State of the Program for June 16th, 2022
Secret Lair: The June Superdrop came out on Monday, featured in this one are artists Volkan Baga, Chris Rahn, Livia Prima, and Kelogsloops. There are also drops based on Tokyo and royalty. You can check out the information for these drops, and the Pride drop, here.
Baldurs Gate: Treasure Chests updated on Wednesday, and with the update we got a Baldur's Gate cards. While it is not the entire set, it looks like 120 or so cards were added. You can see the whole list here.
Magic 30: October 28-30th in Las Vegas, Wizards of the Coast is going to kick off the 30th Anniversary of Magic: The Gathering. This event will have virtual tickets, exclusives and the World Championship. You can check out that info here.
All of these items are from last week
2022 Season 1 MOCS Showcase: This airs on the Magic: The Gathering Twitch channel on June 18th, showcasing Modern and Vintage Cube.
20 Years of MTGO: If your account was created prior to June 7th, Daybreak Games has granted it 100 Play Points. Accounts will also be granted a special avatar after the celebration is over base on the age of the account after the event. Bear Cub (Which isn't even on the client in a playable form), Young Pyromancer
, Eager Cadet
, Veteran Adventurer
and Transcendent Master
all get the avatar treatment.
20th Anniversary Series: Players that go 5-0 or 4-1 in special constructed and limited play-in events get an invite to the series Finals. To enter the finals you must have a Constructed Finals and a Limited Finals token. The format for the finals is Modern Horizons 2 sealed, with a top 8 draft. If you win this event, you get a four regular Magic Online sets of Vintage-legal expansions. 2-4 get 1 set of each vintage-legal expansion. 5-8 get 100 treasure chests. It's a heck of a prize. Play-in Events rotate between Legacy, Vintage, Modern and Pioneer. Limited Play-ins feature Masters 25, Vintage Masters, Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2.
Mythic Token: To go along with the Anniversary Series, the Mythic Token is also back in the store. From June 8-25, the Mythic Event token will be available to use for the Showcase Challenges, Champions Showcase and just about any other Constructed format you could want on the client.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is
here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:
Ongoing - Vintage Cube
Upcoming Events on MTGO

June 26 - Legacy Showcase Challenge
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Whatever I want to talk about here
Standard: I like how a Super Friends list exists in a color space that it typically hasn't existed in. This is typically a Bant or Esper deck, but they have printed some really good walkers in Black and Red. I have still never seen
Zariel, Archduke of Avernus
though, and that's pretty cool!
Legacy: It's storm but this time with
Aeve, Progenitor Ooze
!
Modern: I have played a lot of Modern this week because I really enjoy the Enchantress and
Cabal Coffers
decks, but I think Modern really needs some help. On their own, cards like
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer
and
Omnath, Locus of Creation
aren't bad. Heck even
Teferi, Time Raveler
serves a purpose against the cascade decks. The problem is these decks are formulaic and result in games feeling the same.
Pauper: It's been a long time since I've seen a Zombie deck in Pauper!
Pioneer: The recent bans seem to have made the Green Ramp decks the top deck of the format again.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Modern Staples: You may notice that
Prismatic Ending
is off the list this week despite being on it last week. That's because I listed the Retro Frame version instead of the correct version.
Eternal Staples:
Academy Rector
fell off the list this week.
Pioneer Staples:
Castle Locthwain
came off the list.
Faceless Haven
fell off as well. Finally,
Rest in Peace
came off the list.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
The big number this week is $27,787.
In the waning stages of a heat wave that have left the heat index at over 100 degrees in Kentucky. It doesn't get quite that hot in my house, but I've had to resort to cold water compresses and such as the day drags on. Thankfully there is a small break this weekend, right before we go in to it again.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
