State of the Program for June 12th, 2020

In the News

Winota Suspended: A week after the Banned and Restricted list shook up Historic with the suspension of Fires of Invention and Agent of Treachery, WotC came back and added Winota, Joiner of Forces to the list. This change largely came as a surprise, and nothing was done for players who used Wild Cards with the understanding that things wouldn't change so soon again.  They cited a rise in popularity and problematically high win percentage for the suspension, but one has to assume those things were known already, as the Historic version of the deck leans on Angrath's Marauders instead of Agent.  You can read the reasonings here from WotC.

Commander Dies:  The new rule says this:  If a commander has an ability which triggers on it dying or going to exile, it will trigger before heading to the command zone. This rule will come to MTGO with the Core Set 2021 update.  Check out the Commander RC article here.

StarCity Online:  Partnering with mtgmelee.com, StarCity Games is running their own Open Series events on Arena.  The formats used for the first round of events are Historic and Standard.  The Championship events are Standard. You can see the full schedule of events here

FNM at Home: This week is Historic.

Core Set 2021 Previews Start: Spoiler season has been in full swing for a little less than a week now.  You can check the schedule here.  The Card Image Gallery is here.  The Variant Image Gallery is here.  The set looks like a lot of fun and some great reprints are coming soon.  I'm really excited about Transmogrify. A red Polymorph to me is extremely my jam.

Magic Online Premier Play:  Noticed a lack of news in this weeks weekly article from the MTGO team.  Super Qualifiers have ended, Prelims appear to be on the schedule.  Weekend Challenges are still on the menu, but as the team explores new options of premier play, things are lacking.  See the tweet here

Depictions of Racism in Magic:  WotC dropped a piece of news late in the week that managed to do both good and bad.  Performative in nature, after ending with egg on their face for other performative actions (see Harmon's letter in Around the Web for this) this news upset the right and wrong people.  After a week of people of color sharing their experiences with the online Magic community, asking for more diversity in the game and content creation, WotC took action.

They changed the id number for Invoke Prejudice.  The number for that in Gatherer used to be 1488.  I'm not sure it was on purpose, but it was an issue that had been known for years, and nothing was done.  They removed the art from the database for seven cards. They then banned those seven cards from tournament play. MTGO only has two of them, and there was no news about what the online client may do with the cards.  Cleanse and Crusade are the two online, the other five did not make it online.

It has been a week of reckoning for the people at Wizards of the Coast, and while this first step was a small one, more work needs to be done within the company.  27 years of culture building can't be fixed in a day, but one has to take a step to start the journey.

For the list of cards banned please check the article.  You can also see the tweet that says this will be an ongoing process while cards are being reviewed.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech
Standard: Super excited to this out with a card that has been spoiled in Core Set 2021.  This version of Lukka Fires had moved away from Fires of Invention before the ban, and while it stuck with Agent of Treachery, having Dream Trawler in its spot may not be the worst thing.  I can't wait to slot in some copies of Transmogrify, it feels like a perfect addition to the deck.

Historic:  Eh, with the StarCity Online Series doing Historic, might as well cover it as well right?

Legacy:  It's getting harder and harder to find sweet decks in the oldest non-rotating formats.  Arcum's Astrolabe appears to be doing real damage to the format.  It's really made mana easier, and made Wasteland worse.  That however is probably putting the problem glibly.

Modern: I'm old and set in my ways, so I have a really hard time calling any deck with just three land destruction spells Ponza, but I guess the three copies of Pillage in the main is good enough for everyone else.

Pauper:  Pauper is another format that is in need of some shakeups.  Newer commons are not nearly as powerful as older commons, and it seems to be taking rarity shifts to help the format shake off the stagnation.

Pioneer: Is Mono Black Aggro back in Pioneer? Maybe! Check the price lists below and that might show an answer.

Vintage: I honestly think I am going to drop Vintage outside of the really sweet decks that rarely come to the format.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Lawrence Harmon's open letter to WotC
ColorofMTG asks you to listen
Zaiem Beg writes about the WotC he knows.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Treasure chests, despite the inclusion of Commander 2020 cards seem to be going back down as more and more are opened to get the cards in to the system.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

I had to do this list twice, because like a dumb dumb, I somehow managed to keep foil cards in, so when Open Office showed off a Good Stuff list with 126 cards, I shrugged and thought, might as well run with it. Then I took back my shrug and decided to do it correctly.  Cutting out the foils cut off more than half the list, but a 59 card table is a lot easier to look at!

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still.

Played some LCQs for the PT, finished in the top 16 of one, took a couple days off to play some Persona 5 Royal and work on State of the Program, and still have to come up with time to do Fortnite stuff for my sons battle pass.  At least he got the Deadpool skin.  He's been gone since Sunday, and yeah I'll get him back next weekend, but gosh, I miss him so much.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
