State of the Program for December 14th, 2022
MTGO Forums: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here.
MTGO Discord: In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here.
December Secret Lair Drop: Highlighted by some sweet Transformer cards you can catch the next drop here.
Starter Commander decks: These are new to the shop and the exact product that you would buy in paper!
The Brothers' War Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone.
Patch Notes: The biggest one of the week is Demolition Field
working as intended even if the opponent declines. You can see the rest here.
Eternal Weekend: Congrats to mephidro who won the Legacy portion of Eternal Weekend with Elves! JUJUBEAN_2004 won the Vintage portion of the event. They played a sweet Bazaar of Baghdad
discard build.
Treasure Chest Changes: In addition to the Treasure Chest Only slot closing, a few cards are moving to the Curated slot. You can see the changes here.
Phyrexia: All Will Be One: The first previews of the next set came out during the weekly Twitch stream. There are going to be ten Planeswalkers in the set. You can see the first look overview here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is
here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:
Ongoing - Ixalan Block Flashback
December 17 - MOCS Showcase Open
December 18 - MOCS Showcase Open
December 21 - Vintage Cube
January 25 - A draft format
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: Standard, the decks in the format, at least feel fine. Standard, the format? Seems less so. It feels like it's mainly played online, and I've not really see paper play embrace the format again since play has picked up now that the pandemic is "over."
Legacy: Mono-White Initiative took the North American Legacy Championship by storm over the weekend, with 3 copies in the top eight. Here you can see Chris McGuire's list from the event.
Modern: Modern is in a neat place right now to where there is solid counterplay to the top strategies of the format. This Mono-Red Stompy deck looks to be one of the leading anti-meta decks. Look at all that hate,
Blood Moon
s and
Relic of Progenitus
and
Fury
all being powered out by the ruthless aggression of
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
.
Pauper: This ihe kind of deck that I will always love about Pauper.
Pioneer: Hidden Strings Combo has changed a bit. Yeah the idea is still the same, but
Hope Tender
has been added to the deck. It's another way to get the most mana out of
Lotus Field
and it works well with
Hidden Strings
as well!
Vintage: Mono-White Initiative took the North American Vintage Championship by storm over the weekend, with 3 copies in the top eight. Here you can see Stu Somers' list from the event.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
I spent, from last Wednesday, to Monday, many hours a day working on deckbuilding projects in Paper and on MTGO. I took apart a lot of decks in Commander, redid my Pauper decks (but kept together Cyclops), redid my Modern decks and downsized my Pioneer builds. I am getting so many packages from tcgplayer (including from our pals at Cape Fear Games!) that getting Christmas cards will take on a whole new meaning for me!
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
