State of the Program for January 8th, 2021
All-Access Tokens Returning: Coming back next week, with more information during that time frame as well, All-Access Tokens are returning and they will be around for two weeks, starting next Wednesday. Make sure to keep an eye out on MTGO.com for all of that information.
Kaldheim Previews Continue: Kaldheim had their preview show on Thursday on Twitch. You can check out the replay here.
Arena coming to Android: With the Kaldheim update, Arena will be mobile as it makes its way to Android devices. You can see the recommended specs and required chipsets here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is

January 13 - January 20:
New Spotlight Cube
January 20 - January 28: Vintage Masters Flashback
Limited Super Qualifier - January 9th
Limited Qualifier - January 10th
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 25 Tix / 250 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: This is the Standard deck you want to play if you want to kill every creature.
Historic: I played the mirror match in this last night, and was miserable for 20 whole minutes.
Legacy: This deck really misses Top, and I think with things being digital, a chance to unban the card, just to see how it does, could have happened. Would it still have messed with tournament speed? Who knows, but with the digital world holding everything, we could have gotten some data!
Modern: Until Modern Horizons 2 comes out, I am trying to highlight Modern decks that do not need fetch lands. I'm not sure how long I'll go on with this, but am also sure I will forget about it in three weeks.
Pauper: Pauper is going to get some better mana bases now that snow-covered duals are coming out in Kaldheim.
Skred
, an already great card, is going to get better.
Into the North
is a thing that Alex Ullman suggested picking up!
Pioneer: This is what Feather decks have evolved in to since Pioneer started.
Vintage: It is always wild to me when Dredge does well in an event because I don't really think of
Bazaar of Baghdad
as one of those classic Vintage cards, even if it is a pillar of the format. It has always felt so easy to disrupt, but I guess if you don't get a first turn, it doesn't really matter huh?
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
is a new addition to the chart this year!
Sea Gate Restoration
also came back to the list.
Modern Staples:
Noble Hierarch
has come back off the list. Golgari has seen a bit of an uptick in play,
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
is back on the list because of it.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples:
Collective Brutality
is back on the list.
Bomat Courier
continues to confound me. I'm still tracking it though. I've also added
Lotus Field
and
Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
to the Pioneer list. I feel like the former is seeing a ton of Modern play, and the later is seeing it in Legacy, but for now, there is just enough play in Pioneer to keep them here.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,045. The last time it was reported, the week before Christmas Day, the number was $26,457. That is an increase from three weeks ago of 1588. How will the tokens effect this? I'm assuming negatively, but we'll see how things go and what exactly the tokens are for soon enough!
I went to bed on Christmas Eve after watching a church service, I guess a Midnight Mass is what they called it, it's been a while since I actually did church stuff. I'm not sure why part of the sermon talked about people mattering, but I took that to heart, and decided that I mattered. I quit smoking on December 25th, and haven't have nicotine in my body since December 27th, when the last patch I wore was taken off. It's been a rough two weeks, but my blood pressure is down a lot, and I can attribute that with no smoking anymore and changing my diet a bit.
I have played a ton of Pioneer so far this year, but am not seeing great results. I was surprised when an opponent cast Teferi, Time Raveler
. That seems like the kind of card that would be banned in the format.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
