State of the Program for January 17, 2019

In the News

Modern Bans:  Oko, Thief of Crowns, Mox Opal and Mycosynth Lattice were all removed from the Modern format this past Monday. On top of that, Pioneer has officially been synced up with other formats ban announcements.  The article made sure to point out that Heliod, the Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista was something that Wizards is keeping an eye on.  You can read about the reasonings here

Secret Lair Drops Return:  Celebrating the Year of the Rat, players who buy this that expect foil new art cards of some of the most favorite rats in Magic.  This drop will include one copy of each of the following: Marrow-Gnawer, Pack Rat, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, and five copies of Rat Colony.  To be sure, the copies that one will get will be different from what pops up here on the site.  It also comes with a code for Arena Sleeves, but for some reason, MTGO has been left out of this Secret Drop. You can see what you're gonna get here.

Treasure Chest Updates:  From Twitter, the account tweeted out this:

Pretty slow news week, hope everyone is enjoying the Theros Beyond Death events online!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

I have no idea why week after week, that this is the hardest section for me to write.  Maybe I get all my hot takes out on twitter.  Maybe I just don't have many original thoughts, but this section, without a doubt is the hardest for me to write.  I think mostly, it's hard for me to write because a lot of this stuff that one would have strong opinions for, doesn't really bother me anymore.

The lack of a clear path for pro play?  I get why it bothers others, but I don't have a feeling on it, because pro play is not for me anymore.

Grand Prix attendence?  Oh my gosh, who cares?  So what if the main event is smaller?  Side events are blowing up and more than making up for that.

The lack of coverage?  Can't be bothered by that if one stopped watching it years ago right?

The lack of story?  Sure it would have been nice for Theros to have a novel, and something better than blurbs, but it's not gonna have one, and that is unfortunate.  However after the War of the Spark books, and how terribly unexciting they were, I would not have been surprised had Elspeth just Poochy'ed on out of the Underworld.  Her plane needed her so she just got up and left.

The number of bans?  Yeah that is troubling, and I am empathetic towards those who had a huge chunk of value taken out of their collections this past week.  That is never fun.  The London Mulligan has improved Magic greatly, but it has also took a big ole spotlight, and shined it directly on cards that are problematic, because the mulligan adds consistency to games.  If (and it felt like this) every game in Standard hadn't been Once Upon a Time into Gilded Goose into Oko, Thief of Crowns maybe those cards survive.  It's almost impossible to say.  The London Mulligan is both great and bad for Magic, it's great that games actually get to be played, and it's bad because who cares if you mulliganed to four when you have all three Urza pieces and a Karn Liberated.  I don't think they did enough for Modern, and they didn't touch Pauper, but at least cards went away finally.

It's hard for me to have hot takes anymore. Maybe it's because of therapy, and I have learned to stopped being so reactionary.  Maybe it's because I turn 40 this year and the takes have just cooled considerably.  Maybe I am not as invested as I used to be.

I want to write about the decks I have been playing, but who wants to read about me going 1-4 or 2-3 with something?  It's not exciting. It's almost kind of sad.  I've put so much effort into playing Magic this year, but instead of having results like the Lakers, Bucks or Clippers, I am ending up like the Warriors, Hawks or Knicks.  I'm sucking out loud, even while playing pretty well.  I don't know.

Maybe I'll bring a guest in to write some hot takes for me.  That seems almost reasonable.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I am not going to pretend that I know anything about new Standard, I know I opened my packs on Arena, redeemed some wildcards for copies of Temple of Enlightenment and Temple of Deceit.  I didn't even watch any of the streamers event on Wednesday, but managed to find this interesting decklist.

Legacy: If you're looking for something to do with your copies of Oko, Theif of Crowns on MTGO, give Legacy a chance!

Modern: This deck broke out, so to speak, at the last StarCity event.

Pauper
: A nice reminder of Winter, this Jeskai Snow deck looks to get great value from enter the battlefield creatures and artifacts while flicking them to gain more value.

Pioneer: I have spent most of the year playing Pioneer on MTGO. My record is very poor, like, gunning for the number one pick in the NBA draft poor. Maybe if I played Chonky Red, the worst named deck of 2020, it would be better. I just don't like red decks, unless they are casting Stone Rain.

Vintage: Here is something to do with your (Mox Opals), that's right play some Vintage on MTGO!

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: Bless this mess, or better yet, excuse our dust, as the Standard table is going through some huge changes!  Oko, Thief of Crowns finally made its way off the table, to land on the Eternal table, Theros cards are high right now, and M20 sees some new additions as well.  War of the Spark had a lot of movement this week and I am tempted to crack some War packs now.  I imagine this table will look a lot better next week.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

I got bored this week, and bought a lot of Treasure Chests after doing poorly in leagues.  I wanted to feel like a winner, but I never really opened anything good.  Thanks for the Play Points though!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $20,132.  Last week it was $19,850.  Gosh, seeing the big number start with a 2 again is super nice!  This was also done before the new set hit the prices, so next week, I expect it to be even higher!

In between sessions of Magic where I find new and exciting and entertaining ways to lose the game, I am hanging out in Azeroth, building a legion of hunters all in allied races.  Now having so many hunters may be boring to some, but I really enjoy hunting.  It's the only thing I like in the game.  I honestly don't know why I play it, I just solo everything.  I need friends.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
