State of the Program for January 28th, 2022
More Bans: Standard saw new bans. Alrund's Epiphany
, Divide by Zero
and Faceless Haven
were all removed from Standard. Legacy sees Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
leaving the format. Historic saw Memory Lapse
leave and Teferi, Time Raveler
get re-balanced and added back to the format. No other formats were changed, but Aaron Forsythe said the data did not point to making any changes in Modern. You can read about the changes here.
Alchemy Changes: 18 cards got changes this week, Teferi leads the way, a lot of cards that feature Venture were buffed a bit. Divide by Zero
also got a nerf here as well. You can read about those changes here.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Previews: Previews for the newest set started on Thursday. You can see the rest of the preview schedule here. In addition you can see the card gallery here and the variant card gallery here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Decided to show off just Pauper this week since there were other bans in other formats and with Neon Dynasty Previews starting Standard is a lame duck format. Let's take a look at what Pauper looks like after the first weekend of the new format!
There is some exciting stuff here to be sure, Affinity and Tron both came back retooled and did well in the weekend events, and old favorites that had been pushed out are coming back. I'm not sure Mono Black control is fun to play against, but apparently Pauper is a better format when it or Orzhov Pestilence are decks!
Songs of the Damned Combo: Storm master Bryant Cook took this
Songs of the Damned
cycling combo deck to the top in the Sunday event. It's a complicated deck with rituals, cycling spells and empyting your library to cast monster copies of Songs of the Damned and then
Reaping the Graves
to get cards back and eventually kill with a
Drannith Stinger
.
I think.
Grixis Affinity: Affinity stayed in Grixis and replaces
Atog
with
Krark-Clan Grunt
. This leans more on
Disciple of the Vault
then previous versions did.
Gruul Cascade: Cascade decks cascade in to value, though most of the time it felt like the value was Land Destruction. Now it's card drawing creatures!
Temur Land Destruction: What what was that I said about cascading in to land destruction? This one from JeskaiDad finished 14th, if that name is familiar, it's because he's part of the Common Knowledge podcast here on
PureMTGO. Congrats on the finish!
First Day of Class Combo: Playing in a format after new bans can be thought of like going to the
First Day of Class
! Okay yeah that was a reach, but goblin combo is back, and between this and the Songs of the Damned combo earlier, it's clear that there isn't enough playable graveyard hate!
Curve Control: Izzet Delver and Izzet Blitz are both better decks more likely but I love these non creature 40 spell decks that win with a token generator after crushing your opponent in card advantage. Used to play this with the Minotaur token maker and
Accumulated Knowledge
and Pauper was a wild place back then!
Gruul Madness: I do not feel like there are enough
Arrogant Wurm
or
Reckless Wurm
in the deck but I also spent way to many hours on trying to make Madness work myself, so I am happy to see this going on!
Tron: Tron lost a ton in the bans and seems to have gone back to a big creature spell deck that relies on Eldrazi to finish things off. The Flicker elements still exist, but Tron being playable is still nice.
Relay Combo: Here is a combo deck that doesn't rely on the graveyard, outside of
Ardent Elementalist
.
Rakdos Metalcraft:
Bleak Coven Vampires
is a great
Siege Rhino
in the format. I am really glad that a
Cleasning Wildfire
deck exists in the format still.
Orzhov Pestilence: This seems like one of the best anti aggro decks in the format, and one that might be able to answer the grave based combo decks easily if they keep things up.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Going to clean up the Standard list before Neon Dynasty comes to MTGO.
Modern Staples: If you were looking to pick up a cheap copy of
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
after the ban in Legacy, I have some bad news for you.
Eternal Staples: Some lower stuff is back on the list this week.
Pioneer Staples: Couple of new cards on the list this week, but the biggest addition is probably
Alrund's Epiphany

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $30,101. Two weeks ago it was $28,701. This is a $1,400 dollar jump and because it hasn't been added in to mtgotraders.com, it does not include Double Feature.
It was just a regular week for me, I got back on to Hearthstone after taking time off since their sex pest lawsuits to do battleground stuff. Reached Legend on Storybook Brawl and built Exodia on Master Duel. I played no Magic this week, but did trade out my Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow stuff for Double Feature stuff on the client.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
