State of the Program for June 19th, 2020

In the News

Core Set 2021 fully revealed:  The full set has been revealed but spoiler season isn't quite over yet!  You can check out the full gallery here, and all the variants here.  If you are in to tokens, you can see those here

Jumpstart spoilers:  This set is a new way to play Magic, in that you open two of the 20 card theme boosters, shuffle them up and are ready to play!   It has almost 500 reprints and 37 new cards that will be legal in Vintage, Commander and Legacy. It will add these cards to Arena on July 16th and will be out for paper play on July 27th.  I imagine that any cards that are relevant to MTGO will be added via treasure chests, but that is speculation on my part.  Some cards in Jumpstart will not be marking their way on to Arena.  You can see that list here.  I can't seem to find the gallery of Jumpstart cards, so here is what mtggoldfish.com compiled.

Legacy Challenge Update:  The required number of players needed to run these events has moved from 64 to 32.

Origins and Eternal Weekend Cancelled:  Origins, important to Magic as the place where it made it's debut in Dallas was cancelled this week by GAMA.  Eternal Weekend was also cancelled but may be moving to an online format

More Product Delays:  Secret Lair Ultimate Edition can be expected in stores within a month from the June 12 release date.  Core Set bundles will be shipped in lower quantities.  Planeswalker decks and Arena Starter kits will be unavailable at launch.  Jumpstart may also have smaller quantities.  Read more here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

While I was playing some Pioneer today, I realized how many decks I have not only on MTGO, but also Arena and Paper that revolve around All That Glitters.   While it's not legal in Pauper, it does have a closely related card in Ethereal Armor so I decided this week would be a theme week, especially since Standard is so close to rotating, Core Set 2021 and Jumpstart are about to legal online, and well, just wanted to have some fun with things!

Standard
: I prefer the Selesnya version of Auras that is going around, to me it has better mana, at the trade off of a less powerful sideboard.  However, this version has been doing much better recently, so that is why I decided to feature it.

Historic:  The Historic decklist feature may be short lived as there is finally a regularly scheduled series of events for the format, and no one is playing in them.  That is unfortunate because the format is a lot of fun.

Legacy:  Okay, so I couldn't find an All That Glitters deck for Legacy, but it wasn't for lack of trying, so I had find a different pair of pants for this format. Rancor seemed to fit pretty well.

Modern: There is a Azorius version of Bogles floating around now, as well as a Bant version. This one is just classic Bogles.

Pauper:  Also just classic Bogles for the format.  It's changed a lot since Arcum's Astrolabe left the format.

Pioneer: This is the most popular All That Glitters deck in Pioneer.  It's a lot of fun really.  I was hoping for new to Pioneer duel lands in Core Set 2021, so we could make the mana a bit better in decks, but that is a dream for another day.

Vintage: Yeah I didn't even try to find an auras deck for Vintage.  This one has both Standstill and Shark Typhoon though, so that's almost the same?  It's not actually even close to being the same.

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

I have finally realized that I do not know enough about Vintage decks to try to give them a name.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples:  A couple of new ones this week. I'm sure Winota is more for Pioneer and Modern purposes than it is Standard.  The rare Chandra is here again as well.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

In Closing

I can't begin to explain how much Fortnite, Arena and Persona 5 I have been playing.  It is not a responsible amount of time on these games.  I did get qualified for this weekend's StarCity event, and I did get a lot of Battle Pass stuff done for my son, but I am really looking forward to The Last of Us 2 and the Pokemon expansion stuff and there are a lot of games I need to play still.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
