certainly have come quite far with the hypergenesis deck. Glad to see you stuck with it.

Thanks for the good article. One point though: Could you please try to increase the quality of the screenshots next time? It is a bit hard to decipher.

I am really looking forward to the next season and constructed tournaments.

Sorry about that Jarunik, I guess the Snip-It tool that comes on my comp is a bit limited in usefulness, I'll certianly take a look at other options for the next one.

Wow, so I won the Heirloom Media Contributor award! Thank you!

Also I'm very happy that Naga won the season zero finale. Not only because he spent so much time perfecting that deck and finally managed to turn it into a Tier-1 deck, but also because he really is a staunch defender of the format and dedicates a lot of time and energy to it. So it was a much deserved win.

And great read as always!

Let me start off by saying thank you for the great honor of becoming the newest Heirloom Godfather! It was a totally unexpected and welcome surprise :)

I think the sideboard for my Merfolk deck is actually Nagarjuna's Hypergenesis 2.0 sideboard. My sideboard was this :

4 Celestial Purge
4 Flashfreeze
3 Unsummon
1 Hibernation
3 Spell Pierce

Thanks again and I can't wait until tomorrow!
