State of the Program for January 10, 2020

In the News

No bans in Pioneer:  The last weekly Pioneer ban announcement came out and nothing was added to it. The format, despite my best efforts to go better than 2-3 in a league in the new year, seems to be good.  The next ban announcement is on the 13th, might be the last time we have to bother with Mox Opal or Oko, Thief of Crowns in Modern?  Also of note, if a card is banned, it will not be banned on MTGO until the day after now

Theros spoilers continue:  You can see the latest on the Card Image Gallery, here. A lot of pushed stuff, just remember, when this stuff is running over you in Standard, we're missing some cards that they were designed to play with, like Veil of Summer, Field of the Dead, Oko, Thief of Crowns and Once Upon a Time.  I still think they should unban things in Standard and just let us sort it out again.  Though, I guess that would be awful for paper players.

Theros story told in blurbs:  Not sure why, but the Theros story is being told through the cards and social media posts.  It's left a lot to be desired.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

Just gonna talk about bans here, or at least what I hope they do with the next one on the 13th.

For Standard, nothing really needs to be done, but I sure would like to see them unban everything, because like I said, these cards were meant to be played with other cards that are no longer in the format, and I think letting us see the power of research and design and play teams fully unleashed would be kind of fun.  So I hope they unban everything.

What will they do?  Nothing, and that is reasonable.

For Pioneer, I don't think anything really needs to be done here either.  I have my eye on Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time still, but even those cards, in a format where Fabled Passage is the best fetch land, are fair cards it seems. The truly problematic stuff that was in the format had been addressed already.

What will they do?  Nothing, and that is the correct decision.

For Modern, wow.  I watched just a little bit of the last Star City event, and I wanted to weep.  What had WotC and Modern Horizons, War of the Spark, Throne of Eldraine and Core Set 2020 did to my baby boy favorite format?  You can tell the format is the new Legacy because it's been in need of help since the Hogaak ban and none has came to the format.  It's being ignored in favor of Pioneer, and that's okay, but a lot of stuff needs to be done to the format, and it's not going to be pretty.

For starters, Mox Opal and Simian Spirit Guide need to go.  Let's cut off the fast mana and make Modern fair again.  Another card that could go?  Arcum's Astrolabe.  Mana is already good in the format thanks to fetchlands and decades of other dual lands in the format.  Does it need to be this good?  We also need to go ahead and toss Veil of Summer, Oko, Thief of Crowns and Once Upon a Time on the scrapheap of cards that happened, were too good, and needed to be dealt with in formats.  Urza, Lord High Artificer, Teferi, Time Raveler and Karn, the Great Creator all create patterns of incredibly unfun play.  Teferi turns the game into Hearthstone, Karn makes it to where your opponent can't play at all, though if Mycosynth Lattice did exist, Karn would be fine. Urza, well Urza is just such a mistake.

Tron lands need to go too.  If you're going to ban Splinter Twin and Birthing Pod, formers pillars of the format, and ones that put huge design constraints on everything else, then at least discussing banning the Tron lands make sense.  Let's talk about banning fetchs in Modern too.  I think to a lot of players, Pioneer is great because fetches just are not in the format.

What do I think will happen?  I think they get Oko, and nothing else.  I guess that's better than nothing, and I hope I am wrong here, I just get a feeling that Modern is being mistreated right now, in favor of the shiny new toy.

Pauper?  I still want them to ban monarch and tron.  That's not happening, and outside of the times where I am extremely bored, I'm still not playing the format until it does happen.  Pauper is fine, it's just not the format that I enjoyed thanks to the help of Alex Ullman so long ago.

Legacy and Vintage?  Meh.  I don't think anything needs to happen, so nothing will happen.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: It's been a while since we've seen Command the Dreadhorde in any Standard lists, and with the format close to rotating, this is as cutting edge as I could get.

Legacy:  Another huge gainer from the last time is Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, it seems to be pretty popular not only in EDH but in Legacy as well!

Modern: Every so often a tribe that isn't Humans will do something in Modern.  Despite the degeneracy of the format now, sometimes playing Slivers is just a nice time.

Pauper:  Another Sliver deck!

Pioneer:  Pioneer really is in a fun place right now.

Vintage: Okay so this is more like Selesnya Eldrazi, but the green is just a really small splash.

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: Chandra, Awakened Inferno is out of control, like me at a Vegas buffet before my gastric issues started up.  Also wow, look at Cavalier of Thorns!

Pauper Staples:  In an effort to make things a bit easier for me, this will be the last week that I do the weekly Pauper tables.  While there is plenty of movement in regards to prices, it adds more time to something that already takes hours for me to create, and out of all the formats, this one seemed like the one that would benefit the least from a weekly table.  What I plan on doing is making it a monthly table, to be published with the first State of the Program each month.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $19,850.  Two weeks ago, the number was at $18,550.  Now, I am terribly bad at math, but this looks like an increase of 1,300 dollars.   That is a nice big number to start off 2020!

In Closing

I decided that this year would be the year that I learned at least one new language, so I am learning Spanish now.  I also want to learn a new instrument, but I have to save up for that as, it's not often that pianos fall off the back of trucks in Kentucky.  The break was nice, lots of games with Cassius, I miss him, and the last dog in the house died, so I'm very aware of how lonely I am now.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
