State of the Program for January 31, 2019

In the News

Cracked.com spoiled Unsanctioned:  It's unlikely to come to MTGO (outside of the new sweet lands), but Unsanctioned, the newest silver border product is coming out next month and comedy site, Cracked.com was selected to spoil the whole thing.  Kinda clever.  You can see the full gallery here.

Viewing parties:  Wanna get a sweet Crucible of Worlds?  All you got to do is play in and top 16 an event during Worlds at your local game store!  For info go here!

ManaStrike releases:  The Magic: The Gathering skinned take on Clash Royale came out on Andriod and iOS devices this week.  I gave it a short whirl on MEmu, because being agoraphobic means one does not have to care about the newest phone technology, and it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't for me.  If it makes it's way to a non mobile platform, I might like it more, but MEmu is meh, and I don't want to free up space for it on my fire.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

The only hot take I have this week is my fever, which is currently at 100.3, if my thermometer is to believed.  It's hot enough to make things miserable, but not hot enough to make think things are incredibly wrong.

Outside of the one article I linked to in this week's Around the Web, I hadn't consumed any Magic content outside of Legit and Pure this month.  I have to do better.

I also have to feel better.  So that's my hot take this week, wash your hands, and don't get sick.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Just showing off the Showcase winning decklists this week, but I am super glad that The Birth of Meletis has found a home somewhere.  For what you get out of the saga, it sure feels like a powerful card.

LegacyUnderworld Breach did some work in Legacy, a format filled with cheap spells that can take advantage of the enchantment.

Modern: Amulet Titan decks confuse me, and I am still not sure that the best build has been found, but it's also weird that a successful Modern deck is running dang near thirty lands now.

Pauper:  WotC did their best to pull Delver back in Pauper, and for the most part, where the format seems imbalanced towards Tron it appears to have worked, but the cards are still just so good for Delver decks.

Pioneer:  It's gonna be interesting to see how Pioneer evolves after the Player's Tours.  Does Inverter of Truth get the axe or is it a fair combo deck?  Kinda excited to see how the format shakes up.

Vintage: Shops, in my opinion is a fun deck, but Mishra's Workshop really skates by the restricted list huh?

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Brian Demars talks downshift candidates in Pauper.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples:   Cards from Theros Beyond Death have seemed to have reached reasonable prices.  For a bounce spell and a Rishadan Airship with Flash, Brazen Borrower sure is an expensive Mythic.  It's good, don't get me wrong, but Mythic wise, it's just so unexciting.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $20,795.  Two weeks ago, the big number was $20,132.  Some of this is of course, the addition of Theros Beyond Death and some is from rental services driving up the costs of cards, but still an increase of $663.

In Closing

I spent most of the week under the weather again, and things got super bad on Thursday as my body decided that fatigue and fever were both things I really needed to have.  I don't recommend it.  I've played some Magic this week, and some WoW, and have fallen in love with Tale's End especially after I countered a Nissa, Who Shakes the World and the trigger from a Hydroid Krasis where x was equal to 14.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
