State of the Program for July 8th, 2022
Baldur's Gate: Daybreak Games said that they would be doing something about Baldur's Gate cards in regards to the supply issues for the set and Pauper. While they upped the presence in Treasure Chests, they recognize that it wasn't enough. Make sure you keep an eye out here or on the Magic Online Twitter account.
Fortnite: Wrath of God
, Dance of Many
, Etherium Sculptor
, Grim Tutor
, Triumph of the Hordes
, Smuggler's Copter
and Planar Bridge
are the cards that are getting the Secret Lair treatment from the Fortnite crossover. In addition to these cards, there will also be reskinned basic lands featuring art from the popular Video Game franchise. Art on the cards range from Kevin the Cube, the Storm, a Llama, and most importantly, my two sons, Fishtick and Meowscles are now on Magic cards that I will be playing with. Locations on the basic lands show Shark Island and Weeping Woods. They also show other locations but I don't remember their names. You can purchase these starting on July 21st. You can see the images here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: While the formats that need new cards to come in might get solved and maybe a bit stale, it is nice to see some new stuff in the Standard format.
Storm the Festival
is a fine Magic card, and while it gets more run in Pioneer, it's nice to see it find a small home in Standard.
Legacy: Looking to do something with the cheap
Allosaurus Shepherd
s that are in Double Masters 2022? Play Elves!
Modern: (Here is something you can do with the cheaper
Force of Negation
that you can open in Double Masters 2022. The Summer is weird and not having a new set is even more weird!
Pauper: This is the hot new deck in Pauper.
Basilisk Gate
is gonna do some work, but it's weird to not see the original Gates in here as well. Maybe the flexibility that the other Baldur's Gates offer make them a bit more important than some Guildgates?
Pioneer: This deck passes the vibe check for me.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: A couple of cards from Forgotten Realms jumped back on to the list. It's weird how expensive Standard is for a format that no one plays thanks to Arena anymore.
Modern Staples:
Surgical Extraction
fell off the list.
Eternal Staples: Baldur's Gate has been nice to some of the Eternal format in regards to price drops and reprints.
Pioneer Staples:
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
came off the list.
Pauper Staples: Caw-Gate has exploded and with that, so has demand for the gates in the new Baldur's Gate set. I didn't think the gates would see much play in Pauper, but I guess when you give the format a knock off
Kessig Wolf Run
, in
Basilisk Gate
it's gonna get lit.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,228. Last week it was $27,285. Despite the gains in Standard, the reprinted cards in Double Masters are tanking and over all, we're down $57.
I am taking the week off from State of the Program next week in order to hang out with my son for the week! I'll be back in two weeks!
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
