State of the Program for January 29th, 2021

In the News

Kaldheim release:  Thursday was not a banner day for either client, despite Arena coming to Android devices.  Arena had a bug with Glittering Frost and Lifelink.  MTGO had all kinds of bugs, some with treasure chests (if you opened them, getting the backside of a double faced modal card was possible) Goblin Token makers like Empty the Warrens and Goblin Rabblemaster made Swamps that could attack but not tap for mana.  Voice of Resurgence made tokens whenever it wanted to.  It was not the best day.  Most of these have fixes scheduled for before publication, some of them do not, make sure you check Twitter and such for any up to date information.

Magic Legends:  The new video game, once an MMORPG, now a Diablo clone featuring Magic: The Gathering characters is coming to open beta on PC in March.  It will be released on consoles later on in the year, namely being Xbox One and Playstation 4.  You can check that out here

Ultimate Edition 2:  Production issues have pushed this back to May 7th.  Let's hope that Sniffygull gets one for their birthday!

Treasure Chest Update: Booster Packs are in, slots in the chests have been reduced, and so have cards available in the chests.  Play Points have been increased.  You can see the new contents of the chests here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

To celebrate the release of Kaldheim, here are a bunch of Standard decks from the early parts of the release.  We also have a Historic deck and a Modern oneMaybe the biggest winner of all for Standard is both Gruul Aggro and Dimir Rogues, because it does not seem like there is anything in the set that will knock off those two.  Thankfully we get some time to figure that out!

Standard
:

Historic:  I feel like this deck, which I got from mtgazone, might have been put in wrong.  It feels like there is a sideboard here.

Second StandardBinding the Old Gods is quite a solid Magic card.

Modern: SodekMTG went 5-0 and posted the list that they did that with on Thursday.  I typed it up and put it in our deck generator.  They updated it later in the day with a pretty sweet sideboard change.  You can see that here.

ElevensesCyclone Summoner is exactly the kind of top end threat that this deck wants.  A one sided Evacuation that clears the path for your Giants is neat!

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $26,750.  Last week it was $27,827.  A chunk of $1,077 came out this week.  The prices were done when Kaldheim was added to the site, so a lot of placeholders were in there, but that doesn't explain losing nearly 1,100.  I mean other than prices going down for people getting tickets from selling stuff for new drafts before the set came on.

In Closing

I took part in the Kaldheim Early Access event on Wednesday and got prices done for the article on Tuesday. I didn't really have much time for everything else with all this fun Kaldheim stuff happening!  The limited format seems, so far, to be a lot of fun.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
