State of the Program for August 20th, 2021
Classic Cube: Ryan Saxe made this one, the twist is the fast mana comes at a cost! You can see a discussion of the cards and the archetypes here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: The 6-0 decks from the Arena decklist dumps are either the greatest troll job in the game or are secret bangers. I am not sure where this Simic deck ranks but it has 22 lands, all basic, a whole bunch of 2 drops in the main and
Solve the Equation
to search for land ramp I guess. This game may have finally passed my old self by, but I still love this deck.
Historic: One day, in the future, and it for sure won't be today, I'll miss Historic for what it was, before the digital only cards came to the format and arena. Before the Modern Horizons cards came to the client. I think for as much as I'll miss Historic, I'll just wish that Wizards of the Coast pooped or got off the pot. Are you all putting Pioneer on here? You've told us Modern wasn't coming to the client, why put in the effort to put in Modern only set? What is the point of Arena besides making money and how does MTGO fit here?
Legacy: It is good to see
Destiny Spinner
getting more play now. It's a really solid body with an outstanding effect on it, and an ability that ends the game stapled on. A 2/3 for 1G with the can't be countered text would be playable by itself, and it wasn't until recently and it is slowly becoming an multiformat star.
Modern: I for sure have a certain deck type, and I get hyperfixated on that particular deck for a couple of weeks and then move on. Enchantress though is one of those decks that I can't seem to not move on from. If it's playable, I am gonna try it at least a couple of times.
Pauper: It's Bogles, it's the closest I think I am going to get to an Enchantress deck in Pauper. I tried hard though!
Pioneer: I played this a couple of days ago during a stream and did very poorly with it. I picked the wrong version, I wanted to try the one with
Wish
in it, and then wanted to try one with
Wolfwillow Haven
but playing this version turned me off to both of them. I didn't play it well, I ended up, every time, making the incorrect decision when there was a decision to make, and got hammered for it by every person I played. Every player in Leagues on MTGO is a stellar player, and then there is me.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
AndyAWKWARD has been running incredibly hot with Sultai Ultimatum for weeks now in the Standard events.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider
came off the list this week. Alrund's Epiphany
also came off. Actually this was a pretty bad week for Kaldheim cards, as Koma, Cosmos Serpent
and Halvar, God of Battle
were removed as well. Stormwing Entity
was taken off as well.
Modern Staples:
Karn Liberated
is on the list this week.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples:
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $26,036. Last week it was $25,695. A small gain of $304 is still a gain right?
Gosh what a slow week it was! The prices were done on Thursday this week, and I played a lot of Boyfriend Dungeon. It's a dungeon crawling dating simulator where you date the weapons, so it's like Persona, but for swords instead.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
