State of the Program for June 10th, 2022
Pioneer Bans: On June 7, 2022, Pioneer added two cards to it's ban list, in Winota, Joiner of Forces
and Expressive Iteration
. You can check out the reasoning for that here.
2022 Season 1 MOCS Showcase: This airs on the Magic: The Gathering Twitch channel on June 18th, showcasing Modern and Vintage Cube.
20 Years of MTGO: If your account was created prior to June 7th, Daybreak Games has granted it 100 Play Points. Accounts will also be granted a special avatar after the celebration is over base on the age of the account after the event. Bear Cub (Which isn't even on the client in a playable form), Young Pyromancer
, Eager Cadet
, Veteran Adventurer
and Transcendent Master
all get the avatar treatment.
20th Anniversary Series: Players that go 5-0 or 4-1 in special constructed and limited play-in events get an invite to the series Finals. To enter the finals you must have a Constructed Finals and a Limited Finals token. The format for the finals is Modern Horizons 2 sealed, with a top 8 draft. If you win this event, you get a four regular Magic Online sets of Vintage-legal expansions. 2-4 get 1 set of each vintage-legal expansion. 5-8 get 100 treasure chests. It's a heck of a prize. Play-in Events rotate between Legacy, Vintage, Modern and Pioneer. Limited Play-ins feature Masters 25, Vintage Masters, Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2.
Mythic Token: To go along with the Anniversary Series, the Mythic Token is also back in the store. From June 8-25, the Mythic Event token will be available to use for the Showcase Challenges, Champions Showcase and just about any other Constructed format you could want on the client.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
I wonder what Modern would look like without the fetchlands and with Horizons sets.
That's it, that's the section this week.
Standard:
Legacy: The deck this week might be foreshadowing, it might not be, but with the amount of Izzet in the format, let's go ahead and say that it is not foreshadowing
Modern: People want to ban all the companions, but I've yet to see
Gyruda, Doom of Depth
do anything really broken in any format it was in. Get rid of the ones that make things hard (I am looking at you
Yorion, Sky Nomad
), and leave the rest alone.
Obosh, the Preypiercer
doesn't deserve this kind of disrespect.
Pauper: Mono black shows up every so often but not like it used to. Pauper sure has come a long way.
Pioneer: This is the start of the post ban Phoenix deck. Without
Expressive Iteration
the delve package gets a little tighter and
Pieces of the Puzzle
comes back to shine.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Other Event Winners
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Vivien on the Hunt
is back on the list.
Modern Staples:
Subtlety
has jumped back on to the list this week.
Eternal Staples: Lion's Eye Diamond
and Displacer Kitten
and Karn, the Great Creator
all work together to create infinite mana. This will eventually cause Karn to activate to get a big ole Walking Ballista
Pioneer Staples: Wow a lot of new cards came on to the list this week. Who knows what was being pushed out of the format because Winota and Expressive Iteration were just that much better than everything else in the format?
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Another week or so of doing Baldurs Gate repricing and tracking numbers and things at the second job will calm down. I did however manage to find time this week to qualify for a Modern Series tournament which was really surprising, considering I did it with Gyruda, Doom of Depths
. Cabal Coffers
is a gift to the Modern format. Though to be clear I didn't do it with the decklist I shared this week. That list is a lot better than the one I did it with.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
