State of the Program for February 26th, 2021

In the News

Time Spiral Remastered Previews:  Those started in earnest Thursday with Gavin previewing a handful of cards and going from there.  You can see who is previewing what here.  You can see the galleries here and here for the bonus sheet.  Previews go on until March 4th, and the set will release on March 19th.

Universes Beyond: Hasbro had an Investor's Call Thursday! Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000 are coming to the game in 2022.  They will have the triangular holo stamp much like The Walking Dead cards have and will not be standard legal.  The article mentions Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks.  They will not just be Secret Lairs, and the Forgotten Realms set this summer will not be part of the Universes Beyond stuff yet.

Wizards and Hasbro:  Wizards is becoming its own operating division at Hasbro.  Called Wizards & Digital, it will manage Magic, Dungeons & Dragons and digital.  WotC had a 24% increase in profits from 2019 to 2020.  You can read that here.

Kaldheim Redemption Delayed:  Production delays have kept Kaldheim redemptions from being shipped.  Keep an eye out on the Magic Twitter account for more news there

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I've decided that I don't like Standard.  Decks like Emergent Ultimatum are super cool. So are decks like Dimir Rogues.  They also lead to incredibly unfun play patterns.  Sure you can cast the seven drop sorcery and just end the game, or get it countered and have everything in the game you did previously to that point be for nothing, but you could also play against a Mono Blue Tempo deck that splashes black and has so many different ways to attack you, be it mill, draw, removal, or cheap threat.  Standard is just over powered to me and I do not find such a powerful card pool great for such a small format.  My miles, of course, will vary.

Historic:  I don't know what is going on with Historic because I keep my Arena time small, but apparently they didn't ban the right cards and getting rid Omnath, Locus of Creation and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath didn't really do anything to help the format?  That's what others say.  However, the format also gave us Bant Angels so checkmate to those people, I guess.

Legacy: Ethereal Forager is seeing some love, it's a really good card, taking the place of stuff like Gurmag Angler or Tasigur, the Golden Fang and getting great value out of the spells in the Legacy format now that it has reopened a bit.

Modern: Tron, much like meat apparently, is back on the menu!

PauperJaspera Sentinel may not be the flashiest card to ever be a card, but it's a solid role player here in Pauper Elves.

Pioneer:  Pioneer seems to have new life since the bannings though.  There is a lot of really cool things going on in the format right now!  It still feels like a super Standard format, but hopefully as time goes on it will stop feeling that way.

Vintage: Lurrus is back in Vintage, and it appears as if it has decided to continue to chose violence.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: Not sure if it's Standard play or not, I think it might be more Pioneer than anything, but Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is back. Liliana, Waker of the Dead and Stormwing Entity have jumped back on the list as well.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $26,950.  Last week the number was $25,644. We've gained a bit this week, a little over 1,300 and I am putting all the blame for that on Auriok Champion

In Closing

Prices were done on Thursday.  It was a pretty slow week for me.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
