State of the Program for April 1st, 2022
Organized Play: On Thursday, Wizards of the Coast announced the return of the Pro Tour! It looks like a mishmash of some of the old systems. It included Regional Championship Qualifier, Regional Championships, the Pro Tour, and Worlds. It does not appear to include Grand Prix anymore. You can qualifiy with MTGO play, and news about that will be out later in April. You can read the document for it here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: We're not used to combo decks in Standard winning as soon as turn 1 any more, and I thought we left that behind with the rotation of Urza's Block. However, they must have missed Exodia construct cards. Sure sometimes you draw your entire deck taking a long time to play a game by yourself but if this deck clicks it more than makes up for high rate of failure on turn 1. Also make sure you check out the winning animation when you get all of the Exodia cards in your hand! It's super cool!
Legacy: Simple enough, play tamers, control the board and finish them off with multiple attacks from the hybrids. A very powerful deck to be sure.
Modern: It appears that we're back to getting a new set and rotating Modern. Gengar V is a powerful attacker, knocking out a fair amount of creatures in it's path for three Dark Energy. Sure you put damage counters on it, but if you're drawing prize cards who really cares about that?
Pauper: Do you think a deck with Locke, Terra and Shiva, Lady of Frost is going to be bad? No way, put up those mountains, it's time for a new Ice Age!
Pioneer: Good ole Priest control, it's been gosh 9 years it feels like, since we last saw Priest play a part of the metagame, but thankfully, Pioneer has made sure the popular archetype has been reborn. Make sure you check out the hero of this deck, Xerandaal, Shade Servitor who has a nice bit of damage attached to their ability.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Standard seems to be really chill this week. It seems like it's in a good, fair place right now, but the previews to the new set are really charming!
Modern Staples: If you're playing tabletop Magic one of the promo cards for premier play is
Lava Spike
, it looks super good.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples: With the organized play announcement of Pioneer coming to the tabletop Pro Tour, I expect the cards and the format to beging to explode in popularity soon. The first round of Regional Championships is Pioneer, and the first Pro Tour will include the format as well.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $29,263. The number last week was $29,538. Another small loss, this time of $275.
This is the best version of this column that I think I have ever written.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
