State of the Program for December 7th, 2022
Eternal Weekend Returns to MTGO: December 10-11 sees the return of Eternal Weekend. Taking the place of paper events in Europe, we have a Legacy event at 1am PT on the 10th, and a Vintage event at the same time on Sunday. You can see information for the event here.
MTGO Forums: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here.
MTGO Discord: In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here.
December Secret Lair Drop: Highlighted by some sweet Transformer cards you can catch the next drop here.
Starter Commander decks: These are new to the shop and the exact product that you would buy in paper!
The Brothers' War Redemption: This is going to start on Friday, thanks to Daybreak getting their system up earlier than they thought they would. Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone.
Patch notes: Update using versions in your collection is slated to work again. You can see the rest of the notes here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is
here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:
Ongoing - Supreme Pioneer Chaos Draft
December 10 - Standard Showcase Qualifier
December 11 - Legacy Showcase Qualifier
December 14 - Ixalan Block Flashback
December 21 - Vintage Cube
January 25 - A draft format
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: This looks like a really sweet list, which I think shows that you do not have to be Grixis or play with
Fable of the Mirror-Breaker
if you do not want to in Standard. Of course you are probably not a Hall of Fame player, like Edel is, so your results might not be the same!
Modern: I am really glad that
Mishra's Bauble
got a reprint and has made the artifact cheap in paper and MTGO. Every set should have a subset like Strixhaven and The Brothers' War. Cards should be cheaper!
Pioneer: I really like the Azorius Control lists in Pioneer. They have so many answers to many of the decks in the format and play a nice game that isn't really seen in a lot of formats anymore. True Control may be dying an archetype, but it lives on here.
Pauper: Actually Pauper may be the last true home for true control.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor
is off of the list.
Titania, Voice of Gaea
,
Mishra, Claimed by Gix
, and
Misery's Shadow
are also off the list.
Graveyard Trespasser
is gone, and the joy in tracking the Planeshift version of
Diabolic Intent
is also over.
Raffine, Scheming Seer
came off the list as well.
Modern Staples:
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples:
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
has left the list.
Bonecrusher Giant
stomped away.
Esika's Chariot
rode away. The Prismari and Witherbloom Commands have both come off the list.
Pauper Staples:
Skred
melted off the list.
Fireblast
came off the list as well.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Prices were done Wednesday morning. The new Hearthstone set is neat, and I am waiting for the new Spellslingers patch.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
