State of the Program for January 22nd, 2021

In the News

Kaldheim Previewed: The full set has been spoiled, you can see the regular cards here, the special cards here, and the Commander lists here

Kaldheim Delayed in certain regions:  The Kaldheim prerelease in Australia has been rescheduled for February 5th, 2021.  Collector Boosters, Theme Boosters and Bundles have been delayed in Australia and New Zealand. They will not be available until next month.

Year of the Ox Promo:  APAC regions are going to get a special promo for the Year of the Ox, Sethron Hurloon General is a Minotaur from Jumpstart that is getting the new art treatment. I think I want one just to build a Rakdos Minotaur Commander deck.  You can see the card here.  No news to how it will come to MTGO, but I would assume through chests, if it does at all.

Magic Comics Coming Back:  April 2021 sees the return of Magic: The Gathering to the comic medium.  Boom! Studios will be behind the comic and it boasts a creative team of Jed MacKay, Ig Guara, Arianna Consonni and Ed Dukeshire.   It opens in Ravnica and looks to follow the events of the end of War of the Spark.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: It's almost time for Standard to add a new set, and Kaldheim sure looks like it's going to do some work in there.  I'm looking forward to the new Sagas!

Historic:  Last weekend the Kaldheim League Weekend thing happened.  I have no idea what it was, but there were decklists from the MPL and Rivals and you can find those when you click those names, but nothing was going to stop me from showing off the Indomitable Creativity of this Sage of the Falls combo deck.  You MAY draw your entire deck with The Locust God and Sage of the Falls, making an absurd amount of tokens from the God.  When you find the protection that you need you can end the draw, pass the turn with countermagic up and finish them off on the next turn.  Having a thing that gives everything haste in the deck might be needed, but other than Crashing Drawbridge I can't think of anything that would do it off the top of my head.

Legacy:

Modern: Every so often Twiddle Storm will pop up in Modern and remind us that it exists and then slink back off to obscurity for a period of time.  It was awfully fun to see this deck pop up in events recently.

Pauper:  It doesn't appear that anything really changed in Pauper other than taking out a few copies of Fall from Favor and adding more Spire Golems.

Pioneer:  This deck is basically a YouTube mixtape of all the things that slipped through the cracks in regards to Magic recently.  Not sure how a deck with Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, Teferi, Time Raveler, Omnath, Locus of Creation, Escape to the Wilds and Growth Spiral is legal to even play in any constructed format, yet alone the newest, most fragile format.

I may not play as much Historic as I used to, but I am really glad this nonsense isn't a part of that format.  It shouldn't be in Modern, and it shouldn't be in Pioneer.  These cards were mistakes and should be wiped from the game.

Vintage:

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,827.  The big number last week, which Pete did for me, and I forgot about checking my email for it, was $28,180.  Looks like there was a small loss of $353 this week.  Some of that can be attributed to the tokens that are being sold right now, some of that for Kaldheim's release.

In Closing

Prices were done on Thursday this week.  Spent a lot of time playing some digital board games with friends.  Ascension, Ticket to Ride, Battlegrounds and Shards of Infinity gave us a lot of different stuff to do this week.  One of the members of our gaming group had a child recently, like, as of this writing, they are in the hospital, have induced labor, so it's super early Friday morning, the baby will be here soon enough.  It's gonna be neat to get to know another friend's kid!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
