State of the Program for January 7th, 2022
Vintage Cube: This is coming to an end, if you have a Vintage Point, this is the last week to use it. Unused Vintage Points will be taken off accounts on January 12, 2022.
Modern Horizons 2: This limited format will also be leaving MTGO on January 12, 2022.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
I decided to go with decks that won challenges this weekend, and as it just so happens, a lot of formats had the same archetype win those events. You can check the doubles of those in the next section.
Standard: At least a snow deck is winning in the winter?
Historic: This deck has been more fun than I thought it would be. I played more than one game where I got to activate
Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
more than once in the same turn. Just raining Planeswalkers!
3 Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
1 Chandra, Acolyte of Flame
3 Chandra, Awakened Inferno
1 Chandra, Flame's Fury
1 Chandra, Pyromaster
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
4 Karn, Scion of Urza
4 Karn, the Great Creator
2 Ugin, the Ineffable
3 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
3 Anger of the Gods
4 Coldsteel Heart
4 Mind Stone
4 Interplanar Beacon
4 Karn's Bastion
13 Mountain
1 Chandra, Dressed to Kill
1 The World Tree |

Vintage: The price of Force of cards are really higher than they should be. I expect Daybreak Studios, when they take over, to make sure MTGO is on a subscription plan with a battle pass.
Modern: One of the best Modern decks of last year is continuing on to being one of the best decks of this year!
Pauper: Same goes with Affinity, but I do expect WotC to do something, card legality wise in Pauper.
Pioneer: I've showcased this before, but Pioneer having a second combo deck after losing the
Inverter of Truth
deck has to be great for the players that love this stuff.
Alchemy: Digital Magic is fine and all, but if you're gonna wait four weeks to rebalance things, because in three weeks you have events, then maybe digital Magic isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
Legacy: I got Legacy and Vintage confused this week.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Sorin the Mirthless
has been added to the list.
Modern Staples: It looks like Modern Horizons cards are steadily going back up on MTGO.
Eternal Staples: I added a couple of Legacy staples that slipped under the radar for way to long.
Pioneer Staples:
Pauper Staples: I figured once a month is enough to cover Pauper cards.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,246. On Christmas Eve it was
$27,295. We have gained about $1,000. Well $951.
I had a great week with my son! It was fun and relaxing, filled with games, cartoons, good food and good times. This week I decided that I would give Genshin Impact a try and turns out for shorts bursts it's not really bad, but I also just started.
Prices were done on Thursday while I peacefully watched at least seven inches of snow fall in my part of Kentucky.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
