State of the Program for April 15th, 2022
Streets of New Capenna: Previews are wrapping up for the set soon! You can find the preview schedule here. The card image gallery is here. The variant gallery is here. The mechanics of the set article is here.
Season 2 MOCS: Events for this season start in May and last through August. You can see the full qualifier schedule here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is
here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:
Ongoing - Masters 25 Flashback Draft
Upcoming Events on MTGO
April 16 - Vintage Showcase Qualifier
April 17 - Legacy Showcase Qualifier
April 20 - Kamigawa Remix
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard:
Legacy: Any time I see
Children of Korlis
in a Legacy deck, I automatically think it's Tin Fins, and then remember that that is a referrence to Sealab 2021. Honestly though, I think Tin Fins is just any Reanimator Storm Hybrid that is powered by
Griselbrand
. This seems to fit the bill.
Modern: This list is a bit weird to me. It looks like a combination of the classic Stoneblade deck and the Orzhov Flicker deck. It looks interesting for sure though.
Pauper: I've been playing a lot of Pauper recently, because I enjoy the Gruul Cascade deck. This deck existed before the
Disciple of the Vault
ban, and it felt better then. It's still around now, but uses
Jace's Erasure
as the win condition. I feel like this deck really wants some copies of
Moment's Peace
. Yeah they can gain a ton of life with
Weather the Storm
, but that life doesn't matter if they are still swinging for a ton and putting you under so much pressure.
Pioneer: Okay, this is really fun and creative and has taken Pioneer by storm for a bit this week. It's consistent, it's caused players to start running
Ray of Enfeeblement
as an answer to
Velomachus Lorehold
, and when it does its thing, it's hard for the opponent to come back. So you use cards like
Contingency Plan
to fill your grave, one of your Delve creatures,
Hooting Mandrills
or
Tasigur, the Golden Fang
to come in to play cheaply and then
Neoform
it to get the Lorehold Dragon in to play. It gets a counter which allows you to cast the 6 mana turn spells with its ability. You continue to attack and take extra turns and then the game is over.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Other Event Winners
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Lair of the Hydra
is new to list, and I am really said that we apparently never got the D&D module arts for the lands out of Forgotten Realms, nor does it appear that we got the rulebook styles either. Sad times. Those extra copies of cards would probably bring prices down a bit maybe?
Modern Staples: A lot of Modern Horizons 2 stuff is back on the list.
Eternal Staples:
Mox Opal
is back on the list. I forgot that was banned in Modern for a second.
Pioneer Staples:
Steam Vents
joins the list this week.
Valki, God of Lies
has fallen off. In it's place, but not really, is
Cavalier of Thorns
.
Kalitas, Traiter of Ghet
is back on and
Day's Undoing
, pushed heavily by Narset in a fun Izzet Control build has popped up this week.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $30,945. Last week it was $30,107. This is a gain of $838 dollars.
I played a lot of Magic this week, less Fortnite and just had a great week after spending the last week with my son. I also cut my hair. I was less better at that than I was at everything else this week.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
