Here is the Innistrad rankings based on price.

1)

Is there any question why this would be #1? This is one of the best planeswalkers ever made (that won't get banned). It is only 3 mana, which in classic can be cast first turn using a Dark Ritual.  Just saying people. But it makes people discard, gets around creatures with hexproof and protection from Black. This once again makes the mono-black deck viable again  Oh and it has a really nasty version of Fact of Fiction. If there was a broken card out there, I would have to say its name is Lilliana.

2)

Wow. just wow. If you already weren't annoyed by Splinter Twin, well here is it's ugly little cousin. With the new U/R mana this card is beyond broken in any format. This card may be banned in some formats, and this is why Nihil Spellbomb needs to be in EVERY-SINGLE-SIDEBOARD.

3)

I'm not a huge fan of this card. I mean what, you can deal 3 points of damage to a creature, and then turn it over? I think it's low casting cost and only 1 forest (which makes it splashable) isn't good enough for it's abilities. I do like the ability to poop out 2/2 creatures. But I think Garruk (M12) is a much better card. I don't know, I think this planeswalker is a little overrated.

4)

This is one of those cards that makes you go "This card is the bee's knees!". But then you think about it and it's a good card, but not a great card. Sure it can avoid counterspells, but it doesn't have Hexproof, and therefor even if you can get it into your graveyard early enough to cast it by turn 3, it would get killed by Go for the Throat or Doom Blade. It does have that "late game" potential, but I see the current blue decks not being creature intensive. I mean are you going to take out counterspells in return for Merfork Looter and more creature cards? Are the Illusion Bears going to come back with a vengeance? I think this card is much better in other formats like Modern or Classic instead of Standard. And once again, NIHIL SPELLBOMB!!!!!

5)

Love, love, love, love this card. We might need to get a Motel room. It's only 3 mana? Oh god. This is scary. First off, if you get this in a draft, you win. But this is one of the best cards I have seen in a long time. It may be personal preference, but if they never made Lilliana, this would by my personal #1 pick. I doubt there will be a "Tier 1" STD deck without this. Oh and btw, it can be returned from the graveyard by Sun Titan.

6)

Next up, price wise, is the lands. They will be in high demand early, and opening these up in the pre-release will make you some nice coin. Honestly, I think the W/B one if the most valuable. It allows you to play the deck I see as being played a ton, the U/W/B deck. The W/B land allows you to have play the deck with the most mana available for all three variations.

My personal favorite is the Black Green because I love green and think Black Green has a place in Standard.

7)

I don't know, I think this is another card that makes the "Modern" version of Splinter Twin even better. It is also another card that screams to me... NIHIL SPELLBOMB!!!!!!!!

8)

Well forget the whole "new Standard is a slower Standard". This is a good card, but it also has two things that could be useful. 1) You can get out non-black creatures faster, like, for example, titans. 2) The bigger the creature, the less the -1/-1 hurts you.

Turn 2) Heartless Summoning

Turn 3) Veridian Emissary x2

Turn 4) Grave Titan

That may not be the best way to get that card out, give me a better one please. But this card is not mono-black. It's a card that will make Titans even scarier. Not to mention the unknown titan, who is a titan but doesn't get called a titan. Wurmcoil Engine.

9)

Ok. I mean this isn't bad, but it's not even close to being the best gold card in the set. It's #3 after a card not even in the top 15 (price wise), which is the U/B creature that is a clone and can kill other creatures of the same name. Which is interesting if you can create a way to bounce it back to your hand.... Maybe Venser, the Soujourner, Phantasmal Image, or even Phyrexian Metamorph? That sounds a little scary to me.

10)

So let me get this straight. For 4 mana, you can have this in a W/G deck and play with Garruk (M12) and Elspeth Tirel, and you can make a whole lot of tokens? That sounds pretty cool to me. Not to mention you can put this in a deck with the creature that makes a 4/4 flyer when it attacks, or what about Cemetary Reaper, Garruk (Innistrad), or put this in a R/G deck with Kuldotha Rebirth?

Honorable Mention.

And the award for worst rare and probably overrated:

So that is based on price. But that doesn't mean these are the best cards in the set. I have noticed a few cards they brought in, and one they brought back that I personally enjoy.

and my favorite reprint ever....  YAY!!!!!

So that's the price list, but we all know that prices don't always mean they are the best. Here is my first Innistrad deck.

4x Mana Leak Sideboard
2x Jace, Memory Adept
3x Dissipate  3x Spellskite
3x Dismember 3x Day of Judgment
4x Grave Titan 1x Plains
3x Lilliana of the Veil 2x Mindshreiker
3x Go for the Throat 4x Snapcaster Mage
2x Skaab Ruinator  2x Sword of War and Peace
2x Merfolk Looter
3x Invisible Stalker
3x Sword of Feast and Famine
3x Ponder
2x Geist of Saint Traft

Land
4x Nephalia Drownyard
3x Drowned Catacombs
3x Ghost Quarters
3x Glacial Fortress
1x Plains
4x Swamp
4x Islands

I know the deck isn't perfect, but it's the best I can think of off the cuff.

So, now that it is over, let me just say I actually watched Piranha 3-D using the 3D TV I begged my parents not to get me, and you know what? It wasn't a terrible movie. I thought it would be like a bad SyFy movie, but it wasn't bad.

And I would suggest you give the new song by Papoose a chance. It's called Pipe Bomb and in the song he samples C.M. Punk, which I find very badass.

And my top 5 cards ever?

5. Force of Will (Everyone seems to love it, so why not even though I think Pyroclasm is cooler)

4. Tolarian Academy (Some people weren't playing when Saga came out, but this card was BROKEN). When this card came out, it was a staple in every Tier 1 deck. Forget Jace the Mind Sculptor, this card was the ultimate card well before Planeswalkers even existed.

3. Gaea's Cradle. I love this card. Even though Tolarian Academy was the top card of it's day, Gaea's Cradle would be amazing if reprinted in Type 2, even though that could never happen because it would mean the end of Standard.

2. Undermine. Still my favorite counterspell of all time. Or in a tie with Dissipate.

1. Kobolds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing is better than a 0/1 red creature for (0) mana.

If given the chance, I bet you with today's cards, I could make a great Classic Kobolds deck.

Kobold Taskmaster, Kobold Drill Sergeant, Kobolds of Kher Keep, Crookshank Kobolds, and Crimson Kobolds.

Greatest cards (tribe) ever created. .

everyone is missing the best part of the article. Didn't he say last article he retired at 24 and then he casually mentions the 3d tv he "begged" his parents to not buy him? That my friends is baller status.

I know for sure that I will buy as many nihil spellbombs as I can, and hope against hope that I do not have thousands of Nihil spellbombs sitting on my mtgo account someday.

I feel as if I learned nothing from this article, it was all over the place, nihil spellbomb is mentioned too many times, and I feel insulted.

It's better than last time and I enjoy the trainwreck that the comments will inevitably become.

As a piece of contructive criticism (yell if you want, but w/e), you should take 10 minutes a few hours after you write to re-read your writing. You will find sections to trim/cut and sections to expand. Every time I don't do this, I end up with something dumb still in the article when it is published. For you, that would be the over-emphasis on Nihil Spellbomb (cut way back and maybe mention other, better GY hate) and Dissipate (Explain why you love it, talk about a "sweet dissipate story", etc to expand on it instead of just being like <3<3<3 Dissipate!!!!).

Have a good one and in the words of the Human Torch, "Flame on!"

The editor was going to write some things and I was going to re-do my articles. This wasn't supposed to be published as I'm working on how to make the articles better. This wasn't supposed to go up at all, it was just a test for putting up decklists and how to balance pictures and text.

I'm actually really mad this was published when I wrote another one that wasn't posted.

So I'm sorry about this. And I got the rankings based on pre-release prices.

Wow. Just wow. Um sorry. And I had drafts I was going to put up, etc.. This is really making me mad. Josh a.k.a JXClaytor, this wasn't supposed to be posted, especially when Heath said you were supposed to talk to me first.

And I submitted it because I thought that is how you talk in the editing page since this is the first time I have heard your voice. You don't like me, I get it. What I don't get is why you want to set me up like this over, and over.

It looks bad for you when Heath tells me one thing, which is saved, and then you say another. I mean he does own the site, and you are what? The editor? As in the person who is not supposed to set up his writers. Exactly.

So you got the constructive criticism about the article. I'll leave that alone.

I actually just want to address the way you respond to feedback. In my opinion, it is not a healthy way to engage anyone, let alone the editor and your readership. Your tone is constantly defensive and should not be. People (myself included) are genuinely trying to help you with the goal of making the content of this site readable and relevant.

So, my constructive feedback for you this week is to be conscious of your tone. You are doing speculation articles. This takes balls because predictions are hard to make and there are many variables that can come to pass that make any speculation completely off base. With this in mind, you have to be willing to be wrong and to hear it from people. Otherwise you are going to respond to every single comment like a cat that is feverishly trying to scratch its way out of being cornered by dogs.

I have never tried to be anything but constructive with everyone here. The only time I was flamed on this site for anything I said, it was from you. Reflect on this a little and consider toning down your defensiveness. That is all.

I am trying to help. Not that you asked for it, but I think you have potential once you lose the defensiveness and hubris.

I do wish you well, sir. Consider this quote from Mark Twain (since you like quotes): "It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt"

Alternate's picture

Well you are right, but I was hearing two different things from Josh and Heath and don't know which one is telling me the truth.

This article wasn't supposed to be published.

Josh, I am sorry about your kid, there is nothing to be said there.

All I wanted was the editor to show me how to make the article more "polished" or "professional". But after hearing what is going on with you, I could understand why you would be so busy. I am currently dealing with my mom needing eye surgery because she is going blind and my dad almost died twice in the past year.

I also received recent fusion surgery on my deck. I couldn't imagine having a kid.

But I didn't mean to submit this article. I wanted to put this article on the site for the editor to look at and critique. I said that in the notes, but I pressed submit thinking that the editor doesn't look at an article if it is in it's draft phase.

I wanted my articles to be critiqued because I want them to be more for this site because this site is completely different than others since people want less text and more pictures/video. But I don't know how to do much, like how to get a decklist on here, or how to get videos online. The input here is very, um.. Microsoft based, and I work only on Mac's.

I know the article is terrible. That's the point. I wanted to just get the whole text-to-media ratio correct, and I wanted to know where to put a decklist. If it should be in the front, middle, or end.

I am sorry to hear about all of the tumult in your life right now.

Mistakes are only mistakes if you don't learn from them. Otherwise, I call them "learning opportunities". Never stop learning. It helps to acknowledge your shortcomings in a given situation.

This article isn't really up by char49d at Thu, 09/22/2011 - 17:01
char49d's picture

This article isn't really up my alley, since I don't bother with much speculation, but I did read it. I found the explanations of cards lacking. Yes, I agree Liliana and Snapcaster Mage are gong to be extremely powerful, but you don't explain WHY they are powerful. If I were a potential speculator that was going to buy these cards based on your advice, I would want to know the reasons behind it.

They have also never banned an invitational card, and reprinted at least one of them (Meddling Mage) so I find it virtually impossible that Snapcaster would get banned.

The thing is that I'm still by Alternate at Thu, 09/22/2011 - 17:54
Alternate's picture

The thing is that I'm still not sure about the mechanics about the cards. I was just posting the top 10 based on price.

But if this card gives your cards flashback, that means that you can add it to a splinter twin deck and you don't have to worry about having your opponent kill your Exarch when you cast it, since you can use flashback to regain the counter spells you have used which means that your counter spell count goes from, lets say, 4, to 8. Also think of it's applications in a U/B control deck. You can get back your discard spells, your creature kill, or get back some counter spells.
And if added to Pyromancer Ascension, you now have the ability to activate it's ability with just one card to get counters on it faster and not have to worry about card draw as much.
There is also a card that allows you to draw and puts the rest of the cards seen in your graveyard, which means you can cast instants and sorceries without the worry of them being countered.

My decklist wasn't the best, but I definitely think the first deck you will see is U/B/W control, followed by B/G infect, U/R (which will take over for mono-red), and then maybe Mono-Black.

Flashback is actually by Paul Leicht at Thu, 09/22/2011 - 18:52
Paul Leicht's picture

Flashback is actually counter-intuitive to a Pyromancers deck since the enchant needs copies to be in the graveyard to activate it. For a long game card Snap Caster isn't particularly amazing though I do think it is perfectly OK.

Also RE: Media- I am of the opinion that videos are either very good or a waste of time/space. Keep writing. Don't worry about adding video unless you have some amazing games to show us. (Camtasia is highly recommended by those who do video recording for this site. I've never used it but apparently it is fairly easy to use.)

For the record, I didn't think much of the article but it was not by any stretch the worst this site has seen. Keep at it, and as I said before "if it doesn't apply let it fly." Show your NYer heart by rising above the hate.

As for Josh and Heath, while I respect Heath immensely, Josh is the man. He does this weekly and has done it well for quite a few years. I recommend cultivating a relationship with him via email etc where you can discuss with him the things you need to know to write successful articles here.

This is my fav column. I like to see the insane comment count it seems to get.
There are things that can be worked on.
1) numbers on prices
Right now, i can't tell how much the cards are worth by looking at the ranking. That doean't help me plan my innistrad purchases.
2) lack of insight when u say "based on prices"
Based on exp, i can say tt the lands are bad buys early and they will tank significantly after awhile.
If u could bring up why some prices are like they are, it would allow players to choose when to buy for value.

Personally, i find that successful speculation on mtgo is based on understanding formats well.
When i suggest cards to buy, they will bear fruit because i can quickly evaluate what the undervalued cards are with each big change.
It may not be a secret buy (that lets u catch the world off guard) but they will be good buys.
However, good buys don't have the time to turn into articles.

These are the pre-release by Alternate at Thu, 09/22/2011 - 23:16
Alternate's picture

These are the pre-release prices of the cards. It's pretty standard across the board, and you should already know that you sell everything you get during the pre-release.

I mean the last card I remember going up right after the pre-release was Tezzeret. But I don't even think Lilliana will go up right after. It will be around 20-30 on MTGO during the pre-release and then drop when it's released.

Now if Lilliana was blue..... Well we all know about people's love of Blue, which is my second least favorite color.

Oh and btw, these are the paper prices. Who knows what MTGO will look like. I do know Innistrad is a massive set, so the cards may not be as available and the prices might be higher than usual, but I don't know.

I don't set the prices.

I do know one thing. If you want to start speculating on Innistrad look for the cards that will be staples. Like how Spellskite was a staple and was selling for $4 at one time. And Consecrated Sphinx was 5.50. I mean those are staples, and that's the best way to do it.

The card that interests me the most is Garruk. Garruk is strange because I don't think it's that great. It will be worth a ton of money, but I would take the M12 Garruk over this double sided one. But the price might be really high on it for it's "new mechanic" look.

So does anyone know how the double sided cards will work yet online? Like will I be seeing cards in my opponents hand?

*Oh and just for fun, I want that 0/3 Blue Roc Egg That can become a 13/13. It's probably as terrible as Blightsteel Colossus was, but would be fun to try to build a deck around. Like proliferate or something.

Also considering pre-release by ShardFenix at Thu, 09/22/2011 - 23:54
ShardFenix's picture

Also considering pre-release prices it is always helpful to keep in mind that the largest paper sites also tend to have price floors for certain cards. Like new planeswalkers rarely go below 30.00 before the set is released because people will buy them at those prices early just to have them. So a lot of times its better to wait and hold off as to not get burned with paper cards in those instances. Like Garruak Primal Hunter may have been up to 35 and at least 30 before m12 dropped and has already gone down to 22.

No, people shouldn't know to sell everything they get during a pre-release this article is called Speculation 101 not Speculation 301.
That is exactly the sort of thing you should be trying to help your reader base with.
Not random rankings that have no rhyme or reason behind them other then some supposed pre sale price that you never share with the readers.

Honestly like many other readers the only Reasons i clicked on the article in the first place was
#1 This guy seriously got another article up after having the last one removed?
and #2 Lets go see the train wreck we know that's going to be the comments.

I'll close this comment with saying that yes the article is marginally better then your last two but just like the last two it delivered more entertainment value in the comments then the actual article.
My advice you to come up with a single focal point for your article elaborate on it the whole "who, what, where, why" and back up what you say in some way or another. adding a bit a fluff here or there is fine but make sure that it's all in some way relevant to the main body of the article.

Quit whining. If writing is such a chore, stop. Don't blame the editors if you are unable to write what you want. It is to your capability to convey your thoughts into writing and reach out to people. Accepting criticism is the most important factor to improve and not able to take it gives a negative feeling. Ask a friend to view your draft article before submitting it and improve what is lacking. We have more than capable writers here to help but you were so defensive about it which is a hinder to help. I received help on where to improve on my articles and try to improve on grammatical mistakes. Try to read articles on various websites and learn from them. Which author intrigues you? How does he portray himself to readers? What materials he use for his articles? You can start off by copying a favorite writer of yours and slowly blend in your personality to make it your own in time to come. Have less rage man, what good does it do??
