State of the Program for July 3rd, 2020

In the News

Stuff:  It's a slow news week.  Core Set 2021 prereleased last weekend, and will release this weekend.  There is really nothing new to report this week, as I do not feel like typing up a bunch of community drama.  For everything that happened this week, make sure to listen to our podcast, Freed from the Real!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

I played a ton of Magic on Arena last season, basically ignoring MTGO and the goals that I had for myself in the Pokemon card game.  I wanted to make my push to mythic finally, and get it out of the way, just so I could say I have done it.  I got as high to Diamond 2 before a string of losses would send me plummeting back down the ladder.  It wasn't just Standard either, Historic was giving me the same junk, I would fight, rise, fail and fall, and it hurt me.  The ladder system damaged my perceived value as a player and I figured a new set would shake things up, as well as some rest from playing the game.

I have not won a single constructed match on the ladder since the new season started.  Okay, I did just finish a SCG event at 3-1 so maybe things are swinging back my way, but before Thursday night, things were miserable in Claytorville, population me.

Why am I finding this miserable?  Well three cards that have been in the format for a long time I felt have needed to be addressed and yet, they haven't been.  Those cards are Teferi, Time Raveler, Wilderness Reclamation and Growth Spiral.  Teferi makes your opponent play a game of have an answer for this, or play Hearthstone.  Wilderness Reclamation seems like a fine card, but being able to cast a threat, and then counter the threat that you have on your turn is astounding.  Growth Spiral is what enables this.  In my day Rampant Growth was a sorcery and didn't draw you a card, now we have to deal with an instant speed Rampant Growth that sometimes allows you to also play Mystical Dispute, which can be used to counter the Growth Spiral you're also playing.

There are other problematic cards in the Standard and Historic formats.  Nexus of Fate was a super cool promo for the set.  Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath really plays well with all the cards that I find miserable in the format already.  To me, the most problematic card in these formats is Growth Spiral.  That's not to say other formats need help too, but I'm playing more Modern and Pioneer, and it feels like Growth Spiral, Wilderness Reclamation and Teferi, Time Raveler are stifling the formats, almost forcing players to either play one of those decks or lose.  As you can see in this part of the column I have peppered in lists from recent Standard events, be it the Channelfireball Pro Standard Showdown or Challenge events on MTGO.  Growth Spiral allows so much redundancy to happen in the Standard format.  51 percent of the field during the ChannelFireball event for instace was a Growth Spiral deck.  The only thing different was the splash color that the ran, red for Wilderness Reclamation, White for Teferi, no splash for better mana Black for Casualties of War or even using Elemental packages to power out early Genesis Ultimatum.  Right now, it appears to be slightly better on MTGO, where it looks like 30 percent of the reported decks are Growth Spiral and 56 other cards.

Granted these cards are going to rotate out of Standard soon, but why should they continue to be a part of the format?  Why has Teferi and Wilderness Reclamation despite being in format warping decks that saw Veil of Summer, Oko, Thief of Crowns, Field of the Dead and Once upon a Time dodged bans for so long?

I truly do not understand and I feel as if it has made Standard worse, it's made Pioneer and Modern worse as well.  I'm just sad that I have to focus on Standard right now, because I could write some more words about Pauper being neglected as well right now.  I won't but I certainly could.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I posted enough Standard decks this week!

Historic:  I know I wrote about the Growth Spiral decks of Standard, but I needed to show off one in Historic too.

Legacy:  I like the idea of Worldgorger Dragon comboing off to give you so much mana that winning with Duskmantle Guildmage is a thing that happens.  It's weird not seeing Oona, Queen of the Fae here for sure.

Modern
Fierce Empath is making its presence known in Modern, where it can tutot up a Primeval Titan and act as additional copies of Summoner's Pact that don't kill you.

Pauper:  I will always feature this deck whenever I can.  Kiln Fiend and Nivix Cyclops are bae.

Pioneer:  Yeah there is a missing card here, but this deck looks like an incredibly good time!

Vintage:

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

In Closing

Still playing an incredible amount of Fortnite, as it seems ever since Core Set 2021 released I can't actually win at Magic, be in Historic, Modern, Pioneer or Standard.  I can't actually win at Fortnite either, but it is fun to play with my nephew and brother.  It's the first thing me and my brother have done together in years.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
