State of the Program for April 29th, 2022
Pioneer Challenges: These weekend events have been changed from small events to large events. This means that prizing goes from top 32 to a top 64 now.
Season 2 MOCS Changes: The winner and runner-up of the MOCS showcase will be invited to Worlds. Qualifiers and Super Qualifiers now feed in to Regional Championships. Showcase Qualifiers and the Leaderboard will give invites to the Pro Tour. Finally, the amount of invitations from Showcase Opens is reduced to just the winner.
Treasure Chest Updates: Four cards got new art, History of Benalia
, Mizzium Mortars
, (Platau) and Winds of Abandon
have the new art. 11 cards have gotten Old Border promos, five of them are from the physical promotion during the pandemic (Aven Mindcensor
, Dig Through Time
, Bolas's Citadel
, Goblin Guide
and Scavenging Ooze
). The other six are Stoneforge Mystic
, Preordain
, (Inquisition of Kozelik), Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
Mishra's Bauble
and Green Sun's Zenith
. In addition to these, the four demons and the contract have been added from the Read the Fine Print Secret Lair. 20 cards from the New Capenna commander decks were added, and finally, you can see the new avatars that are being added to the chests here.
Leadership Change: David McDarby, the interim Product Manager of MTGO has announced that he is leaving the MTGO team but remaining with Wizards of the Coast. The new Product Manager hasn't been announced yet.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: The lists that I presented this week were the most popular lists in the formats with Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty legal. This is according to mtggoldfish and is taken from their snapshots of the metagame during that time frame.
The Wandering Emperor
really pushed this deck to another level after the set came out. It was successful before the set came online, but after Neon Dynasty hit, it was played almost twice as much as it's closest other deck, Naya Runes. With that said it was only like 22% of of the reported decks, which makes for a really healthy Standard!
Legacy: Izzet Delver seemed to be just as good without
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
than it was without it. It's almost like the Modern Horizons 2 creature wasn't the issue in format, and instead it was something about cheap card draw, efficient removal and solid cheap threats with counter backup and disruption. I believe Izzet Delver has been near the top of the most played decks in the format in some form since Innistrad was first released.
Modern: Ragavan is not nearly the same kind of problem in Modern as it is in Legacy, but what if we took the Modern Horizons Modern format, and made it no reserved list Legacy and then created a new Modern that doesn't have
Blood Moon
or
Urza's Tower
pieces in it?
Pauper: At least this time the format wasn't dominated by Affinity, but instead it was dominated by cheap creatures, great disruption and even better countermagic? Pauper is Legacy without the rares, but with the same problems it seems. Early Magic history blue spells were just some of the best spells ever made.
Pioneer: Winota has improved so much from the glass cannon deck that it used to be. It's not a lean aggro deck that can get by without the help of the Ikoria legend.
Fable of the Mirror-Breaker
has been one of the best cards for aggro strategies from the set.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
DemonicTutors had a great weekend, winning both a Legacy and Modern Challenge. McWinSauce seems to have had a slightly better one, winning a challenge and an MOCS.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: With Streets coming out just yesterday, I decided to not run it in this week's price chart. Just like I have with new to MTGO sets. I'll give it a week before adding it in!

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $31,106. Last week it was $30,700. Gosh the Streets of New Capenna are awfully expensive right now.
Ugh, I got pricing done at 10:15 today. I've worked in total 70 hours so far this week and have had two appointments for my mental health.
But I turned 42 on Monday. I guess I have that and a freshly buzzed head to be thankful for.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
