State of the Program for June 11th, 2021

In the News

Universes Beyond:  From the article this is the new goal for the Universes Beyond Secret Lairs, they made sure to mention that The Walking Dead set isn't a part of this, but might be in the future.

  • Create and print versions of the mechanically unique Secret Lair Universes Beyond cards that are set in Magic's Multiverse approximately six months (the exact time may vary) after their release in Secret Lair.
  • The in-Magic versions will be available on The List, findable in Set Boosters for as long as players are still interested in opening them. To start, they'll appear on The List more frequently than other cards to make them easier to find. In the future, we may reprint these cards in other products—we'll have that flexibility.
  • These cards will be considered equivalent game pieces—meaning you could only play four copies (or one copy) of either the Magic version or Universes Beyond version in your deck.

You can read all of the article here

Stranger Things
:  To go along with the previous piece, and with Netflix's Geeked Week, Stranger Things will have a Secret Lair sometime this year.  No cards have been spoiled for it yet, but you can see it here.

Strixhaven Championship:  An Historic event that saw 31 of 32 copies of Brainstorm in the top eight was won by the breakout deck of the tournament which put five copies in the top eight.  Sam Pardee when undefeated in the top eight to take home $15,000.  You can read more about the event here

Historic Ban: With 20 copies in the top eight out of a possible 32, Time Warp was banned from Historic after the Strixhaven Championship.  You can read about it here.

In Store Play Returning to Europe:  The pandemic related in store suspension is being lifted in Europe next month.  Stores don't have to run events yet,but if they do, they have to follow local regulations and such.  You can see more, and information on how to get a promo Fabled Passage here

Pioneer Challenges:  After having the minimum number of players raised to fire, and then watching the format stop firing challenges, the Pioneer challenges are back to a 32 person minimum.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

This week we are looking at formats that have been helped out by Modern Horizons 2

Modern Challenge Winners
: The first Modern Challenge was won by Azorius Vial, the second by Hardened Scales Affinity.  Both decks feature some great new tools from Modern Horizons 2.  Urza's Saga and Zabaz, the Glimmerwasp both seem to be made for heavy artifact heavy decks (even if Urza's Saga is showing up in non aggro decks like Amulit).  The vial deck may have had fewer inclusions from the set, but Solitude with it's free Swords to Plowshares is huge for an Equipment or Death and Taxes style deck.  Sanctifier en-Vec was the last new card, and it's no less impressive.

Challenge One Winner

Challenge Two Winner

One top of featuring the winning decks, I also wanted to make sure to show off two more decks that WotC said they wanted to strengthen in the Modern format.  With a top 32 in the Saturday event, Enchantress shows that it got some new tools and that they helped.  On Sunday the same could be said for Reanimator.

Enchantress

Reanimator

The last decks I wanted to show off are two new archetypes.  Temur Cascade looks to take advantage of a new to Modern cascade spell in Shardless Agent to add 10 damage to the board on turn three with Crashing Footfalls, which is an impressive number.  Subtlety joins Force of Negation as free ways to protect your important stuff.  With the added cascade and free suspend stuff As Foretold seems to be super important, and cards like Living End are seeing more play as well.

The second deck is a food deck based around Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar and Feasting Troll King. The deck plays a lot like Hogaak decks from previous Modern formats, but the Troll King can only do a decent impersonation of Hogaak.  It's not as fast as the previous build, but it's still really potent according to better players than me on Twitter.

Temur Rhinos

Cookbook

Legacy:  Delver looks to be a huge winner with the addition of Modern Horizons 2.  The Legacy format also feels like it's become a rotating format thanks to the powerful cards that have been released recently.

Affinity
Pauper:  Not sure how long Chatterstorm is going to be part of the Pauper format, but if you like Storm in the all commons format, you should probably go ahead and play it.  I can't imagine this deck staying around as it is in the format for long, but then again, it's not on Arena so it might just languish in the format for 6 months.

The Boros Midrange deck is super interesting to me, because I love land destruction.  The copies of Geomancer's Gambit and Cleansing Wildfire are neat, you can use them as ramp spells for yourself whenever you have your artifact lands in play, you can break up Tron with them you can disrupt the Invasion sac lands or the Mercadian Masques lands against storm with no downside and you get to draw a card.

I have played this deck a lot recently, and it is great deal of fun.

ChatterStorm
Boros Midrange
Vintage: Eight Rootwallas in a vintage deck?  Eight Rootwallas in a Vintage deck!

Hollow Vine

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Modern Staples:Noble Hierarch is back on the list.  Utopia Sprawl has enchanted the list as well.  I'm not sure if this is because of Pauper, or more likely Modern getting the new Enchantress toys. Inkmoth Nexus flew on the list as well.

In addition to these cards, the Modern Horizons 2 cards were added to the list as well.

There are so many cards on the Modern list now.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,307.  Last week the big number was $28,718.  The number slumped a bit this week, with a lot of Modern Horizons 2 cards coming off of their highest prices.

In Closing

Prices were done this week on Wednesday.  I spent a lot of time playing Persona 4 Golden this week, putting in roughly 20 hours this week.  I wish I could take the dungeons in Persona 5 and combine it with the murder mystery of Persona 4 and the music of Persona 3.

That wouldn't take Final Fantasy XV off the top spot of games for me, but it would come really close.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
