State of the Program for April 24th, 2020

In the News

Gyruda Banned:  Last week Gyruda, Doom of Depths did not work through stuff like Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace.  It was banned then on MTGO.  This week, after a fix, Gyruda now works correctly.

Jump Start Pushed back:  The Keyforge like product, that is basically mashing two booster packs together and playing a game is getting pushed back to a July paper release. Arena will see the product on the 16th, and MTGO will get the new cards in Treasure Chests on the 25th of July.

Animated Series in Scripting Stage:  It's going to be a real long time until we see this on Netflix.  Joe Russo dropped that little nugget in an interview with Collider this week.  You can watch that here

Design a card:  For Make-a-Wish omaze and Wizards teamed up to hold an online raffle for the right to design a card in set.  Winner gets to play a top secret game with an unreleased product, a tour of Wizards headquarters, and a stay in a four star hotel.  I'm gonna enter this and create Stone Rain Mage, which is a 1/1 dork for 2R that has Shroud but also destroys a land when it comes in to play.  It has to have shroud so it can't be bounced and such.  It wouldn't be printed, but you can go here, and maybe your idea will be!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Companions are all over Magic right now, and Lurrus was the most played, mainly because Gyruda was banned for a bit.  I'll take a look at Lurrus decks this week, and Gyruda decks next week.

Standard
: Kicking off Lurrus week may be the best Lurrus deck in Standard right now, though it is a toss up, in my mind, between this, Orzhov Sac and strangely enough Selesnya Auras.  Okay, maybe the Auras deck isn't as great as I think it is, but wow maindeck Hushbringer in it makes for some great games against a lot of decks in the format.

Legacy:  Lurrus shows up in Legacy, to buy back Delver of Secrets, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Meddling Mage or Mishra's Bauble.  Having access to more than two copies of Tormod's Crypt in post board games feels really important as well.

Modern: Think Lurrus is to slow for Modern?  Think again!  Burn decks are even using the nightmare cat, to give the deck incredible reach by reusing Mishra's Bauble over and over again.  This one can bring back Snapcaster Mages or Planeswalkers, so it's a really powerful card!

Pauper: Believe it or not, I couldn't find a Lurrus deck for Pauper.  That's because it's not legal, but pretend for a second that Mono White Heroic had access to it.

Pioneer
:  If you humored me and pretended what Mono White Heroic would look like with Lurrus, then maybe this is what you thought of when you did. This deck was all over the place in the Pioneer events last weekend.  I played it against the mirror once, and decided that I wouldn't be playing this deck, despite it being my favorite one in the format until it starts to lose popularity again.  It was miserable.

Vintage: Getting Black Lotus back seems like a great thing.  For you, not so much for your opponent.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Modern StaplesGrinding Station has come off the list after multiple weeks of losses.  I put Clever Impersonator into the Modern list, because I'm not sure where it goes.  Gyruda has done a number on things, but the Clone deck seems to be a multi-format kind of deck?  Orim's Chant is gone.  True-Name Nemesis is also gone, and it feels like it's been on the list forever.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is not known.  We'll get things synced up again soon!

In Closing

In things that I make out to be more important then they actually are, I won a four round digital FNM last week at a local store.  Well I wasn't actually there, but with WotC allowing stores to hold online events, I was able to reach back out to the local community and dip my toe in it.  I played Bant Gyruda, because it wasn't banned on Arena.  I also rearranged the furniture in my room to make it easier to get to the portable air conditioner that I have to use when the summer starts.  We had multiple freeze warnings in my parts of Kentucky though, so maybe I did this to early.  Lots of Animal Crossing again this week.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
