State of the Program for January 14th, 2022

In the News

Daybreak Game Company:  Keeping up with the move from Wizards of the Coast to Daybreak, They are looking to expand the team starting with a new Executive Producer.  You can see the job listing here.

Pauper Format Panel:  Wizards of the Coast announced a new player created panel to help out with suggestions in the Pauper format.  It is seven people lead by Gavin Verhey and includes representation from Europe, Japan, Brazil and the United States.  Former PureMTGO writer Alex Ullman is joined by Mirco Ciavatta, Emma Partlow, Ryuji Saito, Paige Smith and Alexander Weber.  They will be discussing changes to the format to take place either after or before the Neon Dynasty Previews. It is not mentioned where Pauper fits in competitive play at this point.  You can read the news here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

All the decks this week were from league play on MTGO, except for the Historic deck, because well, that format isn't on MTGO, which is just fine.

Standard
:  If you're looking for a cheap entry into Standard on MTGO this may be the best option for you.  26 tickets is a reasonable price for a Pauper deck, but when it comes to Standard this may be the best value on the client!

Historic:  I'm not entirely sure why I cover Historic on here, other than Dragonstorm is a lot of fun and I am happy that it gets a chance to be played in some format.

Legacy:  Okay so you Gyruda, Doom of Depths into an Auriok Salvagers and rebuy the Lion's Eye Diamond for as much mana as you can get on MTGO before your clock runs out. Then you kill them with a Walking Ballista that does enough damage to them, again before the clock runs out.  The deck seems cool but click heavy.

Modern: It's like Domain Zoo and Humans got together.

Pauper:  I don't think I have ever seen an elves list with so many card advantage cards. The copies of Magnify are a nice touch here as well.

Pioneer:  This deck has seen a bit of a growth in popularity.  I think that is because of Ancestral Anger

Vintage:

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: I think I am going to give cards a bit more time to fall off the list.  Five dollars is a nice number to track, but sometimes these cards just jump all over the place. If I can track Zendikar fetches without the world ending, a couple of sub-five dollar cards seem to be fine as well.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,701.  Last week it was $28,246.  Another small gain of about 500 or so.

In Closing

Prices were done Thursday night.

Played a lot of Genshin Impact, Fortnite, and Modern on MTGO this week.  Also I might have gotten back in to Arena.  Historic is still fine.  Standard is still a format is that played.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
