State of the Program for December 17th, 2021
Season Qualifier Points: Season 3 ended on Wednesday. The 2022 season started then as well, taking Season 1 Qualifier Points.
2022 Magic Online Premier Play: Season 1 Started on the 15th, and will end on April 13th, 2022. It seems to mirror the current organized play system on MTGO, gives invitations to Set Championships on MTG Arena, and still has the Champions Showcase event. You can see the full document here.
Season 3 Showcase Qualifiers: Saturday sees a Modern Showcase Qualifier, and Sunday is a Legacy one. Pauper gets one on December 26th and Pioneer on January 2nd!
Super Qualifiers: There is one on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Limited, Pauper and Modern.
Kamigawa Neon Dynasty: Previews kinda started Thursday for the next set, they start properly on the 27 of January. You can see the info here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Modern had a fair share of bans this year. Field of the Dead
, Mystic Sanctuary
, Simian Spirit Guide
, Tibalt's Trickery
and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath
were all removed back in February. Modern is a format that can best be describe sometimes as Modern Horizons block constructed. The second Horizons set dropped this year and with all the important new cards in it many players feel like Modern is a rotating format now, based on when Horizons sets come out. Urza's Saga
, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
and the Evoke Elementals have made rental accounts almost useless as the prices of these singles soared. The kicker is this.
The deck of the year in Modern might have a bunch of weird equipment in it.
Tibalt's Trickery: This deck was a menace. You cascaded into a Trickery as early as turn one thanks to the Spirit Guide and then got something that usually broke the game be it an Eldrazi or whatever. This was a rough patch for Modern, in what was an otherwise bright year.
Omnath Pile:
Hammer Time: This is what I feel is the deck of the year in Modern. It may also be the best deck for Urza's Saga
in the format.
Death's Shadow: Death's Shadow
may be the best deck for Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
in the format as well.
Cutting Edge Tech will have the same purpose this week that we did last week, more decks of the year! This section will go over Pauper, which had an incredibly rocky year. Fall from Favor
was banned in January. Joining them in September was Chatterstorm
and Sojourner's Companion
. These bans were not enough to actually help the format. It was a slow motion train wreck all year long. Well, honestly, Commander Legends had a huge impact on the format, downshifting some new cards like Fiery Cannonade
and Abrade
. Each set seemed to have at least something playable and then Forgotten Realms, Modern Horizons and the Innistrad sets had some cheap artifacts and cheap draw for the format. Check out the decks below!
Fall from Favor: I know that this looks like an Izzet Skred and it is, but every blue deck in the format had some number of Fall from Favor
in it. It warped the format.
Chatterstorm: Another deck that warped the format. The Chatterstorm
still with First Day Of Class
made this very potent, but Galvanic Relay
also got a chance to shine here as well.
Sojourner Affinity: This was basically the same time as Chatterstorm. This was one of the decks in the format that could go head to head with the Squirrels.
Rakdos Affinity: This deck is making people run Dust to Dust
in the main.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Not much action here.
Modern Staples: Modern Horizons 2 prices have exploded again.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples: A couple of cards fell off this week.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,475. Last week it was $27,227. We got a small increase of $248.
I was up until 6am multiple days over the weekend. The tornadoes that did so much damage in Kentucky this past weekend may have missed me, but many Kentuckians lost everything in a short span of minutes. I know people that lost everything and coworkers that will have to deal with the reminders of this for so long. I watched a friend see a picture in Cincinnati, Ohio, and identified it as a picture of people they knew from Ohio county, Kentucky. We've rallied for the communities impacted, but they are going to need so much during this season and as they begin to rebuild. You may not like our Senator or Congress people, you may love our Governor, but in the end the people of the commonwealth are great people and deserve the help and well wishes. If you can help, please do so!
I'm astraphobic, and watching these storms triggered my panic and other issues. I hadn't been half a mile away from my house in nearly a decade but that didn't seem to matter to me when we raced to the storm shelter to seek safe haven from the storms. Going home I even got to see how much stuff had changed since I last saw it.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
