State of the Program for April 22nd, 2022
Kamigawa Remix: The newest draft format on MTGO mixes the four Kamigawa sets together equally for a draft format. You can check out the overcharged pack contents and the card list here.
Price changes: Wizards of the Coast is raising prices on booster packs and bundles and Commnander product. The about 11% increase is being blammed on the cost of goods, transport and manufacturing. This comes on the heels of record breaking profit during the pandemic. This price change appears to be happening in July, and will effect Draft, Set, Collector and Jumpstart boosters, as well as bundles. You can read the full statement here.
Digital Premier Play: MTGO had slightly changed the path to the Pro Tour that one takes on the client. A lot of stuff is staying the same, the MOCS, qualifiers and super qualifiers are staying, challenges are too, and if you win a Showcase Qualifier, you qualify for the Pro Tour. The winner and runner-up of showcases will play in the World Championships, and Qualifiers and Super Qualifiers now offer invites to Regional Championships. More information is to come. You can see the info here.
CommandFest Return: Between June 3rd and July 30th, in celebration of Commander Legends: Baldur's Gate, there will be 15 CommandFests across the world! They only showed off these 15, so there is no word of these being it for the year or not. If you're in to paper Magic, you can get a sweet Sol Ring
and Path of Ancestry
promos. here is the info!
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: Before
Riverglide Pathway
blew up in prices thanks to Pioneer being the it thing on MTGO, this deck was a 35 dollar deck that was capable of a 5-0 finish in just about any league it was entered in. While 68 tickets are needed to buy the pathways, this isn't the worst option for someone looking for a good Standard deck.
Izzet Defiance: This deck is currently one of the hot new things in the Pioneer format. You get to play the role of a control deck and one that offers hand disruption between
Narset, Parter of Veils
and
Collective Defiance
. Sometimes this deck plays
Day's Undoing in that slot, but I think Defiance is better. They are both sorceries, but the flexibility of the Red spell allows it to kill a dork, and your turn doesn't end after it resolves.
Mono White Aggro: Keeping it in Pioneer this week, we look at a new mono white aggro deck. There hasn't really been one in the format so far, but
Elite Spellbinder
offers disruption and the Thalias in the deck slow your opponent down.
4 Color Vehicles: Vehicles are growing in the format, with Mardu being the most played, but the four color version takes great advantage of
Esika's Chariot
allowing you to keep the pressure up with either extra Cat or Angel tokens when it attacks.
Boros Hammer: For the most part I just looked at Pioneer this week, and while the format seems to be a three pronged on, with
Lotus Field
,
Winota, Joiner of Forces
and
Arclight Phoenix
being the main pillars, and
Lurrus of the Dream-Den
being the forth, but now it's not legal, it's somewhat of a brewer's paradise still. Eventually things might happen to the top three decks of the format, but until then it's neat seeing some impressive builds doing well in the format!
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Other Event Winners
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: We've got seven new cards on the list this week that undoubtedly being pushed by Pioneer play.
Witherbloom Command
came off the list.

Jace, the Mind Sculptor
fell back off the list this week.
Eternal Staples:
Academy Rector
is back on the list after a lengthy abscence.
Pioneer Staples:

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $30,700. Last time it was $30,945. This a $245 dollar loss. We'll regain that I am sure with the release of Streets of New Capenna next week!
This week I spent a ton of time on Fortnite making sure that I got the Prowler skin on my son and nephew's accounts. I also played at least 30 matches of Pioneer, and finally got the numbers I needed to list preorders at my other gig. It's been a productive week and I was pretty happy for most of it, which is a really nice feeling!
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
