State of the Program for April 8th, 2022
Streets of New Capenna: Previews start in proper for the set this week, on the 7th! You can find the preview schedule here. The card image gallery is here. The variant gallery is here.
Spotlight Cube Series: We've had Grixis, Temur, and Bant, now it is time for a cube without blue. The Mardu cube came up this week and you can read about the archetypes and card list here.
April Secret Lair Super Drop: The newest Secret Lair is out, but not yet ready to be sold. There is a New Capenna Showcase treatment that shows off Atraxa, Breya and Yidris. Matt Jukes did the allied colored check lands (I'm not sure what Glacial Fortress
), Magali Vileneuve has a new Death's Shadow
among others, Sidharth Chaturvedi has a new Concordant Crossroads
, Wayne Reynolds has new takes one 4 fan favorite Dwarf legends, the Left Handed Magic cards that were shown on April Fool's will be available, finally, Roman Klonek has sweet takes on Void Winnower
, Goblin Settler
, Collector Ouphe
and Vengevine
. MTGO of course no longer gets codes with these and I assume, like the other Secret Lairs without codes, we will see these in treasure chests.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: This is, what I feel, just an Orzhov Control list with
Fable of the Mirror-Breaker
and a couple of Red cards in it. I believe the Fables are there to help break the mirror match.
Legacy: Maybe the problem with Legacy isn't the new cards that get printed that keep Izzet Delver dominating, but rather the old suite of cards that had already existed the keep Izzet Delver dominating.
Modern: This Golgari deck 5-0'd recently and it looks really exciting to me to see something really cool in the format. This is a
Cabal Coffers
deck, a mono black control that wins with a giant
Torment of Hailfire
thanks to
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
.
Sylvan Scrying
helps you find the land you need.
Another Modern Deck: Another Golgari deck that excited me this week was this
Gyruda, Doom of Depths
reanimator strategy. I like it when neat things make a 5-0!
Pauper: I will always go nuts for a Pauper deck that features
Thermokarst
and
Mwonvuli Acid-Moss
. If there is anything that I need to make time for, I need to make time for this deck in a league on MTGO.
Pioneer: Pioneer innovation has taken off since the Pro Tour came back and the newest format was announced as the featured format. I'm not sure if this
Anointed Procession
backed token deck will take off, but it sure does have a lot of really cool tools to help it!
Another Pioneer Deck: Speaking of innovation, I can't remember the last time I saw Eldrazi tribal in the Pioneer format, and without the vast amount of Sol Lands I didn't expect to really see it in the format, but this
Karn, the Great Creator
backed version seems to be a solid starting place for the deck.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: I think most of the new prices on the Standard chart are because of the sudden rise and demand of Pioneer on MTGO.
Modern Staples: Looks like one addition this week.
Eternal Staples: A handful of additions to the list this week.
Pioneer Staples: This might be the most cards on the Pioneer list since the format started and I was tracking these. So many new to the list cards this week.

Pauper Staples: Pauper is in a constant state of flux with the bannings it seems.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $30,107. Last week it was $29,263. This is a gain of $844. I think the Pro Tour coming back was pretty decent for MTGO as well!
I have had my son since Sunday, my nephew came over on Thursday, and they have been waking up before I am used to waking up and dragging my old butt with them. I've been getting more done, and getting off work sooner though, so maybe a nice 8 hours of sleep seems good? Who am I kidding, the first day they are gone, I am gonna be up until 3 in the morning.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
