State of the Program for June 25th, 2021

In the News

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms:  The mechanics article went up yesterday.  Dungeons is a new mechanic.  There are three of them, they are in the Command Zone, you can only be in one at a time, they do not take up sideboard slots, and you will always have access to all three of them.  Venture into the dungeon is the new keyword action that lets you move along the dungeon.  Room triggers happen when you go into the room.  You can't go backwards in dungeons.  For the mechanic article, that seems to be the most important one in the set.  You can check out the full thing here

Preview Season:  It's time to start it up again.  Adventures in the Forgotten Realms previews kick off June 29th.  They last until July 5th.  You can find the daily schedule here

Modern Cube:  Emma Handy is in charge of the MTGO cubes now, she has a feature article about the changes that went in to the Modern Cube that is on MTGO now.  You can read it here.

Magic Online Champions Showcase:  The end of the first season of the 2021 MOCS starts June 26th.  It is an 8 player event that features both a Modern Horizons 2 limited portion and Modern portion as well.  You can see who is playing here, and watch the broadcast on the twitch channel!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I cannot wait until Adventures in the Forgotten Realms comes out.  I also can't wait for Throne of Eldraine to rotate out.  No one is gonna miss that set in Standard right?  At least this deck is all about Adventures right?

Historic:  I haven't logged on to Arena in weeks, so I forgot the 6 win deck dump existed.  I'm not sure there is anything that could get me to log in, but if there is, it is this.  This is very much on brand for me.  I hope it is good.  It's 63 cards and doesn't have a sideboard though, so I do not have the highest of hopes.  There might be something here, there might not be.  Check out the other 6 win decks here

Legacy:  Stone is a fun deck to show off from time to time.  I'm honestly surprised by the lack of Urza's Saga in the deck.  It feels like the land would fit in naturally, but I guess another Wasteland target is not where the deck wants to be.

Modern:   Living End has been a big winner in the new format.  I dislike that Force of Negation is nearly 400 tickets on MTGO, so this build is not one I will ever play.  However, Grief is an option that sees play as well, to protect the cascade spells that get you to the sorcery.  This build is to blue heavy to run them both, but it's a fine build regardless.

Pauper:  With Affinity being one of the winning decks post Modern Horizons 2, it figured it would be a matter of time before Disciple of the Vault and Glaze Fiend started to see more play.

Pioneer:  If Pioneer is going to survive WotC needs to do something with tit.  Pioneer Masters the set that was going to bring the format to Arena has fallen off MTGA schedules and right now the format is kind of floundering.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

In Closing

This week was weird.  I spent a lot of time sorting cards and putting them away or listing them for sale.  Not nearly enough time playing video games or Magic.  Prices were done on Thursday night and then again on Friday morning.  I am exhausted right now.  I do not remember the last time I had a day off from my other job, and because I go directly from managing Pure to doing customer support for Legit, I missed the Thursday update for Pure.  I need to take a break and take care of me a bit.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
