Hello Everyone and Welcome to

The Rogue Side 1

I've been in and out of MTGO for the past couple of weeks due to the intense working schedule I have now (Working from 6:30am to 9:30pm). But I finally got to squeeze in some MTGO time so here I am now. I have a few things I would like to mention before I continue the article.

1. The Rogue Side: I've always written with the title, The Rogue Side of Pauper. But I've decided to start branching out into the different formats online. I won't be showing only pauper decks/brews anymore but as well as modern and standard.

2. I might also be posting decks I do make. But be warned, I am not a good deck builder. I'm no David Shaffer or Jphsnake.

3. If any person has any brews that want some love please do email me at kevinjacalanbono@gmail.com. I am more than willing to talk to you about them and would love to show them in the articles.

This article was supposed to be released a few weeks back (more than a month now) but I was so busy because of work and personal reasons. Sure, I got time to play some matches with my other decks (i.e. Elves) but not really with the deck I would like to show everyone today. In my past articles I have always mentioned the player Jphsnake and his brews. I mentioned to you the Suicide White Deck. Dan, for one, loves Jphsnake’s Deck, Beast Down. But that’s not the deck I want to talk about. It started out as a friendly conversation with Jphsnake. I asked him if I could possibly take one of his brews to show in the article. This is what he said to me:

“Sure thing, I have lots of very strange ideas for decks, but I am unable to play magic for at least 3 weeks because I am quite busy with other obligations (aka work). My current brew beasts, is being tested by Dan right now. However, you are free to test one of my latest brews that I don't have time to play. It is quite skill intensive to play but it is also very explosive for a control deck. It is essentially a Mono-Red snow-based control deck that splashes all the other colors. The hidden interaction here is Springleaf drum, play elemental for evoke, tap elemental for mana w/drum, and undying evil/cloudshift. The evil and shift can also be used to save your Smoke braider.”

I present to everyone, Icy Hot Hottie:

This is a link of the video deck tech I made more than a month ago:

Jphsnake categorize the cards as follows:

Springleaf DrumSmokebraider

cshift uevil

Card Advantage:

fgrinder mdrifter mwhelk wgrove

This is the sideboard option Jphsnake made against the meta.

Affinity: -2 Faultgrinder, -3 Mournwhelk, +4 Ingot Chewer, +1 Ghostly Flicker

Stompy/Goblins: -2 Faultgrinder, -3 Mournwhelk, +3 Martyr of Ashes, +2 Lightning Bolt

Fissurepost/Fam-Storm: -4 Flame Slash, -2 Walker of the Grove, -2 Skred,  +4 Pyroblast, +2 Faultgrinder, +2 Ingot Chewer

Izzetpost: -4 Flame Slash, -2 Skred, +2 Faultgrinder, +4 Pyroblast

Delver/ Delverfiend: -2 Faultgrinder, -2 Walker of the Grove, -2 Cloudshift  +2 Lightning Bolt, +4 Pyroblast

Elves/ WW: -2 Faultgrinder, -3 Mournwhelk, +2 Lightning Bolt, +3 Martyr of Ashes

MBC/Trinket: -2 Flame Slash, +2 Faultgrinder   I also asked him about what hands to keep and when to do mulligans. This is what he said: “Mulligans are a little tricky. If you don't know what your opponent is doing, you should keep removal hands or ramp hands, or any hand with Mulldrifter and the mana to cast and/or evoke it. You should always Evoke your guys but usually try hardcasting mulldrifter. You can later save the drifter or use the combo piece on another guy. But yeah, consistency is an issue for the deck. I'll try to think of a way to help it be more consistent”

Deck Cost: I’ve been thinking of adding a deck cost for those players who would want to try this out. This is the total cost of the deck as per MTGOTraders:

Deck Cost

With regards to the cost, the most expensive card in the deck is the 4x Pyroblast in the sideboard. But everything else is relatively cheap.

Icy Hot Hottie vs UB Trinket Control

Icy Hot Hottie vs Beast Down

Icy Hot Hottie vs Rot Wolf Control

Dan plays the deck:

Pauper Gauntlet Match: Icy Hot Hottie vs Simic Stormpost

Icy Hot Hottie vs Stompy

This deck is so skill intensive. I mean you have to make good decisions or you waste a turn or make a move that would've cost you the game. The main problem I've seen in the deck is the either too much mana or too little of it. Well that's Magic. But maybe if we can tweak this deck a bit more and probably add in card draws, it might fix the consistency issue. But what do I know. Other than that, this deck is very fun to play. Problem matches are against decks with heavy removal and fissure decks. But what deck can beat all right? Before I end the article, Here are the Young Pyromancer decks I've been playing around with both in standard and in modern. Since my budget is pretty limited and I only have so much time, I couldn't develop a good sideboard or even buy the necessary mana these both decks need to function properly but it is still pretty fun to play with.

That's is all for now guys and I hope you had a good read. I hope I can get back to playing Magic and writing more articles.

Thank you!

Great feature for the deck! I will link to this instead of the old link for the Pauper Gauntlet. Icy Hot Hottie won the voteback and is now back in the Gauntlet.
