State of the Program for July 12th, 2023
MTGO Socials: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here. In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here. MTGO has a Twitter account, and can now add an account for Facebook and Instagram.
Two-Factor Authentication: This is in Account Settings. To turn it on you will be asked for your account password and a 6-digit code sent to the email associated with your account. You can use either an email or authenticator based system. This will help keep your accounts secure, you can read about the system here.
Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone. Currently being redeemed is The Brothers' War (About Half-Gone) Phyrexia: All Will Be One, and March of the Machine. As of May 23, 2023, Redemption Tokens are non-refundable!
Challenge Schedule Changing: Two Prelims on Friday nights are now becoming small Challenge events. This helps players in the Asia-Pacific region. Saturday is also getting another Modern Challenge. Both of these are 32 player events. The Saturday 6 a.m. Standard Event is going back to a small event prize structure.
All-Access: To better help MTGO users that are using the client to prepare for Pro Tour Barcelona (the Modern Pro Tour on July 28th), All-Access is back! Copies of the best card in the set for Modern, The One Ring
are above 100 tickets per, and having All-Access tokens in this time period helps users who want to prepare. There will be no Super Qualifiers during this All-Access period. It's still $25.00 though. This lasts until July 24th!
Freeform with Commander: Open Play room on the client that puts custom rules into place that also gives you color identity rules! This allows for commander varients to have a place on MTGO. You'll be able to play PreDH, Oathbreaker, Duel Commander, almost nearly any rule set of Commander you want! There are some recent rules changes in popular formats that are not on MTGO yet, apparently commander damage is not a thing in Duel Commander and Oathbreaker allows partners but each partner gets their own signature spell so these changes might come later, they might not, but it's a step in a direction that I did not think was going to be taken. You can read the article about it here.
Commander Legends Draft: Until July 19th, the format will have keeper and phantom events on MTGO. These will be 4 player draft pods. Prizes will be based on votes. You can see the prizes here.
Patch Notes: You can check out the notes for this update here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

It feels like it's been forever since I did a deck for each format, and this week I am bringing you two decks for Standard! What a blessing!
Standard: I knew for sure as soon as I saw the deck I wanted to feature it this week. Yeah it's basically the Mono Black Aggro deck that is already in the format, but giving the deck a splash of color opens it up to a lot of methods to protect your decks that the Mono Black doesn't offer, and gives you outs to things that 1 for 1 removal doesn't give you outs to.
A Second Standard: To me, the most shocking thing isn't that Esper Control is doing well, it's that there is a lack of things one would consider staples in the deck in the format, and not having
Wedding Announcement
feels a bit weird to me for the deck.
Legacy: I am intrigued by these cheap value style Reanimator decks in the Legacy format right now. I did share a Grixis version from last week, and this week the Esper version seemed to come on strong.
Modern: I love the new look of the Creativity deck. It's still the same basic deck but swapping the blue for White countermagic in
Reprieve
.
Pauper: White Aggro is always nice to see in Pauper.
Pioneer: The Boros Exile deck looks cool and takes advantage of the strong exile cards in the format.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Portal to Phyrexia
is off the list.
One with the Multiverse
is gone too.
Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The Explorer Anthology on Arena killed my excitement about new cards coming to the client. At least the Pioneer Creativity deck will exist, and Thespian's Stage
will be on Arena, to play well with the zero copies of Hidden Strings
on there.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
