State of the Program for January 24, 2019

In the News

Creator Program: Streamers are getting a new program for rewards with help from StreamElements.  There are challenges, some seem easy, like winning a game with an opening hand of lands, others seem unhealthy like streaming for 12 straight hours.  Also announced was the Greenlight Fund, which seems to be a million dollars worth of grants for content creation.  People who were in the old creator program must apply again for the new one.  For more information go here

Promotions:  Did you know there were Magic: The Gathering promotions?  If so, neat, if not, here is a list of all the ongoing and out of date MTG promotions. Right now Twitch Prime members get a free deck for Arena!

Find Your Champion: Outside of the promos is a contest Wizards is running for the World Championship. Pick a player, they win, you get cool stuff.  If they don't win, you still get cool stuff!  Pick your player here!

MPL Roster: You can view the new MPL roster here.

Rivals Roster:  Also released was the group of players that will make up the Rivals portion of organized play is here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

I wish I cared any at all about high level Magic Organized Play anymore.  I used to be such a heavy user, I carve out time to sit down and watch coverage I would chat about highlights with friends, and try to figure out what I could learn from players. I think the last one I did that for was Autumn Burchett's win with Mono Blue Aggro at what, the first Mythic Championship?  I remember watching them play in the finals, and me making the plays that I would have as I "played" along, and realized that wow, every play that I made was awful, and every play that they made was not.  It wasn't an embarrassing kind of moment, but rather one that said, Joshua, you still have so much to learn about the game.   Seeing their friends rush the stage was one of the best Magic coverage memories I have.  One of the last interviews with Brian David-Marshall came after, and I sadly have no such memories from the next Mythic Championship.

I know that Matt Sperling lost and Eli Loveman won, but without checking up on decklists, I couldn't tell what they were playing, other than Modern, which is my favorite format.

I watched nearly none of that Mythic Championship. Modern is far and away my favorite format.  I don't know why I didn't partake.  The third Mythic Championship was the first arena one. I know why I didn't watch any of that one, the format for the event was confusing to me and I didn't really want to watch a video game.  I don't watch League of Legends, or Overwatch, or anything other than what my son plays, because I want to monitor and be a good parent.  Why would I want watch the NBA Jam of Magic: The Gathering?  I know that is a just me take, but sometimes I miss caring about pro play.

For the World Championship contest, I picked Gab Nassif.  He has been one of my favorite players for almost as long as I have played the game.  I don't plan on watching any of the World Championship, and haven't done so since they killed the large world event.  I know that this stuff is for others, because my Twitter feed goes wild for it, but this part of Organized Play is no longer for me, and that's okay.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Hushbringer seems like the kind of card that should be breaking out in a Standard filled with lots of creatures doing things when they enter the battlefield. Is it good enough for maindeck play? Probably, as the way this Standard has done so far it seems like it could really quash things.

Legacy: I am trying my best to present neat Legacy decks, but much like Vintage I don't know a ton about the format. I know I like casting Goblin Charbelcher, but I can't keep posting that deck every week, so here is a Sultai deck that has a lot of really cool cards in it.

Modern
: AmuLIT has gotten some upgrades and new cards from Theros Beyond Death, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove gives you another way to play extra lands, and some versions are also adding a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle way to win as well.

Pauper
:  I guess calling this Rakdos Devotion is a bit wrong, as it is mainly a mono black shell, with red splashed for better removal. Terminate is still a really good card that I think is underplayed in the format.

PioneerUnderworld Breach is getting the Pioneer hype now that it appears that the (Walking Ballasta) and Heliod, Sun-Crowned doesn't appear to be Splinter Twin.  Is this the deck that gets Lotus Field banned or will it just be another in a line of acceptable combos?  Can't wait to find out, and I hope Lotus Field stays around forever.

Vintage
: It is always wild to me to see Dredge winning Vintage events. Hopefully that same child like wonder I hav for this deck will never die.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: We all knew that Theros Beyond Death prices were gonna tank, and they sure did, a week after release, now it's time for them to be rented out and find a price that isn't absurd, like last Friday, when Heliod, Sun-Crowned was pushing 80 tickets per copy.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 60.

Wait what?

Today's Pete Jahn's birthday, so instead of a big number, we're getting a smaller one, and wishing Pete and happy birthday!

Don't get sick.  That's about the most important advice I can actually give someone.  I spent most of the week doing a thing I love, sleep, for reasons I have, being sick.  It was nice to see my Aunt and Uncle though, even if I wasn't 100 percent.  On top of dealing with being under the weather, I had a plumbing emergency pop up on Thursday, and had to take care of that, because well, a toilet that continues to run after flushing wastes an incredible amount of water.  At least they were able to snake my drain too, because having dirty kitchen water back up in to the bathroom sink is really not a great time.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
