State of the Program for June 28th, 2023
MTGO Socials: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here. In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here. MTGO has a Twitter account, and can now add an account for Facebook and Instagram.
Two-Factor Authentication: This is in Account Settings. To turn it on you will be asked for your account password and a 6-digit code sent to the email associated with your account. You can use either an email or authenticator based system. This will help keep your accounts secure, you can read about the system here.
Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone. Currently being redeemed is The Brothers' War (About Half-Gone) Phyrexia: All Will Be One, and March of the Machine. As of May 23, 2023, Redemption Tokens are non-refundable!
Challenge Schedule Changing: Two Prelims on Friday nights are now becoming small Challenge events. This helps players in the Asia-Pacific region. Saturday is also getting another Modern Challenge. Both of these are 32 player events. The Saturday 6 a.m. Standard Event is going back to a small event prize structure.
Pauper League Update: * From Last Week * Pauper is leaving the MOCS rotation and will be replaced by Standard. Prices for Pauper leagues will be reduced to 6 tickets or 60 play points and prizes will be changes to ratios in line with the current prize table. This change will happen in 2 weeks. *New This Week* The idea is being dropped and the Pauper league will remain at the same price and prize table.
Patch Notes: You can check out the notes for this update here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
This week we are looking at the Modern impact that The Lords of the Rings has made on the format. Next week I'll look at Legacy, Vintage and Pauper.
The One Ring
: We haven't found the best deck for the
The One Ring
yet. I know a lot of decks in Modern as jamming in 1-4 copies of the card into their decks, and it seems almost unlikely that having one, two or three copies is correct. It feels like a four of, but it also feels like no one is playing it as such. With that said, there is a reason this card is so expensive, it's the real deal and I don't see how it survives in Modern past the Wilds of Eldraine ban update. Nearly every deck loves it, from big mana decks that support the Urza Tron or
Cabal Coffers
to control decks. I've seen some copies of Rakdos Scam and Izzet Breach with the card. It is everywhere.
Delighted Halfling
: Giving the Elemental deck a Cavern of Souls
on a stick in the form of Delighted Halfling
was a choice! It plays along very well with Omnath and Nissa, two incredibly important keys to the deck, and because it's not just creatures, like Cavern of Souls is, the Halfling can make sure your copies of Teferi, Wrenn and Six, Jace, and The One Ring can't be countered as well.
Samwise Gamgee
: So this set did introduce a new combo into the format. With Samwise Gamgee
, Cauldron Familiar
and Witch's Oven
you have a self contained loop that fits perfectly into an existing deck in the format.
Land Cycling Cards: The Land Cycling creatures seem to have caught on in Living End
decks. This shouldn't be a surpise! They fix your mana and put a giant threat in the yard. The only thing from here is figuring out which build is proper, is it the newer ones with free countermagic to go along with the hand disruption that Grief
offers, or a more traditional Jund build? Right now the 4 could build seems to be winning!
Orcish Bowmasters
: Yes this could have just as easily been a Delighted Halfling
deck but I went this build of Yawgmoth Counters because this, out of all of the Modern decks seems like the best fit for Orcish Bowmasters
and I honestly think that the card is going to see more play in Legacy and Vintage.
Reprieve
: The white Remand
features in this deck, and it's gonna be really hard for your opponent to cast their spells to get them back in to the game after they have no lands to do so!
Flowering of the White Tree
: Look, yeah I know, this is just Boros Convoke from Pioneer with Fetchlands, slightly better creatures, and a copy of Flowering of the White Tree
, and that's okay! If you're a Pioneer player and play this, you have a easy entry into Modern as well!
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.
