 Of Peasants and Paupers

Hello all, Welcome back.  The Season 11 Championships took place May 5th, Cinco De Mayo, also fun fact my oldest boys Birthday.  The event was a good deal of fun and the bye system allowed anyone and everyone to play while still rewarding players who did well during the season.

Normally a good number of events take a little break during the prerelease time to let people play and get the new cards.  Sunday Peasant is not taking a break so May 12th Mothers-day we will be having our event with extra Prizes give to start off Season 12.  What are those prizes?  Well we are still working on that.  though we should have enough Prizes that everyone will get something.

Now if you want to show up for this event I recommend taking a look at the recap.

The Decks

This time around being championships I wanted to showcase the top 4 and the great thing about this top 4 is there are no duplicates.  In fact if you go look at the full top 8 you still do not see any exact copies of decks.  To me this shows the diversity of Peasant and a healthy meta.

Mono Black this deck has always been a top tier deck in Peasant and this season it took the gold on more than one occasion.  So it is no surprise that it was able to once again take the top spot.  I like Beaubafett's build for this deck and I think that is because I am a fan of having a toolbox.  However the uncommon tool:

  • Vampire Nighthawk. The one stop shop of creatures for black. I have talked about this guy before and my opinion has not changed.  Flying, lifelink, Deathtouch, and 2/3 for 1BB, as far as creatures go there is nothing more black could ask for an uncommon.

This deck is the brain child of pk23, it combines land destruction with acceleration, it mixes big beefy creatures with direct damage to the dome, and just for fun you get more mana ramp life gain and tokens just from the land.

  • Firespout This is the decks answer to many things it can power through hexproof and 3 damage is more than enough to take care of most of the creatures in the format.

  • Urza's Factory Tokens, tokens everywhere.  This gives great inevitability in the late game.  Although this deck already has a great late game, this is un-counterable and cannot be dealt with most removal decks run.

I do love this deck so much I pray that Mercadian Masques comes back to draft every Wednesday so the prices will drop.  I will stop crying now I promise.  In Peasant this decks main problem comes in the form of MBC and Stompy.  However the uncommons this deck can bring to the table help offset that.

  • Augur of Bolas Is it just me or does Nicol Bolas hire the best employees.  This guy blocks and replaces himself most of the time since 1 out of 3 cards in your deck is an instant or sorcery.  I covered this once before in depth so I will give the quick play. 3 Toughness gives a nice buffer against stompy, and the 2/2's of MBC.
  • Mental Misstep I like this card a lot, 1 CMC hits a great deal of cards in Pauper and 2 life is a small cost to pay for stopping a Nettle Sentinel or Goblin Grenade.

I think this Championships very much was a best of event, and that would not be complete without Stompy.  However in Peasant Stompy gets an aggressive and powerful card.

  • Strangleroot Geist This guy is a beast well he is a spirit but you get the idea.  Aggressive and Undying he was made for Stompy and is a very easy 4 of in this deck.

 The Wrap Up

The Championships are over and a new set is on the Horizon.  I was debating on doing a set review of the uncommons of Dragon's Maze but let's be honest, there are Reviews everywhere at this point.  Also they are done by people who are much better at this game then I am so I will not even try to compete and make myself look foolish....

However I will comment on the uncommons I think can make waves:

Blast of Genius

This card is expensive and seems like it would be to slow for most decks however I fear getting hit by this from Izzet Post.  Worse I can already feel the 4 damage from them discarding Mystical Teachings.  Card draw and damage I expect to see this card making its way into PEZ Post decks.

  Carnage Gladiator

This card is not as easy of a fit as the last as we have yet to see a strong Rakdos deck in pauper.  Though the effects this guy brings to the table might just be worth building around.  Say with a deck that already wants a good deal of lands and plays a ton of fetches.

 Far & Away

The Fuse cards are interesting but i do not see them as being strong enough to build around however this one does fit nicely into Dimir decks a (Diabolical Edict) and an Unsummon effect on one card easily deserves a spot.

Gruul War Chant

If this card was mono Green I would seriously consider it for the Watch or even Banned list.  As it being 2RG I am going to wait and see if the Horned Kavu deck is a thing...

Well time to start getting out there and brewing while Izzet and Dimir seem to have made out like bandits who knows what new builds this set will bring to us.
