 Of Peasants and Paupers

Hello all, Welcome back.  Happy 4th of July since I am not sure when this article will go up I figured better to say it now.  This week we saw the return of goblins to the mix.  The little buggers were blowing themselves up through the rounds this week.  Aggro is just hard to beat and since goblins had been slowing down a fair number of decks had been siding out their goblin hate in favor of a more divers sideboard.

Looking forward though I want to tell everyone that season points are starting to add up and as a bonus this season I will be giving a pack of M14 to the Player with the highest season points score this season.   The Championships are going to be on July 28th so that means you have 3 events left to get your points on. For those who are interested they can check out the points here.

The Decks

This week the top two decks are decks that have both been featured before so I thought to give a little more in depth conversation on the decks as they pertain to Peasant.

1st by sadisteck in Peasant 12.07 (4-0-1)
4 Goblin Arsonist
4 Goblin Bushwhacker
4 Goblin Cohort
4 Goblin Sledder
4 Jackal Familiar
4 Mogg Flunkies
4 Mogg War Marshal
2 Mogg Raider
1 goblin wardriver
31 cards

Other Spells
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Death Spark
1 Fireblast
4 goblin grenade
12 cards
17 Mountain
17 cards

goblin wardriver

Sadisteck is known for this deck he loves running it and he runs it well.  This deck uses 22 one drop creatures and  9 two drop creatures to keep up a constant pressure. Most of these creatures are Common and part of the Classic Pauper deck.  There is one creature that is Uncommon

  • Goblin Wardriver Frankly I would play more of this guy he demands to be answered and if you turn 4 him + (Goblin Bushwacker) it is just a great feeling to resolve.  as a two drop he has no curve issues and is even a goblin for Goblin Grenade

Now spells are pretty easy to understand for this deck Lightning Bolt has been the best red one cost spell since it was made.  Death Spark nearly always returns to your hand and Fireblast can just finish games with free reach. There is a special card though that is a bit unique to Peasant.

  • Goblin Grenade This bad puppy is Common in paper thanks to fallen empires so it is common for Peasant.   5 damage for 1 mana is just what this deck wants and by turn 4-5 you usually have creatures you either want to sacrifice or can't attack with anyway.  I also love this card in the Kuldotha tokens deck but that is for another review.

The truth is this deck doesn't really need 4 other Uncommons to run but there are a good number of one shots that make a great impact in the Sideboard.

  • Pyroclasm This card is both great and horrible.  It can wipe your own board but it also has the ability to wipe your opponent off the field.  The use of sacrifice goblins however does make this card a little more manageable.
  • Flames of the Blood Hand this card won sadisteck his spot in the finals and it is a good card however I think Skullcrack is just a better version for 1 less mana. But hey sadisteck has been out of the loop for a bit so we will not hold that against him.
  • Price of progress This is a good amount of reach against post decks not to mention affinity.  I wonder though if this card should have 2-3 copies instead of 1 but who am I to questions what works.
  • Blood Knight  I know White Weenie can be harsh against goblins but I cannot help but feel this card is a little too specific to make a good one copy.  Maybe it is just because I haven't seen much WW in a while.

Well that is pretty much all I can say about his deck.  It is a good deck it has a plan and it sticks to it.  Now on to 2nd place.

Delver of Bolas
2nd by Malum in Peasant 12.07 (4-1)
4 Ninja of the Deep Hours
4 Spellstutter Sprite
3 Faerie Impostor
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Cloud of Faeries
4 Spire Golem
23 cards

Other Spells
2 Piracy Charm
1 Mizzium Skin
1 Oona's Grace
2 Preordain
4 Counterspell
3 Ponder
4 Snap
2 Snakeform
19 cards
16 Island
16 cards

Augur of Bolas

I admit it this is the same deck I have been running for a while now.  I love Delver Blue, it was a pet deck that came together when delver first hit the scene.  The deck is simple drop and early threat and control the game till you win.  When the deck comes together it can be a nightmare to face.  It can also flop over and die on a mull or run dry never hitting a 2nd land drop.  What makes this deck different from Classic Pauper Delver is simple higher grade creatures.

  • Augur of Bolas This Mer monster is a 2 mana Sea Gate Oracle in this deck.  He draws you a card 70% of the time and blocks goblins like a champ.
  • Faerie Impostor A one mana 2/1 flyer that lets you recast all your ETB creatures or keep your Ninja of the Deep Hours in the air is just very versatile, of course against goblins she is not so good.  She trades badly and against the red menace she is just a Death Spark away from a bad double block.

Now Delver and Goblins both have a bit of an ace in the hole for Peasant.

red elemental blast blue elemental blast

These two cards are much more affordable compared to Pyroblast and Hydroblast however they have been printed at common so they do not count in your 5 uncommon limit. Cost effective hate cards got to love a good deal.

Mono colored still seems pretty good as it took 3 places in the top 4.  I cannot stress though how you need to be prepared for a bit of everything in Peasant.  You might face 3 people and see the same deck 3 times you might never see a repeat.  Looking back though we are seeing a shift towards the red aggressive decks, so grab your removal if you can and hold on tight for a burning red summer.

The Wrap Up

Well I have featured a good number of cards so far many that help already established Pauper decks, and a few cards that can be built around.  This weak I give one that can help any deck that runs its color.

Skeletal Scrying

This card in MBC can dig for Corrupts, in Dimir trinket it refills your hand, and in Cloudpost it is searchable with Mystical Teachings.  Instant speed card draw with and X in the casting cost is just very over powered I hope you all enjoy abusing it.
