Yo Quiero Taco Bell

Another cold, cold Satyrday afternoon. GP Denver is happening, and I should be watching. It's a Standard Grand Prix, and I seem to playing Standard about half the time. I should watch and learn. But I'm having lag issues, and a cute girl winked at me from across the Twitterverse, and now I'm off in some weird how-do-you-do hormone driven I don't know what. But I'm not watching.

You know that in a previous life I was healthily and happily married, with 2 fine boys, a house, dogs, cats, and yeah. I was no saint prior to that, either. Well, I did help various people call on various deities, but I don't think that qualifies as sainthood. Anyway, in my ideal world, the US gov't intervention in my life for no good reason would never have happened, I'd still be living that life, and I would never have discovered Magic (unless my younger boy introduced me to it) (the older boy wouldn't, he's a sk8er boi), and, as a result of not knowing Magic, I wouldn't know any of you.

Realitas est
Veritas est

This is my real, unideal world. But one of the bright things in my world is Magic, and you. You people are my ersatz family, and I've come to love all of you. Each and every one. Yes I do, in some weird way. I even love the [REDACTED]s amongst you, like I (still) love my idiot ex-half-brother-in-law. Psychologists would probably call that weird something transference. Some of you are close, like brothers and sisters. Others are distant cousins I only see once in a while. Most of you are like nieces and nephews. Mainly 'cuz I'm old. And some of you... well... you know. *waggles eyebrows*

Yes, I do need help. But that's not why I'm here today. Why am I here today? I'm not sure. I'm trying to think of a good metaphor, saying, analogy, whatever, for a scenario where something (catastrophic) happens that no one expects, but no one is terribly surprised when it happens.

Like Y2K15.

I ended my year with a trip to wonderland, so my perceptions of that evening are a bit... fuzzy. As we were taxiing to the runway for takeoff, reports started coming from the far east of people getting kicked off of MTGO as the year switched to 2015.

As 2015 marched across the time zones, more and more folks were getting kicked off.  By the time the third wave of mass disconnects happened, I was nowhere near a laptop. (Nor would I have been able to use it) So I cannot tell you how the evening went in the MTGO world.

There was an easy workaround of setting your calendar to an earlier date, I saw mention of that before I left.

So it would appear that the folks over at the Ivory Tower had their own New Year's extravaganza, with cookies and milk, and they got it done just in time.

The New Year came, MTGO came back online, and all was right with the world.

Until the next time when something out of left field causes the whole house of cards to collapse again.

At last night's Friday Night Magic (January 2), the TO was unable to log into WER. With this one, I don't know if it's because the folks at the store changed the password, or because the DCI site was having issues. Being the Negative Nelly I am, and given WotC's track record with all things online, I tend to think the latter. After all, whenever I look at my Planeswalker Points, I see:

Dunno what's up there. I ask, but no one's ever answered.

And ya know what? Despite all the years and tears, I still harbor hope and love for MTGO. I really do. Dunno if this is Stockholm Syndrome or some other weird, twisted psychopathic flaw in my psyche. I know something else weird is going to happen; I know it. I won't be surprised when it does. But I'm still expecting to come back from some future downtime and find the one. The one that says it's all ok now, come play.

A guy can dream.

Overdrive!, which started on July 4th, 2011, is the original Modern format Player-Run Event! In fact, Overdrive! is even older than Modern, having started out as an event in the Overextended format. Overdrive! is a single elimination event: two men enter, one man leaves. Registration is done via Gatherling. You can find more information at the main event thread here

Overdrive! #165
Players: 8
Champion: drinkard / Burning Zoo
Runner up: pierakor / Ub Tron
Decklists and results from all Overdrive! events can be found here.

First timer drinkard brought this fiery Zoo build to the party, and showed Kiki Pod, RDW Burn, and U Tron how it's done! I love it when a first timer comes out on top!

pierakor switched back to U Tron, with a touch of black, and put the hurt to Thundercats and Elemental Combo before falling to Burning Zoo.

He also streamed his event, but I couldn't steal the video/embed the player without it auto-starting. But you can catch it here.

Bad Moon Rising #7: Last Dance?

Joe Dirt is a janitor with a mullet hairdo, acid-washed jeans and a dream to find the parents that he lost at the Grand Canyon when he was a belligerent, trailer park-raised eight-year-old. Now, blasting Van Halen in his jacked-up economy car, the irrepressibly optimistic Joe hits the road alone in search of his folks. As his wandering, misguided search takes him from one hilarious misadventure to another, Joe finds his way to Los Angeles, where a shock-jock brings Joe on his radio show to insult him. But as Joe's life story unfolds, jeers turn to cheers, and an entire captivated city tunes in to hear the adventures of Joe Dirt.

I stole that from iMDB.

So. This adventure is in limbo. I received an email today from the good folks at WotC, that this was the last Bad Moon Rising they'd be supplying boosters for.

Can't say I blame them.

When I put Bad Moon Rising together, I had big hopes of it becoming the place to play MTGO Vintage. The P9 had just come online: Power was now a thing on MTGO. Vintage players were screaming about having no place to play with their new toys, and having to play for Magic 2015 boosters when they could play.

I sweet talked WotC into supplying a dozen VMA boosters a month, too keep the goodies flowing into the system. Dojo Trade kind of fell into my lap, serendipity in action. The rest, as they say, is history.

What did you guys (referring to you online Vintage players) do? Stay away in droves. 12, 16, 12, 16, 19, 11. and 12. Those are our numbers to date. I can't keep selling this, and would be very surprised if Dojo wants to keep going. I'm still waiting to hear back from them; I'll keep the lights on as long as they're willing to pay the power. Poor pun intended.

Otto Traversing The Stairs

When Otto goes down the stairs
Otto runs from side to side
Poor Otto going down the stairs
Stumpy Otto cannot glide
Little legs carry Otto only so
Gravity dictates how Otto goes
Go too far, and over goes Otto
Experience teaches, and Otto knows
When traversing Otto goes down best
Zagging down Otto fearlessly goes
Little Otto, a vision of jest
Otto at bottom of stairs

Fire Dance

Flames crackle and dance
My thoughts turn to romance
And your sweet eyes crinkling
As I close in, thinking
To steal a kiss

First Snow

— Round Side Down —

The voice in my head tells me:
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down
It’s not my voice
Whispering behind thoughts
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down
It comes again
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down
Hunger rumbles in my soul
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down
Relentlessly it urges
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down
Grab some slices of raisin bread
Put the toast in the toaster; round side down

I give in
I put the slices in the toaster
Round side down
My mind whirls as I wait
Smelling the bread begin to brown
Raisins becoming moist bombs
It comes out
Butter is applied
Cinnamon and sugar, too
I bite
It tastes the same

— Segue Tryptich —

Sweet warm crunchiness
Delicious hot explosions
Damn I make good toast!

My jacket comes on
Go outside to smoke after
Air biting crisply

I cough to get off
And feel a tiny cold pinprick
Brush my face gently

— First Snow —

My eyes rose wondrously to the night
And in my flickering circle of light
Fairies danced silently

Miniscule dancers in mad tarantella
Drifting in breezes being blown helter skelter
Fairies danced silently

I exhale a cloud into their midst
And watch some die and turn to mist
Quickly the void begins to fill
As more fairies come until
Fairies danced silently

Many die upon my cheek
My eyes mist up, begin to leak
Damn this is some mighty fine weed
I rub my eyes and look again to see
Fairies danced silently

— Round Side Down, Again —

The voice is back
Cut off the neighbor’s head!
Put it in the freezer; round side down!

Maybe you can host a monthly WAFTT instead of Bad Moon Rising or even better weekly WAFTT.

I'm on board for this! A return to WAFTT, or even a once monthly big WAFFT would be great for a weekend event.

I would like to see more vintage events. I only heard about Sunday's event due to a friend of mine. I don't typically follow the PRE scene anymore since events don't fall into what I play.

I feel like if word was spread around a little more that we'd have a larger turnout. We can manage to fire the DEs on the weekends pretty consistently, so I would think that many of those players would be interested in playing if they knew about it and the times were decent. They may, however, fall into the same category as me in not knowing these events exist. Biggest complaint I have right now is that the DEs pay out in the newest sets instead of something pertaining to the format you're playing in.

Also I know Legacy is a lot more popular than Vintage is right now so possibly consider doing something for that format instead. I don't see much outside of standard/modern and the niche formats.

As far as advertising events, Classic Quarter might be a good place to start for the eternal formats. Just something to think about.

If you want to get in touch with me in game, just shoot me a PM. I'm almost always on in the evenings.
