State of the Program for January 11th, 2023
MTGO Forums: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here.
MTGO Discord: In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here.
Starter Commander decks: These are new to the shop and the exact product that you would buy in paper!
Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone. The Brothers' War and Dominaria United are the sets able to be redeemed and there is about a quarter of Dominaria United sets left!
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: It's getting a bit harder to talk about Standard and the other formats as we wait to get to Phyrexia. The formats feel a bit solved and Standard, at least from a sharing decklists standpoint could use a shakeup. However, the format is pretty solid, the gameplay feels tense.

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Woodcaller Automaton
and
Arcane Proxy
came off the list.
Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset
came off the list.
Modern Staples:
Lord of Atlantis
swam to the list.
Orvar, the All-Form
has moved over here, finally as it makes the most sense, since Modern is where it is being played at.
Eternal Staples:
Rishadan Port
is off the list.
Pioneer Staples:
Castle Locthwain
is back on the list.
Arclight Phoenix
has flown back on.
Shark Typhoon
has come back off.
Mana Confluence
has returned to the list.
Leyline of the Void
in the opening hand.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
I was supposed to have an appointment with an ENT today, but ended up having to reschedule. Not having a ride will do to that to people. In other news I started to replay the Mass Effect series last week, and spent 25 hours on Mass Effect before taking it down and immediately jumping in to Mass Effect 2. I don't think I've played any of these games since 2012, and it was really nice to feel like I was being surprised by things that I didn't remember in the game. Persona 3 and Persona 4 go to Game Pass next week and I am trying to get the Mass Effect games done before I start the 80 or so hour replays of those two games. I've also read two books since the year started, Continue? The Boss Fight Books Anthology is what I most recently finished up, it wasn't really what I expected. I expected an anthology on actual Boss Fights, but got one by a group call Boss Fights. The second book I read was Disrupting the Game: From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo by Reggie Fils-Aimé. This one was a bit more than the average business book, and was kinda touching. Really enjoyed that one.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
