State of the Program for July 1st, 2022

In the News

20th Anniversary Series:  552 players qualified for the event, gaining both the Constructed and Limited tokens needed.  MJ_23 won the event and took home one of the largest MTGO prizes ever.

Double Masters 2022:
The new set hit Treasure Chests on Wednesday and League play started on Thursday.  With the new set also comes some changes to Treasure Chests and drop rates for Baldur's Gate cards.  You can check out all the information about events here.

League Changes:
Standard and Vintage leagues have had a bit of an issue with wintrading recently, so in order to combat that, Daybreak is put a new payout in place. You can see the new pay out here.

Warhammer 40,000:
This product has been delayed until October 7th, 2022.  This will also impact the Secret Lairs for the set, Orks, Age of Sigmar and Blood Bowl.

New Product Manager:
Taking over from David McDarby is Tony Mayer, who long time MTGO players will know better at DEC_Squid.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Used to seeing this as a Pioneer deck, but the deck looks to have have adapted really well to the lack of Faceless Haven and Curious Obsession!

Legacy:  I am old enough to remember when Painter's Servant decks were mono red in Legacy and now they are basically Money Pile.  The game has changed a lot!

ModernFable of the Mirror-Breaker is a multi-format all-star, sees a wide range of play, and I don't think it sees enough as it is!

Pauper:  Not gonna lie, I am not really sure what this deck does, but it did 5-0, and let's be honest, the next Pauper deck I feature on here is probably gonna have at least one card from Double Masters 2022.

Pioneer:  This 5-0 deck looks just fine.  It's a fever dream and lets Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice shine.  I can respect that.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples:  Two cards came on to the list this week, and a ton fell off the list this week.  Standard is going to continue to be weird while we wait for the next set and rotation.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,285.  Last week it was $27,377.  Even with the new set coming out, the price went down $92.

In Closing

I played some PreModern on MTGO last week, and that started a Cascade of me playing in the Player Run Events on MTGO and with the help of Gatherling.  I tried out Tribal Wars, and ended up building a deck that didn't work (No matter how hard I tried, Unmarked Grave is not putting a Gryuda, Doom of Depths in to the graveyard) but rebuilt an hour before the event, and gosh Eldrazi are still potent even if there are no copies of Reality Smasher or Thought-Knot Seer.  I played my first games of Penny Dreadful on Monday, prized in my first Penny Dreadful on Tuesday, and am waiting for leagues to start for other formats.  Gatherling is great, it's like MTGMelee, but with deck filters for the off the wall formats.  I'd love to see some Old-School support on there, but maybe it just doesn't exist on MTGO.

Anyways, I still want to grind the online series, but it's Vintage this month, and leagues are fine, but sometimes it's nice to play a 60 card format and remember why I fell in love with the game.

Also had some issues readjusting to life off of antidepressents.  I had a really bad Saturday.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
