What I won't be doing in this article is brewing. Trust me I have plenty of thoughts and ideas for this new set but I would rather wait to see what some of the pros do before I dive into some of my weird ideas. What I will be doing is sharing certain cards that will fit into current decks that will improve them.

First up is one of my favorite cards from the set which should come as no surprise to anyone.

                                                                               Thalia_Heretic_Cathar

The most obvious place for this card is in the various Human decks. I could see this going in the WR Humans build as maybe a 2 of. Another 3 drop isn't exactly what the hyper aggressive deck wants but one that has your opponent's creatures come into play tapped is very good. It essentially takes away their blockers. There are also enough nonbasic lands in Standard to make her other ability relevant as well.

Another great place for her would be any of the Collected Company decks. If you hit her off of a Company hit in response to your opponent's Company it could be devastating. Her stats are also pretty good. The fact that she is now a 3/2 first striker really helps her survive combat against the multiple X/3 creatures that are in Standard like Reflector Mage, Sylvan Advocate, and Eldrazi Displacer

Next is another card that I think will fit nicely into WR Humans.

                                                                                Ride_Down

Though this will most likely be a sideboard card I think it is a great reprint. Often times the white deck gets stopped cold by creatures like Sylvan Advocate and Lambholt Pacifist. Even Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is a big problem and this card is great at stopping all of them. Ride Down saw some fringe play in the RW Tokens deck with Hordeling Outburst and Seeker of the Way in Standard past.

Next is something for the black players.

                                              Oath_of_Liliana    Murder

Both of these cards will be great additions to the B/X control decks. I for one will be testing them out in BW Control. Oath is fine just as a removal spell but her second ability can also shine in that deck. There are 8 planeswalkers in the deck's current version but if you the new version of Liliana in the board maybe you have the off chance of killing a creature than making a zombie of your own on your end step. Murder will definitely be used though I am not sure as to what the proper number will be yet. The fact that it is unconditional is nice so it may end up replacing Ultimate Price and a Ruinous Path or two. We will see what the removal needs to be depending on what creatures pop up in the most numbers.

Here is another card that I feel has some potential.

                                                                               Emrakuls_Evangel

Back at PT Shadows over Innistrad one of the break out decks was the BG Aristocrats deck that Team Channel Fireball played netting LSV another top 8 and other players some decent finishes.

4 Elvish Visionary

4 cards

4 Hissing Quagmire

Zulaport Cutthroat

The deck has been played since then but has not been one of the top decks in Standard. I think that may change. Evangel does a few things for the deck that can really speed up the Zulaport Cutthroat win condition. The fact that he is decently sized is fine enough but that is obviously not what makes him good. He is another creature that can be hit off of Collected Company which is an added bonus but then you read his text. You can pretty much sacrifice your whole board and get a bunch of 3/2 Eldrazi Horrors to replace each creature. So you can upgrade things like Blisterpod and Elvish Visionary and turn them into beaters. But wait there is more! You can also set up one shot kills with cutthroat by sacrificing your whole board and getting the tokens and then sacrificing those tokens. The best part is that Evangel is not the only card that excites me for the sacrifice deck. There are a couple others.

                                                   Decimator_of_the_Provinces   Distended_Mindbender

The Emerge mechanic in general seems very very strong. Though these two seem to be very strong in the black green aristocrats deck. The Decimator acts like a mini Craterhoof Behemoth and the Mindbender is an Inquisition of Kozilek mixed with a Appetite for Brains attached to a 5/5. There is a lot of value to be had in this deck and I for one am excited to see how this deck shapes up. I enjoyed playing it and really feel it can be one of the top decks going forward.

This next card will go in a few decks to be sure and I am amazed at its power level.

                                                                                 Spell_Queller

Even before this card Kevin Jones took a WU Aggro deck to a top 8 in a SCG Classic.

8 cards

Reflector Mage

Brian Demars posted on twitter that Reflector Mage punishes you for playing creatures that cost over 4 and Spell Queller punishes you for playing creatures under. I don't think UW will be too oppressive but it will definitely be very strong. There will be various ways to build it but rest assured that each version will have the mage and the queller. When Queller is paired with Rattlechains I believe there is a reason to be worried.  Another deck that will benefit from Spell Queller will be Bant Company. Not that Company needed any more help but it has it none the less. I even think Bant Spirits will be strong but more on that another time. So since Bant isn't going anywhere why not give it a planeswalker that fits its strategy.

                                                                                 Tamiyo_Field_Researcher

There are mixed opinions on Tamiyo and even in my local game store there is one guy who is adamant that she is not very good. Mainly for the fact that if she comes down on an empty board she is useless. Of course one way around that is not to play her on an empty board but I see his point. However I think she can be very good in the version of Bant Company that runs both Sylvan Advocate and Avacyn. Having creatures with vigilance makes her +1 ability very strong. I do wonder if her ultimate will happen very often but if it does it can totally change the game. Especially if there are flash creatures, Collected Companys and counterspells. I look forward to seeing how Tamiyo will be used but I still think the planeswalker can be very strong in the right deck.

                                                                                Cryptolith_Rite.jpg

There were various Cryptolith Rites decks these past few months and I really think that with some of the bigger creatures coming out that all of them will get better. I already mentioned some of the Emerge creatures. But this next one will fit in anyone of them as well.

                                                                               Elder_Deep_Fiend

This one seems great as well. I think it will most likely fit into a Sultai or Bant type Rites deck. Right now it is hard for me to determine which one of these Emerge cards are the strongest but time will tell.

There are a ton of other powerful cards in this set this was only a small sampling of things that plug into current decks. Eldritch Moon seems to be a very strong set and I really hope it helps to dethrone some of the Tier 1 decks in Standard. I think that some new decks will enter the top tier as well and I may spend some time studying the cards more to bring a few brews to you. In fact I already have some in the works.

One idea that I have and I know I am not the only one is taking humans from white/red to white/green. The reprinting of Hamlet Captain is one that really pushes that change in color. The fact that he anthems your team when he attacks and blocks is great. Then if you are going to have green there is no harm in having Dromoka's Command as well. It is possible that GW Humans makes a jump to the front and that is one place I will be starting my testing.  I hope this helped you a bit and I would love to hear some of your ideas for the future of Standard.

Until next time!
